Dominions 6 Rise of the Podcaster first thoughts part 3

Ойындар

The third and final episode of our first thoughts about dominions 6. Not satisfied with all the flaming, we wade into the contentious pricing debate. We also discuss the great new soundrack.
Keep in mind that this was recorded shortly after launch, and that prices, sales, and bugs may be different by the time you listen.

Price is 100% a barrier to entry. Price doesn't make a good product bad, but it does stop people from trying a product.

Accept that as a small indie integrating mods into your game is part of your job. Don't "it feels like stealing" me, when people would make you put it in the game if they could.

Demo seems like a lot of work for a game where the selling point is the depth/complexity and the issue is player retention. I owned dom 5 for literal years and bounced off it like 6 times before I finally played a full game and figured out what was so good about it. I think the biggest thing that could be done would be to make a tutorial in-game that has players doing the cool things that the game offers rather than having several sets of youtube videos where the prospective player is talked at for 10x 45 min long chunks. Obviously that would require a lot of work and thats something Illwinter has decided against which is fine, but seems silly to have so many convos about new players and dance around the UI or intuitiveness of mechanics or even price without talking about the very apparent lack of in-game onboarding. Not that im not thankful for all the instructional content people put out for dominions but those should be secondary to picking the game up and just hitting play. Amazing Cultivation Simulator is similarly complex but that game both has a comprehensive tutorial and has a button on basically every UI element that opens an in-game forum.

I think there's two assumptions you're making regarding the beta. 1. That the beta testers did not report the bugs which existed on launch. 2. That those bugs existed during the beta testing period. There are many bugs which were reported, sometimes numerous times, they either never got fixed or the fixes didn't work, or the fixes later regressed and the bugs reappeared. On the second point, many of the bugs did not exist during the period when beta testers were testing the content containing the bug. The testing was happening during active development after all, with significant things (like loads of IDs) changing close to launch. It's quite possible that an open beta may have resulted in fewer bugs on launch, but far from certain.

Your nose is so dark a shade of brown Sombre they are going to have to come up with a new color. The Beta team failed twice - 1 to fix bugs and 2 to notify the customers that what was coming out was still unfinished and customers should hold off on their purchase. Same problem with Dom5 release - too many life-long illwinter leghumpers and not enough gamers.

"Gamers" are a lowest common denominator, can't recognize how more and more effective corporitization is ruining games regardless of how blatantly and often bites them on the ass while they scream endlessly about shit that doesn't matter. If you "identify" as a gamer in the modern day unironically then it's because there's nothing actually worth while about you as a person and you should keep your mouth shut at all times.

To add some flame to the price debate. For me in Russia game cost was around 17 USD. For my buddies in Kazakhstan and Ukraine 23.5 USD and 22 USD respectively. That's without 10% lauch cut.

120 BRL in Brazil, about 25 USD. If it was 40 USD I wouldn't be able to afford it (justify it, actually) with my salary.

As someone from brazil I can guarantee the only reason I haven't bought the game yet is the price. 120 bucks for us here, and it is something like a a tenth of a monthly pay. So yes, it is indeed a barrier. Right now I am pirating it and playing like a madman, but I am not using any mods and I am saving money to buy it. I should have it by either this month or next.

As someone who bought Dom4 and 5, played for thousands of hours, the cost of the game didn't bug me. I do worry if it keeps newer players from trying it out. A friend of mine played Dom4 with us for a few games but couldn't justify the pricetag on 6 given that he only played it with us. Not sure how many of those players there are, but there's an anecdote anyway.

Ice Lance would be a little better if it zapped back to your hands after using it because it's a magic freaking lance (ie you just keep doing lance attacks) Magic pidgeon should be able to carry anything because it's magic allows it to carry any size items due to the pidgeon shrinking those items down in size and weight Magic in this iteration seems to be taking a little longer to become oppressive to regular troops so I think the magic items should shine more. Let these thugs be special with their special gear until filled with crossbow bolts. Just update the descriptions and the tags on items to make it make sense for people.

When it came to buying Dominions 4 for the first time I did what I normally do, and head on over to youtube to see gameplay before buying. A lot of people forget that we've had a lot of inflation over the last 20 years and games only continue to show up for $60 because of the DLC model. Illwinter is charging $45 up front for ~5 years of support and content, and some of the extra increase will be paying for servers to support the new lobby system. If Illwinter were to bill using a DLC model, they could charge $20 up front, and create $5 of paid content a year while wasting dev time coding paywalls to get the same result. I'd much rather pay up front to avoid all that bullshit. To compare the pricing more, consider that you could have bought Dominions 5, or you could have bought Crusaders Kings 3 from Paradox for $50 plus up to $114 of DLC if you actually wanted to play the whole game. Warhammer III is charging $60 base + $263 for DLC hiking its price north of $320. You guys joked about still being willing to spend $80-$100 on Dominions, but it'd still be far cheaper than a Paradox or CA habit.

not a fair comparison. Those other games reinvested the profits into the game and fixed the problems they had. Dominions has flat out broken features like spellcasting aI or suicide pretenders that are older than my now adult children.

Usually on the community's discord servers (look for them on eth community thread on the steam forums). In 5 this was the only real way to organize games, and most of the activity is still there.

I think that fellow using the "it's not about the price, it's about the value you get for it" argument is using it backwards. All previous releases were accompanied by groundshaking new features and changes. Stuff like implementing simultaneous turns. Now, they want to charge more for a glorified mod of 5. Seriously, is moving astral and nature spells into a "new" path and horses being a separate entity worth $45 to you? Like, say this wasn't released and somebody was selling a mod that did everything 6 did at that price point, would you buy it?

If 70-90 dollars is now the cost of a AAA game, is 40 dollars still the cost of a B game? I feel like if AAA game change their prices, B games should be able to do so as well. If they should is, of course, another discussion.

Steam has really been fucking around with regional prices across the board, very bad. Hope they get their head out of their ass and stop being prejudiced against countries with slightly less robust economies(mostly people fucked over by the US, the EU, and China, and Russia to a less broad extent.)
