Been followin' Big Daddy since 1968, been followin' Antron since he was early on two wheels. I'm really enjoying these two getting together. Man, if I had a top fuel car, I'd name it The Spirit Of St. Garlits. Thanks, Don - for all you've been and all you are. Thanks, Antron, - for all you've been and all you'll be.

Hard to believe I used to see him at my favorite Mexican restaurant after a night of racing. It was in San Antonio around the late 70's or early 80's after the Nat's at Alamo Dragway. I would always hit Don Pedro's restaurant around midnight. Don and his crew would show up about the same time, and because the place was smaller back then we usually sat just a few feet from each other. Don wore a dirty cap and T-shirt and his arms were usually streaked with grease and oil. He must have liked the place because he was there every year. I never bothered him though. He was a hard working and hungry racer trying to get the nitro taste out of his mouth like the rest of us. Of course I also watched him in the pits during the race. He worked fast and was always smiling. I have great respect for the man he is and for what he has done for the sport.

Mike Dunn was the best commentator. They have idiots now. Big Daddy a legend. Built a rear engine dragster. They laughed. Less than 2 years later, not a front engine car left.

Yep. They were great but someone apparently felt the need to screw it up. I don't like Pedregon and that other guy.

Top fuel nitro has kept Drag racing popular if Nitro ever goes away from drag racing it will die. It's what everyone comes to see not something you can really understand by watching a video. Being there it hits all your senses the smell, sound, feel, sight. Just so different then any other type of combustion engine motorsport.

I thought the crew chief was a bit disrespectful to Big Daddy, pushing his hand off the fuel lever. He was treated like a kid, they wouldn't let him do anything :(

The crew member is actually NHRA Funny Car World Champion Mark Oswald, who I believe was also the co-crew chief at the time of this footage. Hell of a nice guy. The crew chiefs are usually very picky about start up procedures before a run. I’m sure Gar understood why he jammed the fuel on. If I recall it was a last minute idea to have Big Daddy warm the car up.

I understand that the crew chief must have control I just thought it made Don look like an ammature

I though the same thing. I know the warm ups are different but they could have given him the procedure. This was nothing more than a PR stunt for the team and disrespectful to Garlits .
