Dogs 101 - LEONBERGER - Top Dog Facts About the LEONBERGER
Check out More at BrooklynsCorner.com
Created as a pet for European royalty, the origin of the Leonberger is quite uncertain. There are many theories and one of them affirms that it comes from Germany and was created by Heinrich Essig, thanks to the crossing between the Dogo of the Tibet, the San Bernardo, the Newfoundlands and other work breeds. During the First World War, the race almost died, but the devotion of its greatest fans rescue him until, in 1991, the United Kennel Club recognized him. However, whatever their origins, the truth is that the breed has been used as a lifeguard, pet and as a rescue dog in mountainous areas.
Time for some Ruff Trivia:
- Despite their size, the Leonbergers don’t have many puppies, but in 2009 a dog named Ariel broke the record by having the largest litter of the breed in the United States. Can you guess how many puppies were?
o A: 30
o B: 10
o C: 18
What do you think? give it your best guess in the comments below before we get to the answer! Hang on tight and we’ll get back to this Ruff Trivia Question toward the end of the video.
Corpulent, big and proportionate, the Leonberger is also known for its aristocratic grace and elegance. They can measure between 28 to 31.5 inches and weigh 120 to 170 pounds. This race has a solid back and muscular extremities. His head is narrow, deeper than wide, and his dark eyes have a kindly expression. Also, it has two layers of hair, a semi-soft exterior, dense and very long and an interior, short and close to the foot, with different colors such as lion yellow, red, reddish brown and sand.
Grooming: An important fact about this breed, is the need to comb them at least three times a week, so if you are a lover of big and hairy dogs and you like to share a lot of time with them, this is the best option for you. Also, the cutting of the nails and cleaning of the teeth and ears should be done every two weeks.
Temperament: Sweetness is the word that describes better this huge dog. The giant Leonberger doesn’t like loneliness, but he loves family life and children. He’s a quiet dog, intelligent, sure of himself, faithful, kind and docile. Also, they easily adapt to different circumstances, including sharing with other dogs and pets.
Training: If you like to do exercises, this is the pet for you. The Leonbergers tend to be very lazy, so their owner must help him with their exercise, such as biking, walking or running. Leo's high energy levels and intelligence make him a super competitor in agility and obedience tests, so his training should start since he’s a puppy.
Health: Big dogs often suffer from hip dysplasia and stomach torsion, and the Leonberger is no exception. For this reason, the key to preventing this situation and give a happy and healthy life to your pet is to exercise him, feeding him properly and take him regularly to your trusted veterinarian.
The Leonberger breed is known for how docile they are. They need a lot of interaction with people, other dogs and pets. Also, they’re able to perform sports activities such as hiking, backpacking, sledding, karting and swimming practicing. In general, this breed is ideal for a very active and responsible person.

I've wanted a Leoberger all my life, and last christmass I've finally got one! He is the cutest, sweetest and most lovely pet I have ever had, and I had/have a lot! He is great with all my other pets!(All kinds of creatures, cats, dogs, chickens, lizzards etc) He is great with all my little nieces and nephews, and since we live at a childrens playground he is playing with all the children from the neighbourhood! This breed really needs to be with his family, you cant just leave him alone in the house for a long while, he needs to be with his pack! If you love you're garden, don't get one! -_- Mine is digging a hole to china right now I think and you can't really blame him, it's in their nature.. Don't punish them to much, they are SOOOO sensitive to stress and anger, its like having an autisctic child.. But for real, this is such a great breed! They are so lovely and sweet and loyal, but yeah, they do come with some 'flaws' like the hair, them destroying your garden, the attention they really do require.. And of course they really don't get that old.. this is a breed that rarely comes to about 8 years old, though there are some examples from Leos getting to 10-12.. Read about them, get informed and train them from a very early age! If you do that, these are the most lovely and sweet creatures you'll ever meet!

I love big dogs.We use to have Berner Mountain Dog, and all you wrote for Leonberger is similar by Berners. Our Astra was 12 years and 8 months when she passed away in December 2020. I was never angry or mad with her (she was angel on 4 paws) In my oppinion Leonbergers, Berners and Newfoundlanders have something in common -beautiful gentle giants.🐾💜

Last year in maybe around September or october. Me and my family were leaving a parking lot. We were then turning left the we saw a little white matted dog with long hair running on the side walk. So we made our dad stop the car, then me, my mom, and my brother went out and followed it. We assumed he was very smart cuz he wouldn’t cross the street or anything. So we kept following him. At one point he stoped and barked at us, then he went on his way again. But then he went into a neighborhood. He went to a front of a house that surprisingly had the same breed as him. So then they started barking at each other, then the owner lady came out. We asked if it was her dog, then she said no. We were then able to corner him in some plants, then my mom picked him up. We then walked all the way back to the car. We took him home then we still had a little cage thing that we had for our little bald chihuahua, but it sadly past away about 6 years ago I’m guessing. We then put him in the little area then we washed him. We went to the store to get him stuff. We were at the store then my dad texts me saying that he jumped out of the area and went next to his bed. I told my mom and we just started laughing and told my dad to put him back in and stay with him. We got home and I took a bath. Then I come out with a towel in my hair then he just starts barking at me. So I get scared then my moms says he doesn’t recognize me. Then a week has past by and my mom has already gotten him groomed and saw if he had a microchip. He didn’t. So my mom posted on Facebook a before and after photo of him on a certain page. Then my moms friend started sharing it. I told my mom I wanted to keep him. She said she’ll give it a week and if nobody claims him we’ll keep him. So I got excited. But then I told her what happens if they fake it. Then she said she wants photo proof and their name to see if they respond back. So another week went by and we named him Rocket. And now as I type this.... he is now sleeping next to my bed right now. He is truly a special dog. He is our protector, and family member. Although, it’s hard for him to make new dog friends. I have a German Shepard named Sherlock. They kinda get along if that’s a word... He isn’t really a guard dog because he has ADHD and because he it so sweet! Rocket acts like a cat almost! He lays on his back, feet laid out, and more! Who would’ve known there was a dog like him! 5:35
