Doing the impossible cut

I have been told for years that you can not cut down a liner glass scale. In this video I test that theory with a wood cutting saw. I think your will be surprised with what I discovered .

Hey guys, I probably made five or six test cuts on 2 different types of expensive scales, and they all were successful not one of them cracked or were made unusable :-)

Great video Dale! I've never had to cut scales, but have researched and wondered about doing the same thing. Is there any way to test, or know if there would be any residual cracking in the glass that remains? Will the reader head still Read, if the remaining scale does have cracks-? Great video nonetheless, & thanks!

Glad it worked. Shows some innovation. Glass will break during cutting much of the time because of heat friction, not to mention too few cutting teeth. I'd have used my tile cutting saw with a glass cutting blade. It'll eat through aluminum easily as well. It's a wet saw so keeping water out of delicate areas would be fairly simple with the foam inserts you utilized. I've several miter saws but I like my carbide blades too much to cut glass with them. Your blade is probably a metal cutting blade, if not, you'll not be doing burn free fine woodworking cuts any longer. Suspect that you don't do much of that anyway, working steel has it's own gratifications. :-)

  • @mapp0v0

On mine I had to cut the glass a little shorter in order to fit the end caps. I uses a band saw for the aluminum and thin cut off wheel for the glass. But they are not a delicate as you would think, and the sensor doesn't go all the way to the end anyway.

Supporting the glass is a brilliant ides but I am surprised it worked,Luckily the Chinese scales don't cost what the US or German ones do. I have supported things like this with parafin wax and then melted it out in hot water. I've seen spray foam used too but is a bigger mess to clean out. I use Newall DRO's where the scale is a tube full of ball bearings. You could likely cut one of those down but I wouldn't do it for fear of upsetting its accuracy. Very brave Dale. Nice job. I wonder how many scales will break today.

There’s another video of a guy cutting his with a harbor freight type bandsaw… I didn’t have the guts to try that with my saw so I just did it with a disc and it cut through it like nothing. They are fragile as hell and you have to be careful, but no guts no glory! Lol

I cut one today. Wrapped the glass with masking tape at the cut point and used a diamond cut wheel in a dremel to cut the glass. Do not be afraid to take the scales apart and cut them. If you need, take pictures of how it comes apart so you can reassemble it. The hardest part of the job is cutting the case. Really, it was stupid simple to do.

To be sure, take the glass out and cut it with a dremel, always a succes. Don it more then once. The endcup will fit then bether because the glasscale is shorter then the aluminium.

Hello Dale, this is very interesting! I was told by several individuals that cutting a glass scale is a no-no! I was lucky that I was able to get my glass scales the exact length that I needed. I have by the way the same DRO, a Ditron D80, as you do and am very happy with the unit! The only complaint that I had was that the manual leaves a lot to be desired! The very first chapter started with item #5 and the translation is terrible. I ended up finding a PDF file that I printed out and it has the missing information! If you care to contact me regarding the DRO, let me know and we can compare notes!

Do you really think nobody has ever cut glass scale before? . i can remember you doing the impossible on a lathe in a previous video , and if my memory is correct on a mill, with a landrover gearbox. Thinking about it i (can) also remember the non spill secret paint spill tip. PS the first chuck jaw grinding video was a real success for a person who can do the impossible.

A couple of weeks ago I shortened The X-axis DRO on my mill (HF/Central Machinery Mini Mill). Instead of trying to saw through the glass I used a carbide tool mounted in my Dremel and scored the glass. I didn't get the clean break I was hoping for but it was good enough. One thing I noticed about your process was that the end of the glass was even with the Aluminum extrusion. I don't know if it is needed, however I cut the glass on my DRO as close to what the factory set into the extrusion about 1/4". Question, did you have any problem fitting the end cap back on the extrusion/DRO? As always, great video! More! More! More!

A woodsaw to cut steel and glass? Andtwo pieces of foammanage to stpo the vibrations completely? Something is not right here, it seem more like aluminiummy and perspexy if a wood-saw can even get hrough it. This has a very april-1st feel about it. I'd definately stick to the "don't try this at home" advice, especially if you're sure it's a waverthin piece of actual glass in there.

vinny142 this is not a miter saw for wood, it’s a cold cut chop saw for metal. still weird that it would cut and not just shatter the glass. btw a regular “wood” miter saw cuts aluminum beautifully

Some people you just can't make happy. :-) In reality the saw never did cut the glass, it just broke it cleanly. Glass is a very interesting material it has some incredibly strong properties. Like I mentioned in the video vibration is your enemy when cutting glass. Believe it or not you can cut thin sheets of glass with scissors underwater. The water absorbs vibration and allows you to trim the glass. I know that sounds like April fools, but give it a try before you make a comment :-)
