My local library has a seed library...you take what you need for free and when what you've grown goes to seed, you give some back to the library. Wonderful program.

That's so awesome! As far as I've been able to find out, my local library doesn't run one, but there's a woman nearby who runs her own seed and plant library, and while I haven't been able to visit yet, it seems like a really fantastic asset to the community.

Mine does too here in the SW suburbs of Chicago. It’s such a wonderful program for all types of gardeners. I had no idea it even existed until recently. Check out your local library website or call them. If they don’t have one, they may be able to suggest a nearby library who does. I potted all my seeds in pots, due to living in a townhouse with no yard. I had tons to donate to the seed library.

Lisa Dawn I have a story that you are gonna love. I have started some tomato plants in my greenhouse and one day I decided to put them outside. A few hours later I went out and a deer had come along and eaten them. A few weeks later I went to my local thrift store and sometimes they have free produce. Well that day he had tomatoes and asked me if I wanted a box of tomato so I got a 28 pound box of tomatoes free!

Best way to start is dive right in. Remember never place fertilizer directly in plants. Egg shells are great. Black banana are wonderful for Rose's, just smash it against the base. Corn needs multiple rows to fertilize and grow. Dawn with a splash of mouthwash for a safe pesticide. Pots are great because u can follow the sun. A kids hard plastic pool some holes and few rocks make a great mobile garden for tomatoes and potatoes. Never plant cucumbers by melons as they cross pollinate. Cantaloupe will be like a watermelon inside and cucumber will be orange like cantaloupe haha delicious but hilarious.

I love your "from seed to harvest" video! You were even open with your mistakes and as a beginner gardener, I appreciate that, because goodness knows I'll be making mistakes myself!

I lost all my Bell pepper seedlings one year and scrambled to replant them so went to Dollar Tree. These peppers turned out the best Ive ever grown. The beans, squash and zinnias are really great and you can save the zinnia seeds. Also the Valley Greene seeds sold at Menards for .69 per pack are very good. Both companies have awesome selections. I have used the Dollar Tree cloches (just dont leave in hot sun 😊. Their plant clips, 7” plastic pots with built in water trays are great for up potting etc, hanging basket chains and liners, clippers have all worked out well for me too. I hit DT as soon as they put their stuff out in January. Many seeds can be viable for 5 years. MI Gardener said all these seeds are AS GOOD as the fancier brands. One You Tuber I foolw said these seeds are junk. THE DT seeds are just as good as any seed I have grown. I save the plastic chicken trays from Aldi. They are sooo sturdy. TIP: plastic plant markers are best. Reuse by using a scrubby to take off the previous writing. 😊. Also platic pots can be freshened up with chalk paints and plastic spray paint.

In my Sunday school class, we start planting seeds early so that They are ready to give to the mothers for Mother’s Day! And the children love putting the seeds in the pot and watching them grow. And I can’t remember for sure if I bought some of them at dollar tree but I know several I got from Dollar General, and they are the same brand 4/$1

And the little plants grew, I had a few seeds left over put some in pot for myself and they look really good right now. I chose zinnias.

I run a small nursery, so I understand the joy that each new leaf brings:) Growing/gardening can bring such happiness and wonder that cannot be replicated. Keep it up! I would love to send you a plant to bring your garden indoors. I mainly focus on aroids, like philodendrons and anthuriums, although I do grow edibles year round for personal use.

That's quite a great spread of veggies you have there! A caution: Be careful with morning glories. They'll take over like weeds. Pretty for sure, but prolific.

If you soak some banana peels in water for 3 or 4 days and water your tomatoes with them, they LOVE it. :)

Lisa, I think you did very well, in spite of a few mistakes that you learned from....I love the way you repurpose everything.....and using sticks in such a creative manner......and the old Easter basket with the handle cut off for gathering your harvest....you are a very resourceful girl and I know your Mom and your boyfriend appreciate your efforts and the delicious veggies......

I'm in Jacksonville, FL and I learned through error that planting tomatoes in spring won't work for me. It gets HOT fast & maters drop blossoms over 90 degrees. I have to plant most veggies in the fall to get a harvest. But, there is less pest pressure in the fall.💚

I've been watching some Florida garden content creators, and the difference in growing seasons is so interesting!

I have a small balcony and l use 5 gallon buckets for my veggie garden. I got some of those hanging pots from $ Tree that can hang on my balcony rail for my herbs. It taste so much better when you grow your on food.

You could use the seeds that are in the tomato to grow next year. Just save some of the seeds.

If you look at your old videos saw your dollar tree haul for $20 for you and Andrew I added $2 really appreciate you taking time to show people how to cook delicious food on a budget I care for my mom who is in her 70s so your videos are much appreciated thanks for sharing

And thank you for filming over the months to share it with us. ❤️ I live in a very windy portion of WA, and we have two shopping carts that ran away during past wind storms, that they stores didn’t want to come get. I have major back issues, but have always enjoyed gardening. This year I used cardboard and weed barrier sheeting to line the cart, the planted two tomatoes and some green onions (bunching onions??) in it. They are doing great, and are SO easy for me to care for. I’m even able to wheel it to a new place on the patio if they need more/less sun. I have a bunch of tomatoes I have not-so-patiently waiting to turn red.

I used old milk jugs. I washed them out and cut off the tops. Make sure to poke drain holes in the bottom though! I didn’t and they got icky fast. Once I did, they were much better.

Your hair is so pretty and so full. A lot of people envy that. Keep up the amazing videos.

While your at the dollar tree pick up some resin. Paint it onto your tongue depressors and let them dry. You'll never have to replace your plant lables again. I use paint sticks. I printed out a picture of what I was planting and glued it to the top of the stick. Then directions of how to plant, when to plant and harvest and marked on it how deep to plant and spacing before putting the resin on it. They're beautiful and functional and virtually indestructible. Good luck with your gardens this 💜

I got all my garden supplies from dollar tree in the last two years while it was still a dollar lol seeds were amazing four packs for a dollar and containers also a dollar and tools etc. also the majority of the herbs and flowers and vegetable seeds that I got were heirloom so that’s great! I saved my seeds now I have seeds for years and what I grow I can get the same great vegetables and flowers! Good luck to y’all!

Hi Lisa! Wow!! I am VERY impressed with what you did with your garden!! ...and for the first time (since a long time ago)! I REALLY enjoyed watching your gardening video! You could tell that you were really enjoying the gardening. I’m amazed that you started with so much, for a first time. I know that you will surely enjoy the fruits (vegs!) of your labor! I tried having a yard garden, my first year after moving to the country. It was fun to watch it grow, but the animals (bunnies, etc) would eat everything in it. Then my puppy would steal the zucchini, squash and play with them as balls. I never tried it again. Watching your video really inspires me to try to have another garden next year. I can’t believe how early you got tomatoes, etc., it seems early, but I don’t really know anything about gardening! Kudos to you! 👍 I know that it’s a lot of work! Andrew and your mom will love the vegs, too! NOTHING like HOME GROWN, either! Thank you for sharing your process!! I love you! ❤️

I started my dollar tree garden in February this year and have had a 95% sprout rate. Everything is growing better then expected. I tell anyone who will listen about these seeds, as well as sharing my seedlings with other gardeners. It’s not such a leap when you spend a fraction of your initial gardening costs.

Seeds last! I planted seeds from 2018 and they still came up. You can pack them up in a ziplock and store in the back of the fridge, or a cool dark place. I had great success with the dollar tree seeds this year! Way to GROW! :)

You did an awesome job for your first time!!! I've been gardening for over 35 years. I still have failures. That's just the nature of gardening. This year was especially tricky because here where I live in Texas it got so hot so fast. I didn't get hardly any tomatoes this year. I did get a lot of beets, yellow squash, cucumbers, okra, peppers, green onions, yellow onions, potatoes, and beans. I did try some dollar tree flower seeds this year. I grew zinnias and marigolds. Both are still out there and are massive plants. A suggestion is if you grow heirloom seeds then you can save the seeds to grow again next year. Hybrid seeds do not produce the same type of plant from seed.

I figure if you're not failing sometimes, you're not learning anything new! I'm lucky to live in an area with a very active gardening community, so next year I plan to get involved in plant and seed exchanges. The Dollar Tree seeds are great for the basics, but I'm really looking forward to growing some more interesting varieties next year. I do have a few plants that aren't hybrids that I plan to try out saving seeds as well.

Lisa, I'm an agricultural scientist and I personally think you did great with your garden. I loved watching this video and appreciate the time and effort you put into your growing. You'll get better and learn more every year, but honestly, you seem like a natural! 🙂

You can change your soil slowly. Find a 8x8-12x12 plot on your land that gets sun. Start mixing in your old/used or extra potting soils and any bagged dirts people offer up on buy nothing. Start a compost bin in the way back of your yard (they stink) and mix that into your soil as it turns. In just a couple years you could have a very viable growing area. All the pruning cuttings from your potted plants 🪴 can go into the plot as well as used coffee grounds and used egg shells. If you get some worms 🪱 working for you that can help change your landscape. Good luck 👍🏻

My youngest daughter and I try to garden. I'm in central NY so our growing season is short. Last year we had so much rain that our container garden drowned, even with drainage holes. We did grow an accidental sunflower by our chicken coop so that was a nice surprise! This year we're growing potatoes in a grow bag and green beans in a pot... if it rains too much, we just put them under a lawn chair, lol!

Gardening is fun and enjoyable and peaceful and it brings you food that you usually buy at the grocery store that's got all kinds of whatever the government is putting in it growing and raising your own food is basically the best way to go at this day and age

I have saved seeds for a couple of years now, with great germination rates. MIgardener seed saving videos are a great resource. You could save those tomato seeds just incase the plant doesn't overwinter! GREAT video!!!

Wow! You did great. I am growing tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, peppers, zucchini, cabbage and some herbs. I have a really small yard. I use a lot of pots or grow bags. I also plant sunflowers and wild flowers to draw in the pollinators. I am in western Colorado where it is currently raining. It’s a miracle. 😁

Hello Sunbeam! I have been planting Dollar Tree flowers and bulbs for a few years and am always amazed at how gorgeous they are, my gladiolas come back every year too. I have never grown veggies from seed other than peppers but I will definitely try them next year. You don't need to clone anything. Just take one of the fruit from the "hybrid 100" and squeeze the seeds onto paper towel. Spread them out and allow to dry and then you have a bunch of little tabs you can break off and plant next year. When something grows well always save some seed from it because they tend to improve year after year when grown under the same conditions in the same general area. Love your channel and great job with the garden.

I think you did amazing especially because this was your first attempt at gardening. It looks like you were going to have a ton of tomatoes!!! My mom could grow anything and I mean anything. She wants to cut the top off of a fresh pineapple and planted it to see if it would grow. It not only grew (it got enormous) it eventually grew a tiny pineapple of its own. IN ALBERTA CANADA. Sorry not sorry for the I just had to emphasize that we were in the middle of winter in Alberta when my mom found this tiny pineapple growing in the middle of her plant. And she did that not once but twice. Me? I can’t grow anything at all.

You did a really good job! I've been gardening for 20 years and still have failures. This year I lost almost every tomato plant I seeded and had to buy plants. It took me four tries to finally get cabbage right. It was worth it.

You would probably need a half acre garden of tilled soil with that many seeds. Lots of work but can't taste better than fresh right out of the garden. Found clay soil is a challenge making compost and tilling into the soil year after year will give you good soil. You are doing great the yield is excellent learning a lot gardeners learn with every planting.

i have a small greenhouse from the previous owner, and a 20x20 foot flat dirt i hand hoed both places are growing dollar seeds wonderfully!! totally real! :) :) they work

I hesitate to give any gardening advice as I'm sure it's very different than here in California where the weather is almost always mild. I've been gardening my whole life and it can be so therapeutic and rewarding. However, you might want to try using biodegradable seedling pots from The Dollar Tree. You can start the seeds in them and then transfer them straight to the garden. That would prevent all of the work you did of transferring, transferring again, and then transferring again. 😁😂 That was a lot of work. I love Buy Nothing groups! I've given and received many garden items. It's fun to give things away and you receive things that save from having to buy them. Love your videos!!!

Ive had a garden for 40yrs....i think you did a wonderful job....trial and error is how you learn....i have failures all the time...different seeds,,weather,,...all come into play..dont beat yourself up...anything that grows is a win win..if you dont try you dont get anything...good luck in the future

I loved your video. I am a beginner and I like that you have had success and it has inspired me to try, especially with the rising grocery prices. One thing I wanted to mention. Have you thought of trying to grow from actual seeds and leftover tops amd roots from your actual vegetables?. For example green onions are really easy to grow from the roots , start thrn in a shallow glass of water, they grow SO fast every day a half an inch or more. Carrot tops, sprout easily in a little water. So does celery. So you don't always have to buy seeds to start out small with just your every day veggies you have trimmed of you save the side with the roots to grow. Potatoes are easy too grow from a potato you can get quite a few plants out of 1 potato cut up. Same with onions. I'm just beginning and that's how I started but now I'm also looking forward to grabbing a few seed packs from Dollar Tree. I also love that you used what you had on hand as far as containers and free ones.

I have a small garden bed outside my apartment. I grow one tomato plant and one cucumber. I love the way the cucumber climbs the trellis and curl around it It’s also really easy to grow green onion! Just plant the white part and away it goes

Hey Lisa, I know you mentioned how you love to add hot sauce to your food. One cool idea for a video in the future if you have not thought of this already would be to make your own hot sauce from the peppers you are growing and jar them in some pretty recyclable glass containers so you save on buying hot sauce. I believe you would be able to make some delicious hot sauce with your awesome cooking skills!!! 😄

Your garden looks great. Last year I had cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes and peppers and the squirrels ate every last plant. I was so upset and haven't tried again. My father in-law is in Illinois and he always had a beautiful tomato garden and he always started planting around St. Paddy's Day.

You may want to check with your local lowes and home depot. They have a free recycle section where they get rid of the empty used pots and trays from the season

Hi from Australia, new subscriber, it’s great to watch a young person putting some much productive effort into managing money. Your garden did better then mine 😁 something large was eating my veggies, so I will move my garden to a different spot for the spring 🌼 Just a little hint when planting in containers make sure they are food safe. I buy my buckets from the local donut shop the frosting is stored in them very cheap. 🌹

plastic water bottles cut in half (32 pack) and the lid to rotissere chicken clear plastic all work great for mini greenhouses and are easy to remove or implement!!

Thank you for posting this! I often see seeds at the Dollar Tree but never knew if they would grow or not. You have a green thumb!

You did an amazing job! Everything you chose was perfect for your yard with low sun. Beets, lettuce, green onions, carrots can be planted (in the ground) about a month before everything else because they love cold. Also snow peas pods :) bit don't follow spacing rules on those. Plant in a straight line, literally side by side. The grow nicely up a trellis that way (without much help) and shade each other as they grow.

I can't have a garden where I live, so I have vegetables in pots on my front porch. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and onions.

Seed library...what an interesting concept.

I bought 8 packs of different DT seeds this year to supplement my usual garden. For comparison I'm also in NC a bit further south than you, and every single pack germinated with decent ( but not fantastic) germination rates. I would say around 70 to 75 percent overall. Not bad at all for 4 packs for a buck though! Hot peppers LOVE our clay soil and turn out super flavorful in it so I would highly recommend transplanting them out into it asap! Make sure to keep your different pepper types ( same for cucs and tomatoes) separated by at least 50 feet if possible, or you might end up with hot sweet peppers and sweet jalopenos lol, as they can cross pollinate.

I freeze my seeds. They say not to but I never had any issues in a airtight bag in freezer. I got some seeds from 5 years ago still able to germinate and grow. Your garden is looking fabulous! I grew all peppers this year. I also got a dwarf lemon and lime tree producing for me. I got some imported (Chili Tepin and Aji Charapita). Would love to send you some exotic pepper seeds girl. I love them! ❤️ 🌶 🫑👌💯

Hi Lisa lovely to watch all your videos. For the plants you want to grow-the hybrid tomato one just keep a couple of the tomatoes for next year and they will come up for you.
