Does Your Army MOS Affect How Fast You Get Promoted?!?

Promotions in the Army can seem complicated. If you want to make the military a career and you want to get promoted quickly, ensure you have a high APFT, do your best at everything, do boards, go to schools, and do things to separate yourself from other soldiers. The higher you go the more competitive the promotions are.

This is a pretty complex topic for sure. Ultimately, it’s up to the solider to be motivated enough to get those points, but different locations, units, assignments, chain of commands, mission requirements, etc all play a role in wether you get certain points or not. Even if you are in a low density MOS you can struggle to get points because of elements out of your control. Control what you can (range, apft, distance learning, college, etc.) and the rest will follow in time if you’re patient and motivated. I wouldn’t avoid an MOS that you will be happy in just to get an “easier” promotion point scale.

Trenton Miller kind of. You can enter the army as a Specialist (E4) which skips E1-E3 if you have a degree, and there are a handful of special units/assignments where you can come out of basic training as an NCO (E5/E6) like the special Army bands. You would have to bring some serious credentials to earn that though. There are also reclassifications that you can do after you’ve been in for a few years that can allow you to automatically pick up E5 or E6 depending on your current rank. Precision MOS reclassifications for MOSs that are hurting in numbers. Bottom line is, the Army has time in service and time in rank requirements that you will need to meet before getting promoted 98% of the time.

Great video and helpful link. Me and my cousin are enlisting as we always wanted to. Don’t really care for promotions, pay grade or college/benefits of the career. I always wanted to enlist and serve as part of the military. Due to me being a fat ass I choose to be 12 Bravo while my cousin is still undecided. Went to MEPS for the confirmation test and just gotta wait for the lockdown/delay to be lifted to go do the fitness test. The link was very helpful for her as my cousin wants to build a career out of the army and maybe sighs on for a decade or two. Stay healthy every one

Trying to get back into the Army. Got out as an E-5. Let me say I had the most responsibility than all our new E-5's in my company. I even had to take on our E-7 position when he was on leave. I guess my First Sergeant and Commander trusted me more. SO yeah when it comes to promotion to an E-5, you're right that its the Company that can determine if they want to promote you to an E-5 position, if there are slots available for your MOS. But I figured to go back in and tackle new challenges. Trying to go back and go into WOCS. Should of done it sooner now that I'm in my mid 30's. I have to say you have a lot of experience and insights and I'm glad you made these videos. Hopefully your videos will help new future recruits.

From my observation it always seemed by "how much Uncle Sam needs you." Example, I went from E1 to E4 in year and half as 19D. That was during the time of OIF/OEF, where front line combat MOSes was in high demand. I went to nowhere when I reclassed to 68W since there was too many 68Ws and barely any NCOs leaving the Army.

When I was on active duty, the promotion point ceiling was 1,000 points. 200 were the commander's evaluation. Of course, times change. I was in Finance, so the cut-off score was usually 998. What he's saying is true. It all comes down to supply & demand, what the army requires for each specialty (MOS). Choose wisely because you may not be able to change to another.

It's been so many years, but there was someone working a medical job, a Captain who was prior enlisted. She'd been a Lieutenant and then a Captain for quite a bit of years. She explained that it takes a LONG time for people in her job to be promoted and that it'd be a couple more years before she'd even be allowed to test for Major. I want to say she was a nurse, but I wont swear to that. All I remember is she played a big role in helping sick and injured basic trainees.

Yes, the MOS and type of Unit you are in affect how fast or how far you can go in rank. When I was in Maintenance, 45L Artillery Mechanic and 45K Tank Turret Mechanic upward rank mobility was OK. When I was an 88M I was promoted from E-5 to E-6 and had a path to move up if I would have stayed 88M. I transferred to the Band and that was total rank gridlock. Old guys hang on to their positions forever. I joined as an E-6 and could not move up so I retired at age 50 with 22 years in the Army National Gaurd. If I would have stayed in as an 88M I would have had a real chance to reach E-7. My time in the band was interesting and I was called on to drive the Units LMTV and teach others how to operate it. I also was in charge of the Unit Weapons Vault. I was also one the few Soldiers int he Unit with Combat Patches. It was tough trying to keep up musically with other musicians who had Masters Degrees in instrumental performance. There were also several Band Teachers and with that several SJWs who were annoying.

I also believe it is 1 up and 1 down when it comes to slots, For example if a unit has a slot open for a E-5 supply sergeant then I believe a E-4 can take the slot and be promoted and hold the slot as E-6, but once he hits E-7 then he will get transferred

It's very important to pick a mos That has a civilian counterpart as to be able to get decent work. Also pick something That you like doing, because you will be doing it a long time and if it's not something you like it becomes slavery .ofcourse ,at 17 or 18 ,it's very difficult to know what you want to do in your life .But do not let a recruiter just give you a job based on the needs of the military, it's usually what nobody else wants to do .A good part of enjoying the military is doing something you love to to do

Many years ago, I was a 98J20/30 in the old ASA. There weren't too many of us even in the Agency, so promotion was pretty quick, if you kept your nose clean, mouth shut, and did the job well. I made SP5/E5 in 21 months from my date of enlistment. Not bad at all. I also worked with the USAF Security Service in Berlin, and zoomies with the same job I had were mostly E-3s with the same time in service as me. I really felt sorry for them. Oh well, the luck of the draw, I guess.

Used to be a lot better, then they started commissioning us at CW3. We used to wear Warrant Officer Corps brass (as on my uniform) and brown trim for WO. Now, wear Branch Brass (MI for me) and Branch Color (Oriental Blue for MI). We had distinctive headgear, now we wear company grade hat for W1-CW2 and Field Grade Hat for CW3 and above

Could you make a video about how MOS' s are labeled? More specifically why it gets labeled a certain number and letter (12Y, 36W, etc.)

From my knowledge it literally means nothing.. it could but i don’t think there is much meaning behind it. It’s the same reason an apple is called an apple. It’s because somebody names it that. Haha

The number is the general field of specialty and the letter is your specialty within that area My MOS is 35P 35= Military Intelligence P = Voice Intercept Operator a 35N is a SIGINT analyst, etc.

So, I wonder. If your time to get promoted runs out, is there another option besides getting "kicked out" if you don't make the cut for promotion? Like an option to get demoted for example? Unless that's what you were referring to as getting kicked out - as in out of your rank, not out of the army entirely.

From British Royal Air Force. What is an MOS? I might be going out to visit you guys if I get lucky and get flown to hms queen Elizabeth so been watching 2Lt Wards videos. Interesting stuff, Flt Lt Walsh (Ps Flt Lt is equivelant to captain as our ranks our slightly different to yours in officers and very different for enlisted!)

Can you find out if it's easy to promote on an MOS by looking at in and out calls? If In is Y for SGT SSG SFC does it mean that you have good chances to promote?

Can't get promoted if you're not commissioned or enlisted. (Bad eyesight ruined my chances.) Used to be that combat soldiers (infantry, artillery, armor) got promoted faster and to higher ranks than clerks and x-ray technicians.
