My baby…the love of my life…who still has my heart 17 years after his passing…was in a cage trying to get my attention in a pet store in Arlington TX. As I walked away, my friend said, “He’s looking to see where you are going.” I asked to hold him, and the pet store employee told me, “A family brought him back. They say he doesn’t like people.” I remember thinking, “Well he seems to like ME.” He came home with me, and quickly became the love of my life. He was three months old when he chose me, and he passed in my arms at 16 and a half. Our bond was magical.

My dog has been returned many times before I adopted him. The shelter wasn't seeking a family anymore when I got him. All of this happened just because he was shy and very scared of people, instead of being extrovert and cuddly. Now he's the most adorable and loving creature in the world 🥰

The darn cheek that the shelter wasn't seeking a family anymore. What then? Would he just have stayed there in isolation? Then at that point a decision should have been made to rather set his spirit free and have him to sleep. We are all pro life as far as possible, but what was more cruel???

There's a reason when we say "you don't pick the dog, the dog picks you" and is so true. I have a little dog that fostered her during her pregnancy, the puppies were adopted, and somebody took her (the mom) for adoption, in less than a month she escaped from that house and came back to me. After that, I couldn't let her go with another human, and now she's with me.

Their job is to rehabilitate animals because it takes a lot of time and effort and bring them to a new home no matter how gut-wrenching it is but they fell in love and said screw it.

have a similar story. i grew up with dogs my whole life. when i moved out on my own i lived in apartments for several years and when i bought my first house, i wanted a dog. I waited 6 months after and adopted a shelter dog. i brought her home and she just could not adjust to being in a home. she only knew the shelter the first 6 months of her life. i took her back to the shelter and asked if she had been abused because she was literally afraid of everything. it was the worst feeling of my entire life leaving her there until i had to go back and give her a second chance. like it was god telling me i had to go back and try again. aside from getting married and having a son, bringing my future best friend back into my home was the best decision of my life. 11 years later and she is literally the best friend i ever had. god bless you if you took the time to read this and hope it inspires you to always be kind to animals and let them into your lives if you have the means.

You are absolutely right. Ive fostered many, many dogs. When speaking with a potential adopter, I am as honest as possible about the dog, their quirks, strengths, things they need to work on etc. I want to make sure the adopter and the dog fit well with each other. For instance, a dog like Chips would only go to a quiet household with people who are experienced working with fearful dogs and with reward based training backgrounds. No younger kids, no busy lifestyle with people coming and going constantly and any other pets (sometimes another pet is the perfect thing to bring a fearful dog out of their shell) would have to be well matched personality wise. Even then, sometimes I see people get starry eyed over a potential dog regardless of how well that dog would fit in their life, or they havent really any thought into the 10-15 year commitment of time, resources, and emotion owning a dog requires.

I so agree with your statement. Also, some people don't know the first thing about dogs & they go and adopt or worse purchase a dog for the status they can provide. However. They don't exercise, socialize or play with the dog or even clean up after the dog. Then they complain about the dog misbehaving when in fact, it is they who are failures for not providing the care that a dog needs.

No matter how many months of sleepless nights and carpet that looks like swiss cheese, we are so grateful for them. I raised many dogs from puppies but adopted Layla at a year and a half. Based on the paperwork this is her first real home. She had an intestinal parasite when I got her so after a week, I left her at the vet for some tests. She must have thought she'd been rejected again, after all the back room is full of kennels. She was very excited when I picked her up, but what really got to me was when we were home, she ran outside through the dog door, which I assumed meant she needed to pee. Instead, I watched her sprint to the end of the dog run and back in without stopping. The happiness in her eyes and overall excitement showed me how much it meant to her to finally have a home.

I've seen people have kids to fill some need or emotional hole for themselves and act like they are just excited to get some live doll to play with or something. Seriously do not have kids or pets if you are that selfish people! They both require a lot of work and patience and need to be respected as individual beings with their own emotions and needs.

So, the dogs can only survive depending on human charity. They beg the humans for food and all other essentials for surviving, because they could not survive without the human help. 2. About "mentally retarded". The dog species came from ancient wolves after downgrade. The today dog brain is 30% smaller than today wolf's. That's an average among all dog species. Even a 6 month old wolf puppy easily outsmarts any adult dog on this planet. So, dogs are mentally rearded compared to their ancestors. Many people get a dog when what they need is a house plant . Water it give it a little light and you can feel accomplished. An animal is not like that. They need you as much as you need them. Food, understanding, time, scratches on the belly and petting on the ears. Snuggles on the couch. If you're the type that thinks dogs or cats belong in one space of the house or outside, not on the furniture or you don't have the time to put into a pet . Nope! Sorry but if all one is willing to put in to a rescued pet is 2 days then they cop out then that tells me they are not legit pet people because even a dog raised from a new born pup is 11 to 15+ years of your time and effort. I have 3 dogs and all are rescued dogs when they were less than a year old. 1 is originally mine and the other two dogs I inherited by way of my brother's passing and my Mother's passing. I am single and hold a steady job from moving till evening and take all 3 dogs a good walk 4 to 6 days a week depending if the weather is good. I alone pay all their vet bills. It's a lot of work but I would never give them up because saying oh they are too much work. So from my point of view from a single Man with 3 dogs, if you're not willing to commit to a pet, then don't even consider it. Too many of my fellow Americans have become too darn selfish and physically lazy to put work in o a pet.

the best feeling is seeing how far they come when they start out like this. Our little girl was so scared, hid in the corner, wouldn't walk on our floor for months... we just gave her time and space. Even tho lots of things still scare her, we have just learned how to pivot and adjust. But she's just so full of love when she's at home where she is the most comfortable. People want this Instagramable dog and that just doesn't happen with adoption all the time. I am glad this dog ended up with people who cared enough to give Chips time and patience.

I got a german shepherd when he was about 1 year old that had never been well socialized and he was that scared, always hiding or looking for a hiding place. I figured out that if I laid down flat on the floor, he would come over and let me talk to him and pet him. Soon he slept in the bed with me resting his enormous head on my chest, and loved spooning with me and my other gsd. He was the sweetest dog ever. I miss him so much.

And he's still with us, five years later, because WE TOOK THE FUCKING TIME with him. our pup is a scotch collie. she was abandoned in tx because they thought they were going to breed a ''lassie collie''. we got her 5 yrs. ago in colo. afraid of everything. skateboards. roofer, trash cans dragged to the curb, you name it. we just sat with her thru it all and said''we are in this with you. she loves everyone now, 5 years on. could not imagine life w/o our happy, all be it, velcro dog.

Yes! They could have chosen to put her through another adoption, making sure they would give her enough time to trust and relax, but why do that since her trust issues were so severe and she is with the family she is comfortable with. They made the right decision.

I have a Chips Ahoy and she is slowly coming out her shell. She's wonderful and has this sweet wonderful gentle personality. She's still a trash hound but now when I catch she just looks at instead of running away in fear. It's fun to watch her decide if she's going to get in the trash or not. All I have to do is say her name and she walks away. These Chips Ahoys are not too much work; they are so worth the wait! My Chips Ahoy loves the cats and sleeps with them in the same bed. She makes me smile so often.

Isn't it wonderful seeing them come out of their shell and learn to love and trust again? It's amazing what patience, love and understanding can do. The damage/trauma didn't happen in one day...they likely endured it for a while. The healing isn't going to happen in one day either. Bless you for being patient and understanding with your Chips Ahoy and giving her unconditional love and a happy home. Stories like this give me hope for humanity. 💕

Some people like to think of themselves as animal lovers, but often that's only if the animal is attractive looking, a popular breed and easy to care for and young. When the animal is maybe not so cute, or has some issues, or is older...that's when the REAL animal lovers show up. Thank God for people like that!

As someone who's volunteered at a shelter for years, this is so true. We stopped putting the "desirable" animals (small, preferably young with no issues) on the website because they usually get adopted the same day anyway. It was causing issues with people getting angry when they came for the one puppy on the site only to find out he'd been adopted in under an hour. They'd walk out with nothing, won't even consider the others who had been there weeks or even months. Not because the long stays had any problems, but because 90% of the people are fighting (sometimes literally!) over 10% of the animals. Nobody cares about the rest 😢

New dogs take time! Our amazing rescue girl was sooo nervous, and followed me EVERYWHERE for days. I felt like I had a newborn baby. One day I just lay on the couch with her ALL DAY LONG. Wrapped in blankies. Like 16 hours. I watched movies, ordered all our Christmas gifts, and did email. She looked into my eyes the entire time. I spent a few more days like that with her, mostly on the couch. Being very still and giving her rubs when she would accept them. FINALLY she relaxed. She's been a fantastic dog for 5 years now, just the best little girl. They need time and devotion and a calm person to learn to rely on! Yaaye for Chips!!!
