    Which would kind of make sense. This ISN'T a happy song, which makes it so weird to hear it so upbeat. I got drunk once and watched a bunch of covers of the song (don't judge), and so many of the singers, especially the English as a second language sing the song with huge smiles on their face, but this is a song of desperation.

    I am convinced that the actual recording was sped up considerably before Dolly did her final vocal take. There is something about that backing track that always sounded wrong to me. This slowed down version actually proofs that for me.

    @@ChrisEchoes I think what happens is it converts it from country music to a kind of rock ballad. But those tight guitar riffs. Right and syncopated, and then loosens up to sustain and ring out the notes. Genius

  • @MartinWeeksmw

    @MartinWeeksmw

    5 жыл бұрын

    Actually that's more accurate then you might think. More often then not, a producer or the "Label" will insist on speeding up a song... they don't want slow ballads... just to make better sales. the most well known example of this is the Beatles Song "Revolution." The version on the "White Album" is how John Paul George and Ringo actually recorded it originally and wanted it to be marketed. But the Genius's at EMI insisted they speed it up and make it a rocker to balance with the slow ballad feel of Hey Jude. (The A part of the Double A Radio Release.) I wish The "Suits" would stop trying to be rock stars and just stick to their number crunching. Let the Artist be an Artist. The other thing about this slowed down version is you really come to appreciate how vocally strong Dolly's voice really is... not a single badly sung note in the whole thing and she did the harmonies as well. It shows off her truly brilliant vocal skills because you hear every note.

    In my family, we gave Death a name, we named her Jolene after my great-grandma’s twin who died of tuberculosis, so to me this song has always been about a woman fighting for Death(Jolene) to not take her husband to where ever he’ll end up, or the wife of a man who’s been seduced by Death’s warm embrace fighting to keep him alive. I dunno, it’s an interesting interpretation imo

    To me it demonstrates what incredible pitch, Dolly has. Not one note is flat or 'pitchy'. She doesn't need 'mechanical pitch manipulation', as so many contemporary artists do. Yes, the pitch of her voice is much lower, but her performance is so strong it shows what a great singer Dolly Parton really is. I have to say I was not prepared to 'like' this, but I do.

    Do you realize what 'mechanical pitch manipulation' (just say autotune ffs its literally an award winning program ya fuckin hipster) actually does? Its great singers that use it because a 99% perfect take can be made 100% perfect instead of doing twenty+ takes. It's to save the artists money on recording time because literally nobody makes money in music anymore. Back in her day there wasn't much competition, now we have a lot of artists in an ironically smaller market. stop trying to play the 'im enlightened' or whatever card, because I guarantee you that no singer complains about autotune. back in her day it wasnt unheard of to spend a million on a record now most people even big names can only budget a couple thousand 🙄

    Fun Fact: Dolly Parton wrote this song after a teller flirted with her husband. She based the looks of “Jolene” after a fan at one of her shows and created this song from the perspective of a woman and her fear of losing the man of her life and the irrational fear one can have. For those who have or had someone they loved you can understand the fear of losing the love of your life.

    @L Tenor is usually the higher range of male voices. Lower than the lowest common range for female voices. Her singing voice would be unusually low, though not as low as a deep male voice. There's 6 basic pitch categories for singers: Soprano - Highest pitches, often used in opera kzread.info/dash/bejne/nmV3mrB_dMesico.html Mezzo-Soprano - Mid-range female voices, usually. Most female pop singers. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pGFnsNh9oJWehZc.html Alto - Typically lower female voices. kzread.info/dash/bejne/c2R6m86haLfPg7A.html Tenor - Typically higher male voices. kzread.info/dash/bejne/daKFmrBqe8TJesY.html Baritone - Middle range male voices. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nqmro69_k8aYlps.html Bass - Lowest range voices. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZWp5pMZrgZeTl8o.html Of course, any gender can have any voice, but what's listed above are the most common / expected ones. To be complete, one might argue that this doesn't apply to pop singing at all: www.reddit.com/r/singing/comments/lenjev There are also a lot of subcategories and other types of categories for pop singing: thepopsmarts.com/vocal-classifications-fachs/ General Reference: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voice_classification_in_non-classical_music

    Slowed down this song is viscerally sublime; haunting; surreal; amazingly otherworldly. It takes your mind down the proverbial rabbit hole into the dark, grasps hold and doesn't let go. Once it is over you feel different somehow. Set it on repeat so you can jump back in and stay down deep painting a mentally phantasmagoric canvas within the darkness.
