Does Your Dark Chocolate have Lead & Cadmium?

Does your dark chocolate have lead and cadmium in it? Many of us watch what we eat and enjoy dark chocolate as a healthy treat. Yet Consumer Reports has done testing to reveal that lead and cadmium (toxic heavy metals) are present in nearly every chocolate brand, with the most in dark chocolate. But isn't dark chocolate good for us? Does dark chocolate have a dark side?
Tune into this program excerpt as registered dietitian nutritionist Zonya Foco explains these findings to her Eat REAL for Your Health Weight Loss Intensive "insiders" and shares what we should do about it, which brands are best, and how our "new habits" around eating dark chocolate, cocoa powder and chocolate chips must and can change, so you can enjoy dark chocolate safely. Whoa! I recently bought a bunch of Green & Black organic dark chocolate bars. It was recommended for a treat now and then while sugar detoxing. So upsetting! Thanks for sharing this info. BTW, our dentist has us using a Waterpik daily. The last time I went in for a dental checkup, the hygienist thanked me for making her job so easy, lol.

I cut all chocolate out in December 2023. I've been following these mostly from consumer reports. I have been advocating for people I know to boycott chocolate. We have to hurt them to get change and the bottom line is where it hurts'em.

It doesn't seem to be the cocoa growers fault with lead and cadmium. Lead contamination of candies has been recognized as a problem since 1820. There's more than one way in which these metals find their way into cacao. Lead is a post-harvest byproduct. Cacao beans left to dry in the sun become magnets for dust and dirt that can contain particles of lead and other harmful elements.Feb 21, 2024

Thanks for sharing! It's so refreshing to find another nutritionist that digs in and does research. Years ago I worked with a nutritionist who would call product manufacturers to see how they made their products before he recommends them to people. I learned so much! For example olive from the US is very toxic because of the way it's made here. It's fine if it's from Italy. I recently saw a study from UC Davis showing how they tested several olive and avocado oils and over 82% of them are rancid. I also learned that grapeseed oil is the most nutritious so I use that all the time. Thanks again for your dedication and sharing!

I heard this a few weeks ago, and I am shocked. I love chocolate and put two tablespoons of cacao in my smoothie every morning. ( I don't anymore) It helped get all the greens down in my smoothie. I fear eating it now. I can't wrap my head around the idea that a little lead is okay. Thank you for posting this and giving better options.

But I have a very very important question for you if you don’t mind: So I’m in my 60’s & diabetic type 2 with paresthesia neuropathy. My Endocrinologist disolved my thyroid due to Graves’ disease many yrs ago. I want to eat salad with lots of veggies but heard scary negative things about oxalates. Can you please tell me if I should or not consume them. Thanks & blessing ✨. P. S. I appreciate anybody who want to give their opinion 🐶

Here's the detail in the studies... Lead and cadmium both occur naturally in the earth’s crust, and cadmium, in particular, exists in soil. Humans have made things much worse, however, through activities like mining, manufacturing, transportation, and agriculture. Modern-day levels of these metals have not only been increasing in soil but also in water and air. As cacao trees grow, they absorb soil nutrients through their roots. And they also absorb cadmium, which accumulates in the tree as it grows. Not all cacao-producing regions are equal in soil cadmium, which explains why some of the chocolates had very little cadmium while others were much higher. Lead, on the other hand, hardly gets into the tree’s tissues at all. Researchers have found almost no lead in the interior of cacao beans while they’re still on the tree. Instead, the lead accumulated on the outer shell. What’s more, lead levels were low soon after beans were picked and removed from pods, but increased as beans dried in the sun for days, as lead-contaminated dust and dirt settled on the beans. During fermentation, the sticky pulp from the bean can also attract particles of lead from the environment, which are transferred to the nibs during sorting and processing and end up in the final chocolate product. Where’s all this lead coming from? Researchers tested high-lead beans from Nigeria and discovered that the lead isotopes implicated fumes and particulates from leaded gasoline. Subsequent investigation found that the harvested beans were typically dried next to the road, to make transport easier and more efficient. @@PastorCheryl
