Does Your CPU Even Matter Anymore?? - Building an NVENC Streaming PC

If you're building a streaming PC and want to use NVIDIA's new NVENC, how much CPU power do you really need? So we grabbed AMD's 3200G, 3600, and 3700X to see how much of the CPU we were actually using when paired with one of these new GPUs.

I personally love having a dual PC setup. Being able to troubleshoot problems on a gaming PC while live and do reboots saves me from splitting up streams, losing out on hosts, viewer #'s from previous hosts, etc. etc. I don't have to alt tab to make small and quick changes, my macro boards are dedicated to the streaming PC and don't interfere with my gaming PC commands, etc. etc. Does it over complicate audio? Yup. Extra heat and cost? Yup. But those couple key points i mentioned heavily outweigh everything else, at least in my situation.

I was streaming with new NVENC codec and it's not even close to be good as Medium / Slow CPU preset in OBS. :( NVENC codec can't handle fast-paced game image - it looks so blurry. If you play Sims , Minecraft or World of Warcraft then it's not a big deal.

  • @C0d0ps

NVENC and NVENC (new) are nothing like each other. NVENC uses your gpu to stream without a dedicated stream encoder aka gpus before 1650 super and the quality is around x264 very fast I would guess. NVENC (new) is an option for gpus like 1650 super and newer which means the quality is closer to x264 medium (again I'm guessing but this would be easy to look up). The new nvenc uses a dedicated streaming encoder aka not being used by games or anything else so it's a lot harder to overload this

This a real nice video demonstrating this, however, how well does the 3600 or even 3200G handle when in comes to streaming VR content to a headset? I'm currently running a 2600X on a B450-F Gaming, coupled with a 2080Super. I use Virtual Desktop to stream Oculus and Steam Games to my Oculus Quest over 5GHz WiFi. I gotta say that I'm very surprised with the quality, and between plugging in via Oculus Link and streaming over wifi, there's not that much different. I do get around 20ms latency though which is very noticeable in games like Beat Saber, but that is to be expected. My question is, will upgrading my CPU (to a 3900X), will this improve any issues with latency I have? Or is this purely network latency?

What you think about using AMD Ryzen 5 2600 + AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT 8GB(later addon) + 16BG ram both for streaming and gaming as single box? I did a small benchmark and while I generally run 80-90FPS for some reason I drop to around 60FPS seemingly at random. When FPS drops it also drops few frames, before jumping back to 80FPS. Doesn't seem to link to high CPU/GPU usage. Not sure what could be causing it. My PC isn't designed for streaming in mind. I do some youtube stuff + some game element rendering but was thinking to try streaming just for fun.

Great video! But I haven’t seen one I didn’t like. I laughed when you mentioned the 1660 and Ryzen 5 2600. I ordered my parts a few days ago and already have 2600 in hand. I went with the 1660 Super because of the DDR6 RAM which may or may not help with the encode. The neat part is this rig will pull double service. It will function as a gaming rig for my awesome wife when not streaming and work horse encoder when I am streaming. Very excited to stress test this configuration! Thank you very much for all the knowledge, support and good vibes that you provide to the community!!

What about using the 4k60 pro mk.2 from Elgato as your capture card and using the feature(s) that allow you to record at native 1440p (for example) while streaming 1080p or 720p? I'm about to buy one of those capture cards (Friday when it drops down to $200 btw) but the vague system requirements section on the product page recommends a 6th gen Core i7 or better - thoughts? Is that really needed? Can we get away with a 3rd gen Ryzen series 5 and a GTX 1660?

Hey Harris, nice video but I was wondering if you could answer or make a video based on a question I am researching right now which could benefit a lot of budget streamers: how good will the performance be of a Ryzen 2400g/3400g as a dedicated streaming pc because these processors do not require a dedicated graphics card. Specially on a mini itx motherboard on a mini itx case. Not only would I save a TON of desk space I would also be able to save money by not spending on a graphics card and since mini itx motherboards have spot for only one pcie card I can use a pcie capture card like the elgato hd 60 pro. I think this could make dual pc setup streaming viable for budget streamers. And when not streaming from this pc the capture card can be swapped out for a graphics card making the tiny streaming pc a portable gaming machine. How it actually performs real world is something that very few people have touched so would be great if you did. Thanks.

@@astweiss Not an old PC, but I still have a 4790k so it depends on who you ask. Go for a CPU upgrade. The newer Ryzen chips have better single-threaded performance and if your motherboard supports Ryzen 5000 that would be a huge step up even if you still have the same number of cores. If you can't do Ryzen 5000, the 3000 chips are going to be cheap soon second-hand as others upgrade. "Lagging Issues" isn't very descriptive. If you're dropping frames try to change either the render settings or the game settings so that the CPU isn't hit as hard (V-Sync or a framerate limiter to limit frames to 60, increasing graphics settings while decreasing physics settings like ragdolls). If you just care about the streaming then running above 60 would be unnecessarily harder on your PC. You could also be dropping frames if your upload connection is unsteady or too slow for the bitrate, but that's less likely. If this is the problem then making sure you have a good internet connection (Wired instead of WiFi) would be the simplest fix. If your frames are dropping below 60 then that's not a hardware problem just a resource management problem. The game settings are set to high or your streaming settings are set too aggressive. Most of the time this is a GPU problem with the solution being to turn down the graphics settings (shadows are a big one). You could also check to see if your GPU utilization is at 100% (Don't use task manager for this, use something else like MSI Afterburner). If your GPU is not at 100% when playing a game then the CPU is holding you back and an easy solution is to just make the encode settings faster.

On your streaming pc , if you're running a dual pc stream. Chrome will never be opened cause chrome will easily take 80% of the cpu cause of it's guidlines. Discord will mainly be used for your main pc as you already know i guess. Spotify takes little to no percentage. So i'd say the only scary things are the animated overlays or any animated alerts.

depends on your cpu or gpu. If your gpu is gtx 16-series and higher, you can use gpu to encode, else if your cpu has 8 cores, encode with cpu.

Hey Harris some further insight. I have a really high end PC, 2080ti and an i9 (I know over kill for streaming) but I game and stream on it at the same time with settings maxed out for most games and while streaming recording and gaming at the same time, my CPU never goes above 18% honestly this only proves at least for a while that dont need a 2nd PC for streaming. PS. to furher this olive branch on why I have a PC like this is because im learning animation with Blender in my spare time.

I can stream/record with a super old CPU. I am using a Intel Core2 Quad Q8400, overclocked. And a rtx 3060, with 6gb ddr2. And it can keep up. I am using the GPU to encode. The CPU does struggle with OBS open, and gaming at the same time. But it does work.
