"Now let us all praise Franco Corelli! The opera is hardly a tenor vehicle, but on this afternoon Corelli fills the role with such abundant, glorious tone that he deserves our salutations. Nor is his musical honesty and dramatic commitment of inferior quality. Of course, he will spend tone where the composer asks for containment -- that blemish we must simply accept (and willingly, in the face of his other assets)....From the first, he is in splendid, free voice....he vaults to high notes with uncommon assurance. The tenor appears to be fully aware of his exalted vocal state on this afternoon, for he sings with confident abandon in the most difficult passages. At the end of the court duet with Elisabetta he tops the concluding phrase with a brilliant, and tonally luxuriant, high B-flat (the note increasing in amplitude and vibrancy -- an effect remarkable even for him)."

This is why we love opera. I recall well hearing this broadcast in 1970. Corelli has always. moved me. A gift to us all.
Franco, whose voice you can listen to forever. The beauty, the genius, the total passion and devotion to the music... There is only one Franco Corelli. The outstanding exponent of great singing.
I saw Corelli in Don Carlo at both the "Old" and "New" Met". His electrifying voice and exciting stage presence made them performances I'll never forget!

My favorite Verdi Opera sung by the perfect tenor for this opera. No one better than Corelli.
Was there ever in the history of Opera, a voice more Passionate, , than that of Franco Corelli as in this Don Carlo!
And as his voice works so perfectly, he is able to ACT Carlo in a way I have never heard.

Magnificent Corelli .
Franco Corelli had a seemingly inexhaustible supply of energy here. I don't recall being struck by that in any tenor before. You get the feeling that nothing was vocally difficult for him on this occasion.

Formidabile Corelli , ma non per la voce , ma nonostante la voce : perché riesce a trovare gli accenti giusti per rappresentare la figura del fragile Carlo in maniera plausibile. Brava ed immagino bellissima, la Kabaivanska.

Don Carlo was one of Corelli's best roles. I saw him do it at the Met with Raina Kabaivanska, Montserrat Caballe and Gabriella Tucci.

As a result of the many replies to my original statement, I explored my own responses to the "Corelli Phenomenon". He was just that - a phenomenon among singers in general and among tenors in particular. Most singers make use of the Mask as they go up the range. Corelli did not. His voice was directed throughout the range without "cover". The result was a stream of sound that came from the chest. In over sixty years of listening to singers, I do not recall any singer, other than Corelli, who produced the voice in this manner. Certainly not at the high level of quality singing that Corelli achieved in his illustrious career.

Rafael Banús Irusta cosa vuoi sapere della Kabaivanska ?! la tua ''grande'' Raina dal vivo con la sua vocalità stridula faceva paura soltanto ai bambini !... ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah ! accanto alla vocalità divina di Corelli la Kabaivanska con la sua vocetta poco bella faceva pallida figura . dal vivo era così . il vecchio

Indeed. Corelli was in marvelous voice in this performance. While I fully recognize and acknowledge Corelli's tremendous appeal to operagoers, I have some reservations related to the voice itself. However, I roundly applaud his singing on this occasion.

@@absdyna There were many. Recorded history has left us wonderful examples. Just go out there and listen. There are criteria that go beyond taste. There is no reason to debate the matter of taste. Just listen and enjoy.

@@hashatz I was just trying to find out who you preferred in the role... I was then going to listen to both and compare and see what the differences were for myself. If you think I'm attacking your taste... Well that's not the case, sorry if it came across that way, not what I was going for
when i try to sing like Franco i get tired in 30 minutes or less :( Franco, help me!!! :D :D HOw da fuck you could sing like that!!!! :D :D
