Does Polish Transportation SUCK? [Kult America]

When I moved to Poland, I was amazed by the various modes of transportation available to citizens. It's convenient, it's fast and what's more - it's eco-friendly. But Poles always complain about their public transport, so on today's episode of Kult America I will take a 48 hour trip across Poland to find out if Polish transport sucks?

    I learnt that very early when I went to Poland to live, it was funny, I remember people complaining that the winter was rainy instead of snowy, when the snow came, oh shit, za dużo śniegu, nie można chodzić, then when the spring came finally, och nie, teraz za bardzo pada, a póżniej za ciepło jest... c'mon people! Give me a break! Sorry about my Polish, it's not great! xD Anyway, that's very funny!

    It's not just coal that's the problem during the winter. I think much bigger problem is that people are often burning trash which pollutes the air much more then coal (which isn't perfect either, I admit)

    People in EU are complaining about our coal energy. But nobody says that Germany alone emits three times more pollution by coal than Polish "black gold" industry. Double standards?

  • @lordwiadro83

    @lordwiadro83

    6 жыл бұрын

    TheAnihillus Yes, but most of the coal in Germany is burnt in power plants that have filters, so the pollutants don't get into people's lungs. It's just CO2 emission (green house gas, but not toxic as such). The whole discussion about Polish air quality comes down to the so-called low emission. People burn low quality coal and other garbage and certainly don't have any filters.

  • @TheSnorlax122

    @TheSnorlax122

    6 жыл бұрын

    Exacly. Coal providers have no obligations to tell you that the coal they are selling is not suitable for domestic use. Most of the time they are selling coal that is not good. A lot of dust and sulfur in it. And on the topic of power plants. They have a lot of systems that eliminate contaminates. Sulfur, Dust everythink you can think off. The problem is as @myszka_miki sayd, Ppl are burning not so clean coal, and have zero protection against the dust and contaminates. Also the low emission thing

    I think that blaming the others - even if they are more guilty than us regarding air pollution (which isn't exactly true) will not solve the problem of polluted air in Poland. It doesn't matter if there are countries even more polluted than Poland is - what matters are statistics and they are alarming. The air we breathe is full of toxic substances and it is up to us to fight the pollution.

    I used to live in Warsaw, in the middle of the city. Me and my parents didn't have a car, so all the time, we were travelling by public transport. Now I'm living in Melbourne, where sometimes I'm travelling by public transport. When I compare these 2 cities and their public transport, I have admit that public transport in Warsaw was (and probably still is) so much better than in Melbourne. It's true that Melbourne have awesome metro, which is very big and punctual. But in the other hand buses are completely opposite. They're always late and never consistent with the timetable. In addition sometimes when you missed the bus you have to wait to another one about 20 minutes or sometimes even more. So.... Polacy doceniajcie co macie!!!!

I was there visiting because I was dating a Woman from the Czech Republic she had to study for some exams and I had time off and thought I'd go visit Poland since it wasn't too far away I'm going again to visit Poland. A friend of mine that is Ukrainian, works in Katowice. I will stay a few days and then we are going to head to Ukraine I'm really looking forward to visiting Poland again. Good soon it as a country is doing so well. Unfortunately for me I am a Respiratory Care Practitioner, and I'm pretty sure there's no such a a thing in Poland's social medical Care, maybe...but probably not, I would love to move back to Europe permanently as long as I can make a decent living.

    In answer to your question, why we are traveling from Warsaw to Kraków by cars? Because it is much cheaper (you took the premium Pendolino - 100zł per person. A car trip is about 75zł for fuel. And you can take passengers. Also normal people don't live on the train stations, and the train doesn't take you door to door. Warsaw Kraków and Warsaw Katowice are the only tracks where a train can achieve 200 km/h. On any other route the car is always faster (and cheaper for 2 or more voyagers).

    Lot has changed during last 10 years. You can see that in public transportation - new trains, new buses. Belive me... You wouldnt be so excited about train toilets 15 years ago ;). I guess were on the right track.

    We were having this conversation the other day about if we end up moving there would we spend the $ to ship our cars there. My husband told me how great the public trans is there and I believed him but was good to see it for myself. We figured we’d sell his big Jeep and keep my little Nissan Juke since it’s very small, cheap to ship and great on gas. Since public trans is so much better there we didn’t think we’d need two cars and we’d rarely use my little car but I didn’t want to be without a vehicle especially for adventuring and just getting in a car and driving to some random place. Great video. It really was informative. You always seem to touch on a topic we seem to be discussing currently.

    During winter or summer holidays trains are often really badly overcrowded and recently trains can be often delayed due to repair and modernization works of the railway network (also when the nature is being pissed off and send us a hurricane). Also still older trains, buses and trams lack air conditioning so during summer it is incredibly hot inside and during winter it can be really cold. Besides that I think that polish public transportation made a gigantic positive change in the last 10 years. Old trains, buses and trams are being constantly and fast replaced by new ones or are being modernized (for example gigantic modernization program of EN-57 trains which are around 60 years old) with air conditioning, wi-fi, clean toilets (it was and still is a huge problem in older trains) and places to charge your mobile electronic devices. It is becoming better and better, however there is still much to be done to reach for example a level of german or dutch public transportation quality.

    hey Ryan, but you didn't take the "Telepak" train if it still exists. Maybe you had the "pleasure" of travelling by it in the past. From Kraków to Tarnów. Either plastic seats or the nicer softer ones but in the winter you just burn your legs because the heater is under the seat. That's the real deal. The more you go to the east, the weirder it gets. From Tarnów to Rzeszów we took a train in the winter, -25º C, one of the windows wasn't properly sealed so it was frozen and the train was very cold inside, then we got to the bus to the airport and the driver stopped at a petrol station to go to the toilet and get a coffee or something and left the bus door open... he took like 10 minutes and everyone was like "WTF?" freezing inside... then he just came back, closed the bus door and drove off without any explanation... that was just so funny! But one thing is true, where I used to live, the buses were very punctual and they covered most of the city. We took the nice train Intercity to Warszawa once and it was quite nice, even the toilet was good, and the trams in Kraków are very nice. I hope the trains are nicer now than they were 6 years ago when I used to live in Poland.

    Public transport in the largest cities (especially Warsaw) certainly works very well with modern solutions (especially regarding the rolling stock). Unfortunately it lacks a priority in spatial planning. Also the connections between cities, especially by rail, are on a decent level. However, the level of public transport in less urbanised areas is often extremely weak, relying on small scale transportation companies (so called "busiki"), or not functioning at all. It is a pity that they do not deal with this topic on a national level, especially that it only increases our dependency on imported oil (tens of billions zlotys annually...), not to mention the climate impact of the millions of additional car trips.

    As for Polish norms of wages train tickets in Poland are expensive. If you can afford to use trains like IC it is really good but, because low rate of pay in Poland most of people use TLK trains and they are like 30-40years old.

    I've been relying on public transportation system in Poland for my whole life and, having compared it to various public transportation systems all over the world, I must say we really shouldn't complain! Yes, the buses are not always on time, yes, the trains are delayed more often than we would like them to, but it happens in all other places too. Polish public transportation is also relatively cheap and more and more cities are introducing eco-friendly vehicles, providing faster lanes for buses etc. So I, for one, do not complain that much :).

    Hi Ryan. I agree with your thesis about transport system is quite OK in cities or between voivodeship cities. But i have to notice that it's very bad in rural areas (like Bieszczady). There are many places where public transportation doesn't exist or it's in constant reduction.

    I totally wish we would have that here in Houston, we have buses and they’re fine if you live inside of the city, we have trams but they’re trash and we only have 3 lines and I swear half of the people don’t know what a metro is, the department of transportation keeps saying a metro is” too expensive and too slow” and I’m just like you’ve never been out of Houston have you? When i told my polish friend about this he said “I’ll stip complaining about krakow”

    Szkoda że dobrze skomunikowane miedzy sobą i wewnątrz jest tylko kilka największych miast. Sama często korzystam i chwalę sobie komunikację we Wrocławiu gdzie studiuję. Częste i punktualne kursy, wygoda, względnie niska cena.
