🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🧪 Understanding Collagen Protein - Collagen is often criticized for being just a mix of amino acids, but it's more complex than that. - Collagen consists of specific bioactive peptides that have unique effects on the body. - The argument that collagen is unnecessary if you consume enough amino acids from other protein sources is oversimplified. 02:21 🌟 Collagen and Skin Health - A meta-analysis of 19 studies with over 1100 participants showed that collagen supplementation significantly improved wrinkles and skin health. - Collagen acts differently from other proteins and has specific benefits for skin. 03:32 💪 Collagen and Bone Health - A study with 131 participants found that collagen supplementation led to increased bone mineral density and bone formation markers. - Collagen peptides can positively impact bone health by promoting bone formation and reducing degradation. 04:27 🦴 Collagen for Joint Health - Collagen supplementation was associated with a reduced score on the wac score, indicating improved stiffness in joints. - Collagen can help alleviate joint stiffness, even if pain remains a separate issue. 05:23 ❤️ Collagen and Heart Health - Consuming collagen peptides resulted in a reduction in toxic Advanced cation in product formation and arterial stiffness. - Collagen may contribute to better heart health due to its role in connective tissues. 08:12 🍽️ Collagen Absorption and Supplements - Hydrolyzed collagen supplements can lead to a significant increase in serum levels of collagen-specific amino acids. - While food sources are ideal, supplements can provide extra benefits for specific needs, such as skin or joint health. 09:35 🔬 Understanding Bioactive Peptides - Bioactive peptides in collagen act as signaling molecules, directing collagen to where it's needed in the body. - These peptides trigger gene expression related to collagen formation, aiding in repair and maintenance. 11:51 🍔 Natural Collagen Sources - Instead of relying solely on supplements, consider incorporating collagen-rich foods like ground beef into your diet. - Collagen is not a scam; it plays a crucial role in tissue repair and maintenance. I have competed in the Olympic games and track and field, and I'm now 60 years old. I have been coaching athletes for the last 30 years to make Olympic teams and set world records. One of the most outstanding things that I have ever seen in connective tissue strengthening and recovery for myself and other athletes, was to add collagen along with whey protein. Collagen has more l-glutamine than whey protein when it comes to amino acid breakdown, and over the last 30 years, I have personally had over 100 people tell me how much their joints feel better after using collagen peptides. I hold several world records for the age group in track and field. I am coaching an athlete on his nutrition who is 53 years old and just set the world record in the 200m for the over 50 athletes, and yes he is using collagen. Olympic athlete Wyndell Dickinson

I'm 71 and have played the guitar -- finger-pick style -- since I was a teenager. When I turned 60, my nails could not keep up, and they became very thin and brittle. I tried all kinds of things including Biotin and topical oils, but nothing made them stronger. Playing classical guitar without nails is not very enjoyable. Nine months ago I started taking Collage Peptides -- 5g morning & evening. Within a couple of weeks I noticed a significant improvement in nail strength. My nails are now very strong, grow quickly, and I can finger-pick like I did in my 40's. So -- for me, anyway -- Collagen Peptides are my ticket to strong nails. Also, they're inexpensive and simple to use (compared to eating meat regularly): a tablespoon in my morning coffee and another in my evening tea. Playing guitar has never been more enjoyable.

Thanks so much for covering this research. I started taking collagen supplements several years ago, and the benefits were so clear that I just ignored all the naysayers. I don't pretend to know more than doctors or scientists; but just because the medical profession doesn't know *why* something works a certain way doesn't mean that it doesn't work. It just means they don't yet know the reason it does. I'm very skeptical of medical professionals insisting that their knowledge of the human body and nutrition is complete and unquestionable when we know there's still a lot that is unknown.

I told her star taking collagen and three weeks later her hands were not cracked anymore and she still doesn't use lotion that often and she has not tried any other new lotion that would have made a difference. So yes it was from the collagen and my dad has arthritis and it has helped him. When I get injured I take a higher dose of l lysyne and i take my collagen supplement, it just extra dose of l lysyne but i dont over do the amount. and I'm better in a week or two. Collagen in any form is useful. I started using it as chicken bone broth some years back & it returned functiin after increasingly disabling arthritis. Additionally going low carb has put it into remission. Adding in bovine & marine collagen peptide powder brought additional benefits to my nails, hair & skin, & I can only assume this is likewise internally. We now eat casseroled lamb shanks, pork hocks, chicken on bone etc in adfitiin to the peptides, which are so hanfy for travelling or warmer weatjer, just in coffee or sprinkled in food or drink. Pain & lack of function, & likewise cessation of pain & return of function, are great teachers, if we choose to listen.

Yes! Bone broth is a fantastic food and supplement. I've been making it for my mom for about 10 years now and she has no issues with her joints. She's a 70 year old senior who lives at a 5 floor without elevator, walks her 10k+ steps a day and never has joint pains. Couple of years ago she fell and had so called "typical wrist fracture" (it's when we instinctively bend our wrist in a fall to help absorb the fall), she had both bones broken and needed an operation. She recovered quickly from that and when we went to the physycal therapy 2 months after operation, the doctor said: I don't need you here, You have full range of motion in place. People can say all they want about bone broth being a placebo, but I will swear by it. When I see how other seniors her age struggle just to walk with their stiff, achy joints, it breaks my heart to see how they struggle to do these mundane activities. And then I look at my mother who doesn't have these issues I'm happy that we made her religiously drink her cup of bone broth a day for a decade and ignored the simplictic sentiment of "oh it's just a protein".

Can you name the bovine/marine collagen peptide powders youre using? I find Ancient Nutrition chicken bone broth protein powder to be very nice as well. Not tasty in the slightest and less versatile than whey, but in a fruit smoothie its pleasant in its own way.

@@SuWoopSparrow I'm assuming that You've asked me about the products I'm using and I'm happy to share! We mostly rely on home made chicken bone broth as it is the cheapest way for us to ensure constant supply of collagen for daily consumption, and also it is more nutritios way of consuming collagen as it comes packaged with other nutrients such as glucosamine, chondroitin and other goodies that leech from bones in the broth. Most of the times I "stretch" out my bone broth batch by adding some gelatin soaked in water to my cup of bone broth. Paralel to bone broth consumption I add a small scoop (5-6 g) of Myprotein brand collagen peptides to coffee, coffee alternative and cacao drinks, but these are not super regular unlike daily bone broth. So, in essence, it is (1) home made strong bone broth, (2) gelatin and (3) Myprotein collagen peptides in occasion.

Likely true. Heating a protein for a long time breaks down the structure into smaller proteins. This apparently makes the protein more digestable. So in theory, more bioactive collagen peptides would be absorbed. Pork gelatin has been extensively used in research and gets results.

I suspect it's the same as Creatine and other supplements if one already has sufficient stores in one's own body. I take Collagen Peptides for my joints, where years of PT and mobility exercises failed to decrease the pain and noise (snap, crackle and pop, but not a breakfast cereal). Candidate for surgery, but wanted to try Collagen Peptides first and over time (as all supplementation is not a short cut) the same level of PT and mobility exercises succeeded. I can do deep asian squats and full hip flexion without pain and also no joint noise. Separately, I'd also been treating my NAFLD with NAC in combination with the Glycine (about 4g) in Collagen Peptides. My liver health markers has improved greatly. One might argue that the lack of pain allows me to exercise more, but there have been a lot of studies about Glycine and NAC producing Glutathione. Even if Collagen never helps muscle gain (already take whey protein for that and have for some time), the rest of the benefits I have experienced is worth the expense.

@@presence5426 I’ve been using the Vital Protein brand. The one with VitC and hyaluronic acid. I believe it’s mostly type1 and type3 collagen though I may be wrong.

@@pacmanfl I believe that's a good product, and made from beef hide. It could be that you've had slight improvements in various body tissues, that are hard to notice. Bovine hide collagen is actually one of the least researched sources of collagen. You could try rotating to a different product (Ancient Nutrition's Multi-collagen) or bump up the dose to 15-20 g.

I started taking it for my joints. I really don’t care about any other benefits, but I did notice an improvement in my joints.

It works for many things, but it takes time. Also it tends to get used where the body think it is needed first. So not necessarily where you want it to work first. Example, you might want it to improve your skin, but your body might decide your joints or guts need it first.

Yes. Interesting theory. The old concept of "like cures like" is at play here. But it's not exact.
