    Hey everyone! The "200lb MONSTER" in the title refers to both the fish I lost. I saw the first one come up, nose to tail, and it was a trophy (hence my reaction when it threw the hook). I didn't see the second lost fish, but I've only felt a hookset like that once... you know when. The fish I DID catch probably came in at just 100lb, which is still really nice, but you best believe I'm going back for those monsters! Also... when I said I had never lost a gar on the hookset, I was specifically talking about my line breaking. That's the first gar to ever snap my line (probably an issue with the knot)

    Awesome video as always! Hope your knee is healed up soon! Question: For someone in central Texas, How far south would we need to go to find bait like bullheads, talapia, cichlids, and fish of that variety? In the Belton/Stillhouse lake area, we just have the regular carp, shad, and bluegill varieties. no skipjack or anything like talapia to bait with, and I've heard Talapia makes awesome bait for gator gar, and you seem to catch them pretty frequently.

    @@wildlifefishingshow Excellent! Thanks for the info! One other question, I am trying to decide on a new reel, and I was using the KastKing Rekon's, which work well but have the same problem your salis x reel did. On the hookset, they peel drag, and don't seem to have a solid hookset. How do you like your Shimano tekota for a solid initial hookset? It looks like it performs better.

    First of all, EXCELLENT video. I've never been gar fishing but live in Houston. Will gar not bite a bait with a wire leader? Seriously, I have no idea.

  • @wildlifefishingshow

    @wildlifefishingshow

    Жыл бұрын

    They definitely will bite a wire leader but there's always a small risk of losing the hook or a break off (which happened in this video). A kevlar braided leader isn't going to be as bad in the fish's mouth as it clears the hook over time.

  • @wildlifefishingshow

    @wildlifefishingshow

    Жыл бұрын

    Generally speaking, there's a pause in their movement after they run for a moment, and that's the fish readjusting the bait further into its mouth. I wait for that and let the fish pick up just a bit of speed as it moves off again and that's when I set the hook.

    I didn't see where it was coming from, but it seemed to be bleeding quite a bit. I saw a bloody spot in the mud where you landed it and once you put it back in the water it was bleeding pretty good. Did you notice if it was injured on a rock or something? I'm just curious since I wasn't able to see. I know it will survive just fine.

  • @wildlifefishingshow

    @wildlifefishingshow

    No, just a bit of blood from the hook set. Sometimes when you're unhooking them out of water, the blood will pool in that pouch and the first chance it gets to leave is when the fish gets back in the water, so it looks like more than it is.

    Fish will run with the wind as they are chasing prey also driven by the wind. Was a little surprised you weren't casting 30 ft off the left of that point you were on.

    Big sunken tree to the left. Also, the fish prefer being down current of the ledge, resting in the break in the current it creates.

    Set the hook as soon as they start going and/or use heavy leads. Gar are more likely to just drop the bait in those scenarios.

    @@wildlifefishingshow ahh I see. Because the debris in the bayous I presume. Free line with no weight? Does the bait stay in place or does it move? BTW I won't say the location but I enjoyed the video you did in my home town on the border of Texas and Louisiana. That made my day. If you ever go back I know that road is bad but if you go all the way to the end there's great fishing to be had on that jetty.

    I do respect carp. I'll also occasionally use smaller ones for bait. They're an introduced species over here and are incredibly well populated. If I catch one that I suspect to be anything more than a couple of years old, I wouldn't dare kill it. But the smaller ones are one of the alligator gar's favorite prey items. I'm just facilitating what is normally a natural process.
