I went to see the Eagles back in 2010 in Toronto. My biggest regret was to record the concert. I did not enjoy the moment instead of see them live I saw the concert on my camera and kept myself so distracted. At the end I thought that I would have another opportunity to see the Eagles live but didn't happen. Don Henley is absolutely right.

I AGREE with Don Henley!!!!!!! I was a child when I listened to my first Eagles album. We had one rotary phone in our household. I'm still old school. I have a cell phone but don't text and all that crap when I'm being entertained. I think it's rude. I am also an entertainer. So.... I find it disruptive and disrespectful.

I agree 💯% with you Don. Let's be in the moment and enjoy the music and the musicians. It's not only distracting, but rude. It makes me sick. Put down the damn phones. Why has life become a social media moment? Life is more than a social media post. Live life in the moment, listen to the music.

  • @amj2020
    @amj20208 жыл бұрын

No one ever lives in the moment anymore, and generally there seems to be less zest for life, and more need for adulation and popularity from others on social media to give their life more meaning. Wonderfully articulated by Don, but it happens all the time. Working in NYC, 75% of all pedestrians or more walk looking down at their phone, oblivious to the world around them. Couples sit at dinner, both on their cell phones texting, surfing the web, yet sitting in complete silence with no eye contact. People let technology detach them from the 'moment', and removing them from the moment completely.

Kevin Hart's last tour had security guards roaming the aisles kicking people out for using their phones. Every seat in the house had a sticker that you could adhere (no residue) to your phone screen to remind you of the zero-tolerance policy. They kicked 15 people out and then all the other 10,000 people got the message. I never was one to take photos at events, but being a performer, I can say that seeing an audience member texting or not being in the moment is a bit of a buzzkill. It causes a disconnect and you never want that at a live show, whether it is theater, music, dance, or any other visual art form.

Don is right, cell phones have just become a complete pain in the ass for everyone.....especially when you're driving around these cell phone addicts, but it's not going to stop, with technology advancing more and more everyday, it's going to get worse. I can see Don's point wanting people to tune into their music and the show instead of tuning in to their cell phones, but he's gotta take into consideration the average mentality of people, they're gonna feel "Hey, I paid $150(or whatever) for a ticket to see you, if I wanna text etc, I'm gonna damn well do it!!!". But I agree with Don, it's not fair to the others there who paid just as much if not more for a ticket and they're stuck looking at some asshole's cell phone all night, and being distracted by camera flashes, ringtones etc. That would piss me off too....people can live a couple of hours without their goddamn cell phone, they do every time they sleep, it won't kill them to leave it in their pocket of their car for a little bit.

YEP!!!! When I hear the word app, I think of potato skins and cheese sticks, but I do think it is important for the artist to articulate them selves when they ask their audience to tone the phone down, after all some people are spending their hard, earned money and don't even know they are doing anything wrong or disrespectful. Sad but true. Personally don't even care about a cell phone when I am at a concert, I do want to be in the moment and I plan on dancing and singing to every song, I am serious, "every song" Don Henley is "Right On"!!!! Thank you Charlie Rose for posting.

Mr. Henley, I grew up listening to your music. We had all the Eagles albums at my house. As a fan I'd like to say that going around blocking all the videos you can with your music is just shooting yourself in the foot. Especially the ones that play brief clips for educational purposes. I've discovered several artists on KZread and went out and bought their CDs because I wanted higher quality sound that you can't get from KZread. Hiring a roomful of people who sit at a computer and block videos all day is just asinine.

While I DO agree getting my view blocked by the phone of the guy in front of me is boring; it’s their choice how they wanna spend the time their time at a concert. It’s the musicians job to perform and entertain. Nothing else. We pay THEM. They don’t pay us. Myself, I’ve NEVER filmed a single second on any show. I take a few pictures to remember, but never hold the phone over my head to block others. I see people filming for 10 minutes (!) in ONE GO. I’m like, what’s the point?! The sound will suck, and most likely the video quality will suck too... just ENJOY the show...!

Let me get this straight, now Don Henley is trying to control his fans too? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Don Henley as a musician, as a person, not so much... People that come to a show are the ones paying (a lot) for a ticket; it's their problem if they're missing out on something THEY paid for. Stop trying to control everyone, Don! David Geffen's comment about Don being malcontent or Glenn's comment, no one can suck the fun out of a room faster than Don Henley; no truer words have ever been spoken.

Nothing beats being 100% present for an awesome live performance and sharing that experience with thousands of other fans who are also fully present. Live music heals you, uplifts you and I would argue reinvigorates you down to the sub cellular level.

Agreed. Too many people behaving like zombies starring at and fidgeting with their electronic gadgets instead of being immersed in the moment and perhaps even engaged in conversation with those around them perhaps even on important topics. Henley, is right on the mark though. If you're at a concert, be at the concert and enjoy the concert. I'm even in favor of going incognito, as it relates to the cell phone, tv and the internet at least one day a week to remind myself that, yes, there is life worth living without all the mumbo jumbo of modern society. Perhaps that's a different version of #Unplugged.

I agree totally! When I saw the Eagles at MGM in Las Vegas (February 2014), they had specific rules about the audience remaining seated throughout the entire show. And they did stop the show to remind the audience to remain seated. I sincerely appreciated them doing this because I have a torn disc in my back. I can only stand for a few minutes before I am in excruciating pain. When people stand in the rows ahead of you, it is impossible for someone that has to remain seated to enjoy seeing the show!

Yes, because before smartphones Eagles fans would never dream of bringing portable tape recorders, shoot amateur film, tape on a camcorder or take a point and click camera to capture the moment. In fact, so well behaved that no one ever chain-smoked cigarettes, got high AF on drugs, got drunk, got into fights, harassed security and staff, talked too loud, raised their spouse on their shoulders, danced too egregiously or heckled a band member. Don Henley must be referring to that golden age in history when all rock concert attendees sat cross-legged, like calm Hindu cows, in total awe and not a single transgression would happen in 1 hour and 45 minutes.

When I paid $700 for two concert tickets, I just might want to memorialize that moment I'm in with the Eagles by taking a photograph or two. Henley isn't upset with someone's view being blocked, he's concerned about someone using that photo or recording to make a profit off of it, which in and of itself is ridiculous. Henley spouts off continuously about how much money he's being screwed out of by any number of people, but he doesn't seem to mind sticking it to his fans with insanely expensive ticket prices. I'll pay the price to see your concert, but when I do it gives me license to enjoy that concert in the manner I see fit.

Exactly. The first songs are now turning 50, and although I enjoyed them, he and his views have totally turned me off. There are plenty of rightful complaints, blocking other’s views, et cetera, I agree. But at the “heart of the matter”, it’s nothing but the money. Mr Henley needs to indeed “get over it”. The prices asked for seeing the excuse for the band today is laughable. If one wants to spend the outrageous entrance fee to see the shadow, I can’t fathom. He can be the king of the Eagles, but I am no longer a loyal subject. Loved them since 1975, and with Henley espousing his “do as I say and not as I do” for the last few decades, I tossed ever CD I collected. It is all about the money, with his disguise of concern of being on the moment as his ruse. He’s not going to catch up with Paul McCartney’s money, and it’s a shame the hundreds of millions he has personally just can’t make him happy. So long Don, and the puppet show formerly known as the band.

Exactly. I couldn't have said it any better. It is now early March 2021. I know this post is about six years young , yet this is or should be considered timeless.. Almost everyone has a cell phone today, as do I . Out of disrespect these days however , many if not most people can't keep it out their hands for more than one second. It's really a sad story. Getting back to the original point , when your at - in this case a concert , do yourself and everyone around a big favor. Put the phone away in your pocket or purse . It is a serious distraction for the band trying to perform , and those around you trying to enjoy the moment..

I think it would be awesome for artists to flip the problem into an opportunity for publicity. I agree, no cell phones during the concert, but why not setup a time after the concert for a photo-op? Couldn't hurt and it could be limited to 1 hour or less of time spent.

The negative impact of phone cameras is a huge topic, but to the specifics of Henley’s stance, I think it depends entirely on what the artist wants. If they don’t want cell phones, you don’t use them. I’ve been to events where you either don’t carry a phone in, or you surrender them at the door. So be it. You know this in advance and it’s part of your decision to attend or not. From the perspective of the audience, I believe that grabbing a couple of photos (not selfies) doesn’t stop you enjoying the moment. Likewise a couple of short videos. However, if you video longer periods (eg entire songs or multiple songs) you do miss the moment. All that said, if the artist doesn’t mind, and you aren’t impeding others around you, then it’s your choice. I live in Australia, and don’t go to as many gigs as I did when I was younger. My hearing loss from those days is testimony to weekly rituals during the 1980s. However, in recent times, I have recorded parts of a song at some gigs, posted it on social media, then had the artists re-post it on theirs. In that instance they appreciate people thanking them for the concert experience. I’ve seen the same happen with others. In those instances, I’m sure it relates to the scale of the artist. It’s more the touring Aussie artists that will repost (from sell out gigs mind you) rather than large scale international tours. But again, it shows that some performers will embrace the technology. As an audience member you simply respect their wishes.
