We will never hear voices as great as Corelli and Tebaldi ever again. This can only be described as the best of the best, a historic performance. Outstanding. WOW!

Corelli with Tebaldi in Andrea Chenier and Corelli with Nilsson in Turandot, pure perfection.

Best I ever heard Corelli smack in his prime. Both vocally and interpretively.. What a good looking man he was.. Hard to believe he Suffered from stage fright....... Tebaldi in wonderful sound Where she usually was.

Il superbo Franco Corelli and la divina Renata Tebaldi give it their all and deliver a "Vicino a te" that will never be forgotten. How I adore these two beloved artists...... R.I.P. +++ Franco e Renata.......... January 21, 2023. I had to listen to the duet several times. Once was certainly not enough.

I so understand you on this, I was MESMERISED when I first heard this clip some 25 years ago and I am equally mesmerised and in love with this performance, both performers, their voices and Giordano's ANDREA CHENIER to this day. Absolutely fantastic! 😍❤️

If I recall correctly, Tebaldi was known as la regina, not la divina. La divina was Callas, I believe. (Sutherland was la stupenda and Sills was la stella, I think (not to be confused with Antonietta Stella!).) I don't know where all those titles came from however. Anyone know?

@@PinaOliva-dp1ig Ho avuto la fortuna di ascoltarlo nel 1976 a Torre del Lago dal vivo nella Boheme con la Kabaivanska, Era la sua penultima apparizione in un opera. Ebbe un mancamento di una frazione di secondo su una nota nell'aria "...ci lascerem alla stagion dei fiori..." ma nonostante questo l'impatto della sua voce fu avvolgente per tutta la durata dell'opera.

I saw them in Chenier, my favorite opera and got both their autographs. And Corelli my favorite tenor since I saw him in the old film of Tosca at 16. So awesome those voices together. And Tebaldi didn't record well. Her middle voice was like a huge fleecy blanket over everything below our upper seats. Luckily I saw him 3 more times and that "Vittoria" that melted me so I couldn't move.

Yep, saw them too. Saturday broadcast, 66. Corelli was the story that day (Colzani was good too). I remember, about 30 minutes after it was over, as we were driving back home to Long Island, when I and my brother were waxing poetic over Corelli's performance that day, my mother said, a bit plaintively, "You know, Tebaldi was good too!"

@@chriggsiii Corelli was a year older than Tebaldi, but emerged as a major singer much later. She was a great star in her 20’s. In this clip he is still in his glorious prime, while she is singing with an instrument seriously diminished by a vocal crisis in 1963. From her return to the stage in ‘64 to the end of her career her top notes were very problematic, as you can see from the look on her face. If you had heard her ten years earlier, I promise, you’d remember her!

The 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's were truly the greatest times America ever knew, even with the wars, when all such fantastic talent, class and dignity existed and could be found on any nuber of television shows or NYC venues. Now we seem like a hollowed out Banana Republic and I thank God I got to experience life in Brooklyn in the 70's, the absolute last great decade we'll ever know😢

What outstanding artists! Such a pity that nothing similar exists today.

It is just not possible to have another Franco and Renata. They are singing with voices and styles of their (after war) generation. To have such singers we have to recreate the whole generation and this is not possible.

@@wookinooki9023 This is what people believe. Especially those, who do not know history. History of society , history of sciences, of arts and of opera, in particular. To sing like these two requires not only good vocal teachers, but the audience accustomed to quality singing and having general culture above certain level. Opera was made by nobility and for nobility. Nowadays, even the most noble are not noble and the rest...goes to listen to Lady Gaga. She is making, incidentally, more than $70 million per year.

In addition to the great, expressive singing of one of opera's most heart tugging duets, the set design representing the then recently opened Metropolitan Opera House in Lincoln Center was a nice touch.

Two of the all time greats, perhaps the greatest recorded pairing in this magnificent finale to one of the very greatest operas, and one on my top 2 labourites for the combination of fabulous music and a a realistic but terrible human story,,,the other being Pagliacci.

Caro signore, mi fa pensare, che lei, come me, ha avuta la fortuna di ascoltare i :"Grandi " Bastianini come numero uno! Meravigliose voci che ci hanno fatto amare con la loro arte I bei repertori operistici, dei gradi compositori, e le meravigliose arie. come ad esmpio Paolo Tosti. Chi ignora tutto questo perde molto nel sentimento umano. Oggi purtroppo siamo al punto che siamo. Il tempo passa! Culture che si abbandonano, ed altre che nascono. (per chi le accetta) Cosi`non resta che farci tesoro di tutto quello che abbiamo nella nostra memoria. Grazie della sua risposta. Cordiali saluti Mirella Sanseviero. .

@@mirellasanseviero472 no, purtroppo no, sono nato anni dopo la scomparsa di Bastianini! Tutti i GRANDI io conosco solo dai dischi. Ma la grandezza delle loro voci e della loro arte è tale che mi sentivo sempre attratto a loro, i grandi artisti della lirica italiana e mondiale del dopoguerra 😊 Si, è vero che Bastianini si trova tra i miei più amati cantanti, ascoltare della sua voce mi da sempre tanta gioia e soddisfazione, credo che era insuperabile nei ruoli come Rodrigo marquis Posa, Don Carlo di Vargas, Conte di Luna, Marcello e, forse soprattutto, Carlo Gerard e Renato (BALLO). La sua voce possedeva le qualità di rara bellezza (il famoso bronzo e velutto), il suo canto era di certa nobiltà. Purtroppo, come sappiamo, Ettore era, nelle parole d'Otello, una "pia creatura nata sotto maligna stella" - ci ha lasciato troppo presto... ma è anche per questo ragione che apprezzo la sua arte moltissimo, con il cuore pieno di gratitudine per il dono del suo canto. Ugualmente però mi piacciono gli altri di quel epoca, quel periodo degli anni 40, 50, 60, anche 70. Che ricchezza di voci, di artisti lirici di livello mai visto prima o dopo. Adoro la Tebaldi, ma anche la Cerquetti, la Stella, la Frazzoni, la Price, la Carteri, mi piacciono molto anche la Callas, la Milanov, la Stella, molti altri. E poi, quanti bravi tenori, mezzosoprani, baritoni, bassi... ogni tipo di voce umana era rappresentato dai nomi numerosissimi, e non erano solo gli artisti italiani ma anche tedeschi, francesi, spagnoli, americani, russi, svedesi... oggi pero siamo dove siamo. Io al teatro più non vado, e da più che 18 anni. Non mi danno la soddisfazione i cantanti di oggi, non riescono a trasmettere nessuna emozione. E spesso non cantano bene, con le sue voci ingolate, proiezione scura... poi lascia a desiderare la qualità delle produzioni sceniche moderne, prodotte dagli "artisti" chi non capiscono e non rispettano gli intenzioni di compositori, non capiscono e non rispettano la funzionalità e le limitazioni della voce umana. Mettono in scena produzioni ridicolose, costumi bruttissimi... un tempo fa qualcuno mi diceva che la lirica ha bisogno di me, del pubblico come me. Forse aveva ragione. Ma io non voglio andare al teatro per soffrire. Opera era creata per andare al teatro ed ascoltare DAL VIVO, lo so, e questo mi manca. Invece, però, mi sono limitato ad ascoltare i dischi. Non è ideale ma almeno il canto è questo che mi piace e mi emoziona. Ho 44 anni, so cosa mi piace e cosa no 😉 chiedo scusa per il mio italiano un po' semplice ma non è la mia lingua madre! Voglio dirle per prima cosa che il suo italiano è molto buono e che non ha niente da scusarsi, anzi, per questo lei puo` apprezzare molto di piu` l'Opera a parte poi, si sa`, l' amore per la musica. I, 50, 60 e 70 sono stati gli anni felici della lirica e tutti i nomi che lei menziona ( nel giro del mondo)sono state voci eccezzionali e ben preparate. Allora si rispettavano le categorie vocali ogni qualita` vocale il proprio repertorio. Oggi, Nemorino canta anche Otello e Gilda canta pureTurandot. Le voci assolute non erano ancora di moda, specialmente nei 50! Io, nata molto prima di Lei, ho potuto sentirle in teatro queste voci ( non tutte ovvio) e posso dirle che su i dischi che lei ascolta le voci sono molto fedeli perche` a quel tempo erano buone incisioni. Quelle di oggi molto hm .. differenti. Purtroppo quel tempo e` passato, ma lei tenga cara la sua collezzione. Fa piacere sentire persone giovani come lei appassionate e sostenitrici di una forma d'arte cosi` bella.. Veramente si, il teatro avrebbe bisogno di molte persone come lei. IL pubblico di oggi acetta tutto, nessuno si interessa nemmeno dei compossitori, tutto e` basato sulle produzioni, piu` brutte sono e piu` appludano, per i cantanti poi.. ( si dice qui in giro ) Prima belli e poi bravi. Dico io, allora perche` non fanno il cinema e lasciano in pace l'Opera? I never could get used to the sharp edge in Tebaldi's voice after her retraining following her beloved mother's death. Earlier she was very good. Corelli is as always absolutely outstanding. A tenor of which the like we will not see soon again. He is magnificent.

A while back a soprano I knew asked if there was any tenor who looked & sounded like Corelli at that time. The answer being there was no one else then or even now for that matter. I always felt Tebaldi was a pretty fine vocal actress. Having suffered Polio as a child did inhibit her stage movement somewhat but she more than compensated for this with her other unique qualities. Here, in this selection, probably mid to late 1960’s, she sounds to me nearly as wonderful as she had ten or so years before this broadcast. Only some of the sweetness in her sound, as during her absolute prime, is missing here but the power & richness in the timbre of her instrument is still a marvel. But oh that hairdo, Renata! It does not matter that much, I guess, as there are really few if there are any voices like hers these days & she still appears attractive. As for Corelli, he still remains up till now the king for roles such as this, IMO.

Tebaldi is always criticized by the fans of Maria Callas for not being a good actor but she was very engaging and entrancing to watch on stage as this clip demonstrates. It is rumored that Tebaldi had an ongoing affair with Corelli and their chemistry here is palpable. Very exciting and dynamic performance.

@@ginopietracupa4305 Callas and Tebaldi were both outstanding Artist in their own way. They were like Apples and Oranges and why people ever compared them I do not know. The beauty and warmth and timbre of Tebaldi's voice and the range and flexibility of Callas cannot be disputed . I love them both for their unique gifts and appreciate what each one gave to their Art.

Which is funny because I remember hearing in interview of Callas where she actually says about Tebaldi “I wish I had her voice”

@@Joshua-or6nl Tebaldi did have a gorgeous instrument. I saw and heard her late in her career and her voice was still opulent and large. Her Butterfly, Tosca, Mimi and Aida are amongst the best I have heard. Her Adriana was also lovely !

@@joemiller6975 Yes she did a amazing Adriana and funny if you look up pictures of them together Callas and Tebaldi were hugging because Callas had watched her show as Adriana and went to congratulate her. And the late great Joan Sutherland adored Tebaldi as well
