DOM PERIGNON vs Louis Roederer CRISTAL Champagne: Worth the Hype?

Dom Perignon and Louis Roederer Cristal are two of the most sought-after Champagnes in the wine world. They dictate premium prices and are associated with a luxurious lifestyle. In this video I will compare the latest releases of both Champagne houses - Dom Perignon vintage 2013 and Louis Roederer Cristal vintage 2015. Let’s see which one would be the best choice for your next special event or victory celebration.

    It's so interesting you mentioned smoke as an aroma note on the Cristal. I was fortunate to try the 2015 quickly in a tasting this year and for a split second, upon entering my palate, it reminded me of some premier mezcals I've tasted (of which smoke, is a common tasting note). Glad Dom Perignon held its own in this tasting, as Cristal is quite more expensive in my market lol. Thanks for another great video 👍

    Gurl, you went there lol! Great presentation and very timely info given the Holiday season, but also very helpful in easing the intimidation factor these Classic Champagnes can often present for those new to these High-End bubbles. I think it would be awesome if you would do a presentation comparing a current release of either of these champagnes with a well-aged back vintage to discuss the sometimes profound evolution these Champagnes can experience in the bottle. You could also incorprate a discussion of the amazing P2 and P3 releases of Dom Perignon. Thanks again and Merry Christmas!

As for other champagne videos, I personally would be interested in a comparison of non-prestige cuvée vintage champagnes (Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage / Louis Roederer Vintage / Veuve Clicquot Vintage for example). Priecīgus Ziemassvētkus Agnese! so far I only had Dom Pérignon (I opened a 2003 two years ago) and it was awesome, even though I can't really justify the premium over, say, a regular Billecart-Salmon or a Roederer, which do 98% of the job for 25% of the price. that said, I'm currently searching for something that could be a theme for a future video here: good value prestige cuvées - for as much an oxymoron this idea seems to be. Perrier-Jouët prices their Belle Époque at half the price of a Cristal, and Taittinger's Comtes de Champagne (which I know is a favourite at Domaine de No Sediment in Riga) is also less pricey than the two bottles you featured today. not to mention Amour de Deutz or the prestige offerings from grower producers. maybe it doesn't make sense to talk about value in this price point but this is an idea that I've been flirting with for some time...

    It is generally not recommended to swirl sparkling wines to increase the volume of fruit. The CO2 bubbles spreads the nose and volatile aromas of the wine. Besides flattening the wine the swirling increases the acid levels in the wine left in the glass. Swirl if you want but the CO2 bubbles does the work for you.

  • @NoSediment

    @NoSediment

    6 ай бұрын

    Increase the acid levels? 🤔

  • @winemoneysong

    @winemoneysong

    6 ай бұрын

    To begin with Champagne is a wine that has high acid levels. The Co2 bubbles disburse the fruit aromas and volatile compounds. By swirling the wine you diminish and let aromatics float into the air thus leaving a wine of high acidity sans the lost fruit nuances which highlights the acid left in the wine. Picture if you shake a bottle of soda and rid the fluid of the CO2 what is left is a flat dull drink. The Champagne producers work hard to capture those precious pearls of CO2 thru a pain staking aging process. By swirling the wine you are throwing those complex compounds to the wind and leaving a wine of natural high acidity. When I was visiting a famous Champagne producer many years ago the chef of the cave commented to one of my business associates who was swirling the contents of the glass to please don’t do that because we work so hard to age and capture those bubbles which brings those distinctive nuances that only can be found in Champagne. I know it’s counterintuitive because swirling air into red and white wines help bring out the hidden properties in the wines but with sparkling wines it seems to dissipate those qualities. Plus I find that using Champagne flutes restricts the finite nuances found in sparkling wines. I prefer regular white wine glasses which allows a larger surface for the bubbles to deliver their magic. Glass choice is a personal preference though. With the prices of those wines wines (which I have been enjoying for decades) Cristal and Dom being priced like they are you want get the maximum enjoyment out of them.

  • @NoSediment

    @NoSediment

    @winemoneysong I highly doubt that pH level or TA changes by swirling. Sorry 🤷‍♀️

  • @winemoneysong

    @winemoneysong

    6 ай бұрын

    @@NoSediment I did’t say it changes the total acidity or ph levels. That is something you implied. Wine is a living compound which when disturbed changes it’s chemical structure. As I wrote it is counterintuitive because exposing red and white wine to more oxygen helps coax more of the hidden nuances out of the wine. Have you ever heard anyone decanting Champagne? I don’t think so. You don’t want to remove one of the main elements that makes sparkling wine so distinctive (those haunting CO2 bubbles). Try this experiment with two bottles of the same Champagne, shake one of the bottles viciously and pop the cork and release the foamy bubbles then open the undisturbed bottle and serve the wines side by side. A big taste difference! An extreme example but when you swirl the sparkling wine you are not opening up the flavors you are dissipating the flavor compounds into the air. This is a very academic conversation but wines this distinctive deserves merits serious thought. It’s not whether you agree or not, it is basic chemistry but very few consider. Thanks!

    I have tried Dom, Krug, Belle Opaque and grand dame. Yes they are good, yes their bubbles is very fine. But let me tell you something. It doesnt have to be about the best of the best to appreciate champagne. NV are as good. Give Bollinger, veue, baron rothchild, taittinger, lauren pierre, p jouget a try. You will absolutly be addicted to it. For me, these NV are the best and can beat Dom anytime. If i can share some bad experiance interms of my personal taste, i'd stay away from Moet and Drapier.

    I think each of these Champagnes have their place and time, and they are beautiful on their own, I agree! And yet, sometimes You want to have something elevated in Your glass, something special. 🍾✨🥂

    @blaircalvin5025 just as with everything luxurious, price is rarely determined by how much it costs to produce. It is the quality, the name, the association with that brand and people wanting to be part of that circle, and in this case relative scarcity. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

    There is nothing more luxury than Ace of Spade Champagne! Cost the same as Christal, taste like Moët. If this ain’t balling, I don’t know what is.

    You should have said "There is nothing more fake luxury" than Ace of Spades. The Moët you are comparing it to costs about $49 as opposed to Ace of Spades $300.

    @@NoSediment Because it's a chemical additive that's unnecessary. My friend owns a winery and makes the best wine I've ever had that's sulfite free. He's got the lab tests to prove that as well.

    For me Krug has characteristics unattainable by both and when I evaluate Champagne wines it is always my point of reference. I find Crystal excellent but very "pimp", ideally approachable by a joyful company of friends while Krug has such a demanding complexity that I would not recommend it to those who like to distract themselves with a glass in hand but only to those who want to try a unique organoleptic experience. The Dom is exactly halfway between the two because it combines freshness and fun with an aristocratic personality and great depht.
