School extends beyond the specific courses you study; it's a platform for exposure and interaction. Through school, you engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering an understanding of their perspectives and knowledge. While connections are valuable, their true worth lies in your ability to leverage them. I once knew someone with a connection to a governor, but without a university education, they couldn't secure a significant position. Therefore, attending school is far from a waste of time. Rather than solely focusing on the degree, recognize that the primary objective is the exposure it provides, opening doors to a myriad of opportunities. Networking, too, stands out as a crucial advantage of pursuing education via the school path.

Like the guy said. If something you trained 4 years for, you dont end up using. Then it is a waste of time. You can still connect with people outside of school. There are seminars and events you still get to connect and not everyone makes use of it.

@@kolapobankole8592 It's true that utilizing the skills gained from education is crucial. However, what I meant to convey is that the value of education extends beyond just the immediate application of specific skills. School provides a structured environment for learning, exposure, and personal growth, which may not be as easily replicated outside the academic setting. While it's possible to connect with people in various settings, school offers a unique platform for consistent and diverse interactions. Seminars and events outside school are indeed valuable, but the comprehensive educational experience involves more than just skill training; it encompasses holistic development and the cultivation of a broader understanding of the world.

I disagree, the primary purpose of a University education is not for exposure, it’s to prepare you for work. Exposure and Networking only comes as a byproduct of attending University, which you can get all of that in the outside world by joining relevant communities. The Governor person you said couldn’t get a relevant position because of lack of degree is just as a result of our society holding degree holders to a high standard. Would he have studied Agric and worked as an Accountant just because he went to a University without having relevant knowledge? I hope you see how flawed this is. Lastly, I’m sure you can’t mention more than 20 - 30 people from your University that you’re still connected to. It’s not by quantity but the quality relationships you build.

  • @Gold-lv5ih

    @Gold-lv5ih

@@dammieoflagos280 as a Nigerian, I empathize with the inclination to narrowly define the primary objective of education. However, I believe it's essential to adopt a more expansive view that encompasses both career preparation and the cultivation of holistic development. The societal emphasis on valuing degree holders likely stems from the practical aspect of aiding hiring decisions. When selecting candidates from a diverse pool, individuals with documented educational backgrounds relevant to the job may be considered safer choices. While this approach doesn't guarantee they are the absolute best fit, it represents a prudent and pragmatic selection strategy. Connections extend beyond personal acquaintances, permeating professional spheres. For instance, if an HR professional shares an alma mater with an applicant, it can undoubtedly pique interest. In summary, let's appreciate the multifaceted benefits education offers, spanning exposure, career readiness, and the nuanced dynamics of professional connections.

You can tell who actually pay attention in school and who did not by reading their comments. And no I'm not talking about grammar and corrective writing. The whole point of learning is not to teach you how to follow processes but you teach you reasoning. You learn critical thinking skills so that when you read something you can understand it and form your in opinion with out being sway. The problem ain't education. It is the lack of quality education.

Just like every argument, there is no solid line dividing things into black and white. SCHOOL (Secondary or University) has got its advantages and disadvantages. You can't say a doctor should not go to university, what kind of ''doctor'' will he be. However, someone can learn EVERYTHING about coding online without stepping into the forewalls of a university and be better than a computer scientist who went to university. I think the solution is to restructure the Nigerian educational space - Make primary and secondary school compulsory but make tertiary institutions more streamlined by improving technical colleges. Some people can learn plumbing and after 2 years set up their own business.

School entirely isnt a scam, it is the UNIVERSITY level SYSTEM of education that's a scam.* The school institutions will pile up all these elective courses in the name of credit hours that you don't need for your chosen career just for the students to be in school longer so these students will have to spend way more money to these schools or become indebted for life by owing thousands of dollars in student loans by the time they graduate that most cant pay all back in their lifetime.

I wish I am in this kind of conversation From the start they are missing the point, there are difference between being skillful and having a degree. Let me tell you! over 60% of the courses studied nowadays are irrelevant for modern universities, you can learn them with other resources. I am a self taught developer, working already, studied Industrial Relations and all my knowledge was gotten from this KZread. I am skillful and they hired me, not that I am having a PALI. I can still say courses like Medicine, Law and some few needs tertiary education, but not generally for all courses. You going to school to study Fine Art is a waste of time. If you take your time and you are skillful, and you take a course on branding and you publicize yourself and gain connection you will be far better than someone that did GNS in Year one and remember you never spent as much as them and you are already having experience. You need a mentor not a PALI. Elon musk said we have gotten to a day and age where we can learn anything within 6 months, we already have AI. So, School is saturated already and Experience is needed not PALI anymore.

27:38 History can be learned through novels too. People need to be more observant about what they see in media. I did history in secondary school, but before that I'd read Things fall apart, Eze goes to school, Purple Hibiscus at an early age. I read a lot of books about people in past centuries, and not just in Nigeria. Recently I reread Second class citizen by Buchi Echemeta, I felt so passionate about the tragedy because it felt so real. I eventually Googled her and found out that the book was actually about her life before she published her first book, turns out all her books are based on real people with real life situations that were possible at those pre colonial and colonial times. These authors put in a lot of history in their novels because they write what they see and know. Oliver Twist takes you into London in the 1800s. But people don't read novels anymore.

The more important thing is to pressure the government and educational boards to be more inclusive of Nigerian history despite the dark times and advocate for the rich cultures to be passed down rather than Joel saying 'go and learn Nigerian history yourself' if the educational system isn't teaching something that important then it is teaching useless things.

This was a really interesting conversation. It’s really a mix of both situations. Networking is key in Nigerian society and unfortunately it’s to the detriment of society as a whole because it is being used to put incompetent people in places they don’t deserve. Oddly enough though I think the idea of school does have a scammy element as it’s purpose is to create “worker bees”. From a young age you’re having your mind molded (8 hours a day in one place, listening to constituted authority, given meaningless tasks and tests that don’t really have a value) to make you a worker who will sit at a job for 40+ years. Just another nameless cog in the well-oiled industrial machine.

School is where you acquire artificial intelligence. Education is not just limited to going to school and learning how to read and write. I mean Abraham Lincoln became the 16th president of America by being home schooled . In Africa, education has become a business institution used to boost our economy. I wasn't suprised to learn that students in the United States drop out of school and still aquire much more than bright students in Nigeria or Africa in general. Their government benefits them unlike ours. Many famous authors, singers, actors and actresses dropped out of school and became famous in their craft. I mean in Nigeria education is such a big deal thst a sheet of certificate is a do or die to make it in Nigeria. But now, things are changing as many are using their talents to survive,e.g (content creators) rather than their so called certification.

OK my view is this, education to professionality level should end in secondary school. At 16 everybody should be a professional in their field. if we can have a system like this, i would 100% support this. Secondly i heard about the Intenship University and loved the concept, where while you school, you work. a 3 years course would take 4-5years but you are coming up with a 5years.

My question is, what is school? a place for teaching and learning,. Therefore any teaching that at the end of the day enables me to learn and be independent is ok for me, not necessarily going to college, or university. a school that will not add value to me to be independent at the end of 3 years is a scam.

Education is not a scam. In as much as most of us don’t end up using our degrees for work we still use the experiences, knowledge, ideas of what we have gotten from the four walls of an higher institutions in our daily lives. On the other hand, Nigeria needs to work on her educational system in other to change the narrative

If not for only the exposure and networking in the university environment, every other thing is a waste of time and a lot of us student don't know that, believe when i say there are more opportunities even outside the university. Just learn a good skill that is in demand and that all. The things that are taught in the university are outdated, they are not relevant to this current age, if only those in charge understand university would be very very useful and not a time 'waster'.

I read Education, we did Comparative studies of educational systems around the world. I saw that Nigeria has a blueprint that will serve us better but they've dropped it. Originally we aren't all supposed to go to senior secondary school, Basic Education (UBE) ends in Jss3, after that we are supposed to choose whether to proceed to SS or go to a technical alternative. Then some others will still not proceed to universities but will go to polytechnics , though not because they didn't do so well in waec like it is today. Also schools like film school, art school etc outside the university space should have been more popular. Today these alternatives have become where dropouts go to and they look like failures for it, however the real failure is the system not us. People like to say we youths are not employable, how can we be with a syllabus and curriculum that my 60 year old father used in the 80s 😂😂😂 , even as an education graduate , I won't be allowed to meetings where they decide on the curriculum.

School isn’t inherently good or bad, but the stigma built around it is what is bad. A bunch of Gen X, not accounting for the changes and evolution of society, told all their kids that university is a pass to success. It never was, and never will be. I guarantee you most of those Gen X who said that were ones that never had the opportunity to obtain a degree. Anything you invest money into is a gamble, even going to university. How you leverage your investments is completely up to the individual, and most of those parents didn’t understand that vital aspect.

Tertiary education seem like the major point that's been talked about here but he's point is going out the roof. The aim of school is to be trained to be a professional in your field or at least like the person teaching you. But education now in Nigeria is giant scheme where you spend loads of money and end up learning nothing and in the end you'll here " At least I got connection" was that what you went to school for??!
