650 $ CHAMPAGNE ?! MASTER of WINE Tastes two Vintages of Louis Roederer CRISTAL.

Can Champagne be perfect? I am tasting two of the best Louis Roederer CRISTAL.
Follow me on ...:

Check out my websites:
meinelese.de
I have used this glass in this Video: RIEDEL Veritas Champagne
I have tasted the following wines in this Video:
2008 Louis Roederer Cristal
2013 Louis Roederer Cristal
Today I am going to explore the difference between vintages and aged wine. But I did not pick any wine for this experiment. Instead, I got two bottles of Roederer Cristal, one of the most expensive Champagnes and I am going to taste them here with you … and you know what - it is still morning so I would call this a pretty good start into the day. The producer behind this wine is Louis Roederer a family-owned estate - which is increasingly rare for the bigger houses in Champagne
Even though its history goes back into the 19th century Cristal was not commercially available until it was first released to the market in 1945 and it is now only produced in the best vintages. Today It is one of the most expensive and most iconic champagnes. Special about Roederer is that they own 240 hectares supplying around 70% of the fruit they need which is exceedingly rare for bigger Champagne houses. Roughly half of their vineyards are certified organic, and they do biodynamic farming as well. All Cristal blends are 100% biodynamic since 2012. 45 different parcels are being used for Cristal and they pick the best ones every vintage. The Cristal is a vintage Champagne which means that the grapes are exclusively from that specific vintage and represent the quality of that year. Most of the Champagnes are non-vintage so it is generally the better and more expensive wine and the higher quality grapes go into it. Comparing these too wines is fairly easy as the two vintages were made in more or less the same way.

    This was my first time watching this channel, I liked and subscribed. During the last 6 months, I have enjoyed 6 extraordinary bottles of champagne, five of the 2008 vintage and one 2007 as follows: 2007 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rosé, 2008 Bollinger La Grande Année Brut, 2008 Piper-Heidsieck Brut Vintage Rare, 2008 Dom Pérignon Brut, 2008 Louis Roederer Cristal Brut, and saving the best for last, the 2008 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs. I scored the Piper a 98, the Bolly a 99, the Taittinger Rosé a 99, the Dom a 99, and both the Cristal and Comtes de Champagne a perfect 100. I have been enjoying fine (and some not so fine) champagne since 1982, when I was given my first bottle of Dom Pérignon. Thanks for an informative and well done presentation!

    Wonderful video. What a morning! I have two answers to your question and it’s a very personal thing. Bollinger is my favourite Grand Marque and their 02 was a special moment for me and it was a pleasure to serve for a good price at the Restaurant. Now, it’s not a vintage champagne per se, but Jacquesson was the first champagne that got me really excited about the winemaking side of Champagne. 736 was the first Cuvee I had by them, so I’ve fond memories. Not Champagne, but Nyetimber’s 2004 vintage was excellent upon release, and there are some 09s in their cellar that they release to special accounts. Dermot Sugrue is currently making the best sparkling wine in the country, and his 2010 was outstanding

    For me one mind changing experience was the Dom Perignon 2000... It was completely different than all other vintages of Dom Perignon I've ever tasted (and of course much better) Besides the "well known", I really enjoy the champagne of Henry Goutorbe and Guy de Chassey. I have also a favor for the "special club" champagnes, even though I haven't tasted them all, yet. Would be a nice topic for a champagne "special" on your channel... ;) Thanks for this channel, I really enjoy watching your videos and trying the wines from your shop! :)

However I’d love them to go lower on the dosage, I always think this kind of quality level deserves to be Extra Brut - what do you think about this ? Also on the differences is it related as well to the fact that the 2008 just got more time in bottle and the 2013 is still pretty much a baby?

    Good vintage Champagne introduction/explainer -- not too shabby! ...my only reaction here is, and it is completely conceptual and kind of silly, that such fine wines should be drunk from finer stemware. Tasting is one thing (as perhaps you want a glass you use regularly for comparison reasons), but I would definitely be pouring this into some handmade crystal (perhaps a Riedel Superleggero..?) in addition to my trusted tasting stem. Such a hard life, eh? Skål !

    While all the Tête de Cuvée bottles are great, I would have to say that my favorite "vintage champagne" isn't a brand, but is the vintage level bottle in a great year such as 08' or 12'. The prices here in the US have risen considerably over the last couple years, leaving me to question the bottles that offer the best value. In fact, maybe you could do a video on that? 08' TdC vs. 08' vintage bottling? Or 12' vs 12'? ... is it worth it anymore?

    Really appreciate your videos! A question, does the 2008, being 5 years older have an unfair advantage over the 13? Also how do you feel be in five years and will it warrant a higher score?

    I wonder if the malolactic fermentation of the 2008 contributed to its superior flavor? What do you think?

  • @Ildskalli

    @Ildskalli

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good question! I don’t think that Konstantin mentioned any of the typical malolactic descriptors (butter, dairy, cream, etc.), so they probably weren’t super clear or strong, but the lower acidity on the 2008 definitely comes from the malo. So, maybe the more rounded, less intense sourness was the defining factor, due to malo?

  • @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine

    @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine

    Maybe - The long time on the lees and the freshness of the vintage certainly also helped! Difficult to limit this to one factor, especially because only a small part of the wine went through MLF.

    I would like to see what you think about the Dom Pérignon 2003 P2.I was able to try it recently at a tasting. The presenter talked about the uniqueness of the vintage because of 2003 being a particularly hot year. It was a huge hit. We tried a 2010 vintage earlier in the tasting but the 2003 was something else.

    Hello Konstantin, you showed us a graph of price vs quality in one of your other videos. Do you know the price threshold in USD for a 750ml red and white wine bottle where the quality is at its highest but the price is at the lowest? Basically at what price point does paying more no longer increases quality for both white and red wines in general. Thanks!

  • @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine

    @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine

    2 жыл бұрын

    It depends on the origin of the wine. In Europe, it would be around the 20 Euro mark when the quality does not increase significantly if you pay more. That does not mean that a wine that costs 30 EUR is not better than a wine that costs 20 EUR, but a point on the 100 point scale gets more and more expensive. I would guess that it would be around the 30-40 $ mark in the USA. In regions like Champagne, Napa, Burgundy the dynamics are different though.

    You should try and research Branson B champagne and cognac. He use to be a exclusive weed dealer in harlem NY had o ly the best pot and the rappers would go there to buy. But he was in love with champagne, wine etc and came out with his own brand. I think 50 cent the rapper own a piece of the brand. But the story is legendary and I heard his champagne and cognac is not too shabby you should really look it up check it out.

    The best I’ve ever had was Dom Perignon 2008. Here are my notes: Smell: funky fermentation, yeasty, musky, alluring. More fragrant than other champagne I’ve had. Taste: rich, creamy, oaky, musty Finish: fruity and acidic Overall: concentrated fragrance and taste. A complex taste experience.

    Maybe this is a stupid question but is it really not a problem to let champagne sit for a few hours? I can imagine that the flavour gets rounder, but wouldn't we lose most of the co2 at some point?

  • @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine

    @KonstantinBaumMasterofWine

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, we would. The bottles were in the fridge during that period but the glasses just sat there. It is interesting to taste the wines with less CO2 - but they are not loosing all CO2 - and at a higher temperature as the falvor profile changes.
