Here's something of a trivia thing that I doubt anybody saw. Remember when Garlits dragster blew up (clutch I think is what did it) in 1970 at Lions Dragstrip in California? You might remember the iconic photo of the car cut in half by this explosion, and the half of the car Garlits was strapped into was in a 90 degree angle to the rest of the frame rails? It cut Garlit's foot in half....and he had a horribly tough time coming back from that physically. But being BIG DADDY.....of course he did. Well...at around 1:25....look at his right foot. You'll see the front half of his shoe looks like there isn't anything in there....it's curling upwards. I only noticed that because I had all the toes on my right foot amputated this year, and my shoes all do that now too. lol. Warms my heart to see Garlits still so active....and in GREAT SHAPE!

Bill, Think you're right, Swamp Rat 12-A: was built in Seffner by Bob Taaffe, Jim Marrone and Don in the fall of 1967, right after Schiefer Clutches had purchased Swamp Rat 11. Bob wanted to build a long wheelbase car, but Don had the final say and we built an experimental 137″ car. It was a total failure and as soon as Don returned from the Winter Tour in CA, the three of them built Swamp Rat 12-B, 215″ wheelbase and this was a winner. SR 12-A was sold to some bracket racers and they had it till 1976 when it crashed, Don took it in on trade for a new chassis. In 1987, Don had Mark Buchanan repair the car while he was in Ocala building SR 31. Then SR 12-A sat in “Don’s Garage” for 20 years till one day in 2007, Mopar called to see if Don would like to build a 6.4, late model Hemi blown fuel engine. Don did and installed it into Swamp Rat 12-A. Thanks for watching, keep working on stuff!!

nitromethane can actually burn in the absence of air, yielding nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and water vapor. There’s still energy to be obtained from the CO and H2, though; with sufficient oxygen, it will go all the way to CO2, nitrogen, and water. This is the case in drag racing and model airplanes; nitromethane contains about 25% of the energy of gasoline but takes only about an eighth the oxygen to burn completely. This means that engines can run much “richer” (i.e., with less air in the cylinder); hence the use in dragsters.
