Does the Internet Make You Meaner?

If the Internet's making you feel meaner, you're not imagining it. People really do act differently online than they do in person. Here's why. Co-produced with ‪@CommonSenseEducation‬

***Do people act differently online than they do in person?
Yes. This phenomenon is known as the online disinhibition effect. Essentially, being online lowers your inhibitions. This often results in people either behaving meaner, or opening up more online than they normally would in face to face conversations. When people act meaner online it can lead to hostile online environments. This is what researchers call "toxic disinhibition." Conversely, when people open up more freely online than in person-- they can often feel more connected to online users, which creates a supportive online environment. Researchers call this "benign disinhibition."
*Why do people act differently online than they are in person?
People aren't always meaner online than in person, but according to the online disinhibition effect people can act differently online. The most common ways people act differently is by either being meaner or opening up more. According to a paper published in 2004 by psychologist John Suler, there are about 6 main reasons people act differently online. First, if you're anonymous online you feel less accountable for your actions and less vulnerable when it comes to opening up about personal things. Additionally, online you're often "invisible" so you don't have to worry about body language and tone-- and you can easily misrepresent yourself. With online communication there is usually a lag-time between when you post something and when you get a response, so it's easy to just post something and bounce without thinking about the consequences. Online, we also tend to attribute voices and imagined characteristics to written text based on our own expectations and not necessarily on the actual intended meaning/ tone of the text, which can lead people to act differently than they might in person. People also tend to view online more as a game, where real life rules don't necessarily apply. And finally, authority figures aren't as big of a deal online-- online, people pretty much feel and act as equals, which can lead people to act differently than they normally would offline.

I try to ignore the “toxic vitriol” segment of the KZread comments section, but every once in a while I fall prey to it and respond in kind. Also, sometimes I say things that don’t seem terribly kind on the face of it, but are things I would definitely say in person to a friend or acquaintance in some sort of disagreement. However, the body language and tone of my voice would make clear that I am simply calling you or your idea out in unapologetic but amicable terms in the spirit of healthy discourse. That can be lost when all we have is text on a page. Sometimes i recognize this and simply choose not to comment after all. Other times I try to convey the amicable intent via emojis though that sometimes runs the risk of coming across as patronizing. But, eh, whadyagonnado? (Shrug)

I definitely agree that this was a very informational video about cyber bullying. Being able to verbally identify the pros and cons of cyber bullying can help to identify issues we face with social media and also helps create a pathway for corrections to be made to fight against cyber bullying. Cyber bullying can lead to so many negative actions taking place in a persons life and being able to reduce the percentage of cyber bullying that’s happening could help make social media a better place considering that it has become a huge part of this generations way of communicating, living, and providing ways to experience life in a healthy and positive manner

This site should be in school classrooms to see how they look with being so rude to people who there to learn and not be bullied. The education in school is not focus on the importance of learning .It's all about fashion ,popular ,and not books. So now to have social media and computers a lot gets said and now you have or get the threats of people you don't know. Because it's a lot of info about all types of attitudes and gestures you can learn some very harmful threats and words to people quicker.

I think that this is a very important topic since most of our children's lives are centered around social media. I know that kids can be so mean in person so it must be even worse with the so called sheild of a phone screen or the distance between the person they are bullying. And I know from personal experience how much word really can have an effect on the quality of someone's view of themselves. Words can lift you up or they can break you down.

Yes I do agree that the internet can make you meaner. As Myles said, most people who bully or say mean full things over the internet would probably never say in person, they feel protected by the screen between them. It is important to think before we hit send because the same way words can build someone up can also tear someone down. It better to choose to support one another and build each other up, there's is enough hate going on around the world so why no spread a little positivity.

I wonder if part of it is also similar to why people are so mean to other drivers on the road. The documentary by John Cleese called "The Human Face" he talks about how when you can't see the face of the other person it's harder to empathise with them causing people to be meaner to each other. It's why people can effortlessly navigate a crowded space on foot and there's no foot traffic rage, but there is road rage.

I always try to be polite and correct in any written communication: Anonymity on the Internet is never guaranteed. Written communication can stay around a surprisingly long time. I try to filter out people who are obviously mean - they generally don't have much useful to say.

I always try and be polite as well. However everywhere you go, either in the real world or online, you will find people who cant help themselves. Its way to easy to sit behind a keyboard and say whatever spills out onto the screen with no real consequences due to the anonymity. Trying to respond to, or otherwise correct these rude and usually overly opinionated people almost always makes the situation worse. Its just better and easier to ignore them and move on with your life. Good luck in all your goals! Lets be good people.

Sometimes you do have to be carful of what you say, you can say one thing and someone will flip out. The best anyone can do is just to be as polite as possible and sometimes you will have to avoid people. some enjoy bringing down others and lot of the time they are not bad people, they usually just have a hard life.

with the growing online social media presence of cyber bullying is at an all time high because it seems in my opinion to not be a resolution to how to prevent it in a huge way.Because internet bullies have a whole lot of access to easily change their information and continue on doing what their doing you know. Women and girls it seems to be targeted especially for appearance reasons I personally believe.I always check on Beyonce's thread I'm bothered when I see a negative comments but i just keep right scrolling😁 I truly believe that if there were serious rules inforced to at least slow down the amount of bullies knowing that they won't have access to the internet if their not abiding by certain rules.Just my opinion. with

Heh. Back in the early days of the Internet (back when it was still Capitalized), a good flame-war was considered an art form. I once got into a technical disagreement with somebody in England (I was right, BTW) that quickly ascended(?) from doubting qualifications, to negative labeling, to family heritage references, and on to name-calling and personal insults, after which it got silly in the extreme, where we were just trying to amuse the others in the forum. After we came out the other side we found common ground. To the point that he nearly got me a software R&D gig with a Swiss bank! Part of the fun was, indeed, wondering if the other person was serious or trolling, and trying to play both sides at once while avoiding being indecisive or in the middle. Today it seems emojis take the edge off. I think the one emoji we need most is for: "Sorry, not sorry."

I'd like to point out that another reason for increased hostility online; it's a lot easier to misunderstand someone and project a sinister motivation on whomever you're talking to. Someone might be browsing a forum on their 10 minute break at work, type something quickly and press send without realising it's pretty aggressively worded. As a lighthearted example; it's a lot easier to get mad at someone writing "Only idiots like pinapple on pizza" than "I don't like pineapple on pizza".

With growing online social media presence cyber bullying is at an all time high because people can talk and post negatively things without anyone knowing who they are. Cyber bullying has steadily been on the rise because there are things people would say on the internet that they wouldn’t say face to face. Looking at some of my posts on social media I can see how one could misinterpret my posting because sometimes I post and say things without explaining my thoughts for it. To help lower the growth rate of cyber bullying we can stop comments that are negative, bad, or harmful towards others.

I believe that cyberbullying is at a all time high because some people are very unhappy with themselves so they choose to make someone else unhappy. Cyber bullying has been on a rise because half of the people that be online now days are new to it, they dont fit in with the crowd that they are online with and they might have a lack of knowledge. Things people post can be interpreted for example I could make a joke on my social media page, not about anyone directly but things that people will do is general and someone can take it the wrong way. For instance I could post a picture of Beyonce' with no hair just for laughs and someone will get offended. to lower the growth of cyberbullying we could help by teaching those with lack of knowledge and stop it by addressing it right when it happens.

Cyber bullying has steadily been increasing because of the accessibility of social media. People have more access to social media and are able to target people more easily. Whether it's at random or targeted. Along with the constant trends and the new norms alot of people seem to be targeted or due to cultural appropriation or appreciation. I do feel that sometimes on the lower end people may read messages or posts from their inner monologue so it's key to really look for harassing, and bullying cues.

With a growing online social media presence cyberbullying is at an all-time high because it is the top concern for student's safety when using the internet. Cyber-bullying has been one of the main problems for student's using technology, it includes posting or making up rumors, and/or threats, vulgar remarks, somebody's personal information, or any other rude, unacceptable behavior online. It's almost ranked just as bad as regular bullying, with it comes mental health disorders, suicide, and poor self confidence in other students/peers, causing overall problems everywhere they go, (school, library, grocery store,, etc...) We could reduce cyber-bullying by teaching students gratitude amongst one another, and their selves, encourage them to notify a parent/guardian the moment the problem starts, you could also set a good example, "follow the leader", for example. Teach them right from wrong the first time, and correctly, and they will always treat others how they want to be treated, especially with a prime example as yourself!

It has been on the rise because social media has been on the rise too. I think to help lower the growth rate you can ignore or block people that are not worth your time.
