That one caught me off guard & got me. Especially as for over half my life people used to just dump unwanted dogs on the dirt road near my house. We would take them in & either find them new homes or they ended up staying with us for life. Thankfully people finally stopped dumping animals here. But my 3 current dogs are all rescues who showed up near my friends’ homes as puppies. Some people are horrible but thankfully for these pups they were dumped near kindhearted caring people. Now they are spoiled rotten…my foot is going numb from my 65 pound Shepard mix laying over my leg but he looks so content I don’t want to move. 😂

I currently have a rescue too. We don't know what she went trough, but she fears people she doesn't know. When I walk her, I have to remind everybody to take her growlings very seriously (as she's not bigger than a Yorkshire, people find the growling funny) - yes, she bited me a couple time when she panicked, and the first time one tooth went very deep in my hand (we knew she had a terrible behaviour when we rescued her - she was growling at us all the time - but we inew that very few people would want to afopt her, so we gave her a family). Now, at home, she's just like "I'm just happy to be here" means "I fucking love this bed/couch/watever. If you try to make me go out, I'll chope off your fingers". It's been 8 years we adopted her. No regrets.

The thing is when I get my own pets I want to rescue, but I want two specific breed (Husky and Shiba) and I’ll need them as babies because I also want to have so they’ll get along. But maybe I’ll be lucky and find a baby Husky at a shelter but for now idk

@TheSlipknotWeeb Huskies get abandoned fairly often, really. Most people are not ready to have one so make sure you are. Please don't adopt because they're cute memedogs, they're a special breed and need a lot of care and training to not be ballistic fur missile terrors. Not to be mean, but a shelter Shiba is likely crazy as hell but even regular Shibas are sort of nuts. I honestly can't imagine Shiba and Husky being a safe pairing because even if they like each other, you're in for trouble. Good luck either way.

  • @TheSlipknotWeeb

@@Merble Yea, I’m aware they can be pains. I think I’m ready for their stubbornness being I’ve been around cats all my life 😅. Also I’ve learned that sometimes with how a dog’s raised and trained plus socialized from when they’re pups plays a role in how they are. Also, I feel like especially Shibas would be right for me being how they’re so cat like with me being around cats all my life. So I’m prepared for their, territorial, stubborn, hate everything attitude. And even then if I raise them properly that will be a little less of a problem. I’ve learned that the reason why small dogs are often nuts is that people find the barking, growling, and overall having a hatred for everything “cute” so they don’t have them trained or socialized properly at all. (Did I make myself look dumb with this?)

I have a rescued GSD hurricane Harvey survivor. Or I did until I became homeless but she went to one of my best friends. No way in hell was she going through that. I see her monthly I’m a disabled veteran and she is the best part of my life. This pup had two broken legs and a rejected titanium plate in one. Yet even before we got her legs fixed she was just the happiest dog. She’s the reason I’m working so hard on my recovery.

@@ornerydyke that’s not always the case. There are shelters that euthanize i adoptable dogs. Also the term rescue doesn’t just include life or death. The German Shepherd is so spot on it hurts. Mine takes her "job" very seriously. She sleeps by the door every night. Even if you lay her down in another room or tell her to go somewhere else and sleep, she'll do it for probably a minute after lights out, then you will hear paws clacking on the floor as she returns to her post. The house is her fortress and her bark is her sworn oath 😆

@@ithewho6603 Yes as a further vet nurse, chihuahuas were terrifying as their threshold was so low, and near zero chance of finding a muzzle that fitted. Never fun to be dealing with a land-shark in crisis, or that thinks they're in crisis; stress never makes emergencies go well. Just occasionally I would meet a confident, self-assured, easy going chihuahua and be surprised enough to question it's heritage; rather than questioning my assumptions. Turns out most were coming from one breeder who carefully socialised and handled their pups from birth. I think a huge amount of chihuahua fear response is due to their first few weeks of life being so small and fragile, rather than owners. However some owners can manage to turn around a difficult "childhood"

Hadn't really planned on adopting a second dog at the time, but glad we got four years with both good girls and another ten with the little one that I was afraid wouldn't settle down with anyone but me. Between the Golden that loved people and chased cats and Sig, who was scared of most people unless they had food and Momma liked them but vibed well with the neighborhood strays, it was definitely an odd couple pair of dogs.

@@101jir My brainless Lab was play bowing and jumping about in front of two coyotes, while they were getting on either side of him and when he turned the one behind would try to go for the hamstrings. I thought they'd kill him. He made it OK. I don't think he had any idea they didn't want to play with him. He maybe wasn't the brightest, but he was a sweet boy. He loved to run, fetch, and cuddle. But mostly he just loved to run.

The Great Dane and Chihuahua are both so true (we have lived with both, just not at the same time 😊) but the 9 Labradors my husband trained, hunted and/or competed with (all lived in the house but, again, not all at the same time) were very intelligent. Okay, 8 of the 9 were, but Apollo was calendar model handsome and a 100-pound lap puppy, so it didn't matter. 😁

As a general rule (clearly Apollo was an exception) labs are as intelligent as their trainer's expectations. My dad had a lab who was smart enough to recognize (and laugh at him) when he made a mistake; she had a brother who was a perfect example of a space cadet. He was barely house trained, never anything challenging. That made all the difference. My mother's favorite "laughing at him" story was when he told her (the dog) to get his red slippers. She went all over the house and came back with his blue ones, looking sheepish. He repeated, somewhat forcefully, that he wanted the RED slippers. This brought my mother into the room, where she reminded him that he'd left his red slippers at his mother's house. Queenie went from sheepish (paws stretched in front of her, muzzle on them as if bowing) to LOLOLOL (sitting up, dancing in place and "laughing"). She knew what mom had said. Dad's turn to look sheepish.
