Hey everyone! The "200lb MONSTER" in the title refers to both the fish I lost. I saw the first one come up, nose to tail, and it was a trophy (hence my reaction when it threw the hook). I didn't see the second lost fish, but I've only felt a hookset like that once... you know when. The fish I DID catch probably came in at just 100lb, which is still really nice, but you best believe I'm going back for those monsters! Also... when I said I had never lost a gar on the hookset, I was specifically talking about my line breaking. That's the first gar to ever snap my line (probably an issue with the knot)

Awesome video as always! Hope your knee is healed up soon! Question: For someone in central Texas, How far south would we need to go to find bait like bullheads, talapia, cichlids, and fish of that variety? In the Belton/Stillhouse lake area, we just have the regular carp, shad, and bluegill varieties. no skipjack or anything like talapia to bait with, and I've heard Talapia makes awesome bait for gator gar, and you seem to catch them pretty frequently.

@@wildlifefishingshow Excellent! Thanks for the info! One other question, I am trying to decide on a new reel, and I was using the KastKing Rekon's, which work well but have the same problem your salis x reel did. On the hookset, they peel drag, and don't seem to have a solid hookset. How do you like your Shimano tekota for a solid initial hookset? It looks like it performs better.

First of all, EXCELLENT video. I've never been gar fishing but live in Houston. Will gar not bite a bait with a wire leader? Seriously, I have no idea.
@wildlifefishingshow
Жыл бұрын
They definitely will bite a wire leader but there's always a small risk of losing the hook or a break off (which happened in this video). A kevlar braided leader isn't going to be as bad in the fish's mouth as it clears the hook over time.
I noticed the spots near the tail. How does that gar differ from the spotted gar I see here in Florida Ponds
Get well soon. Nice video as always. Since braid is so vulnerable to abrasion, why not use a high strength wire leader?
@wildlifefishingshow

I'm trying to use a thick 500lb kevlar braid instead of wire, I think it's better for the fish

When the fish is running, at what point, or what action signifies to you that it is time to set the hook? Your videos are so rad!
@wildlifefishingshow
Жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, there's a pause in their movement after they run for a moment, and that's the fish readjusting the bait further into its mouth. I wait for that and let the fish pick up just a bit of speed as it moves off again and that's when I set the hook.

13:47 - is that blood in the water? If so what caused the gar to bleed? Great catch!

A fish that size, how long will it usually go in between getting breaths? Hope your knee doesn't give you grief,more than it already is.thanks dude!!
@wildlifefishingshow
Жыл бұрын
They take breaths as an extra means of gaining oxygen, so it can can be a while
I didn't see where it was coming from, but it seemed to be bleeding quite a bit. I saw a bloody spot in the mud where you landed it and once you put it back in the water it was bleeding pretty good. Did you notice if it was injured on a rock or something? I'm just curious since I wasn't able to see. I know it will survive just fine.
@wildlifefishingshow
Жыл бұрын
No, just a bit of blood from the hook set. Sometimes when you're unhooking them out of water, the blood will pool in that pouch and the first chance it gets to leave is when the fish gets back in the water, so it looks like more than it is.
Yes it does feel bad losing a big one

Really dude,what does taking a carp for bait,have anything to do with respecting carp,I respect whitetail deer ,but if I shoot one during deer season does not make me disrespect deer.
@wildlifefishingshow
Жыл бұрын
I do respect carp. I'll also occasionally use smaller ones for bait. They're an introduced species over here and are incredibly well populated. If I catch one that I suspect to be anything more than a couple of years old, I wouldn't dare kill it. But the smaller ones are one of the alligator gar's favorite prey items. I'm just facilitating what is normally a natural process.
