I prefer social justice to having money. With social justice, that is, education for all, fair and equitable distributions of wealth, of rights and responsibilities, consideration of the family unit, of the individual human being, caring for the environment, caring for workers, preferring the needs of poor and vulnerable people (instead of caring for the mega-rich)… all these focuses will bring money into the wallets of the needy anyway. Ideal? Yes, it ‘is’ ideal. And we need to move each other in that direction, together, by our dialogue and action.

@@patthonsirilim5739 I assure you, I have no interest in carving out a false utopia of humanity without individual difference. There will be the extremely conscientious and hardworking and, if justice is true, these will reap the reward. I speak for those who are without the means to sustain a dignified living. The parameters of that *quality of living* may fluctuate across time, given economic capacity, but I do believe in the baseline basics, among which: food, housing, healthcare, education - basic numeracy and literacy… the add-ons of upward social mobility are nice-to-haves, but the fundamental concern is with each person being provided a basic quarter of living.

The things that more fortunate ones suffer from are things to do with themselves and their own being and "leisure" you could say. Whereas someone who is less fortunate has to deal with it in terms of family and future life. Let's take dreams as an obstacle for both sides. Someone who is rich can practice arts but then later gets the pressure from family to take over their business. They can still practice arts as a hobby. Wheres someone who is poor can't even think of doing arts and has to work their whole life to get to a point in life where they can practice arts as a hobby.

I agree that even though you never got help financially from your parents, being born in a wealthy family is in itself an advantage. It's already a step forward in the direction of becoming rich. It helps that you don't have to worry about working side jobs for your parents and siblings, you get into better schools, there might connections helping through some steps of the way and etc. I also agree with the point that everyone tries, but not everyone gets to be rich. For the ones who do get rich, I would say its true that they probably put in extra effort, sweat and tears. But sometimes it all just falls on luck. It's just something some people don't realize, in life, luck IS a variable too.

Completely agree with your first statement. My cousin and I are both healthcare professionals but his mom paid for an expensive private school and bought him his own practice/business while I had to forgo getting into the number 1 school in my field and currently am sinking in loans and will unlikely be able to open my own practice. We were both very studious people and he's honestly one of the sweetest cousins I have and I love him but I will say the wealth he was brought up in definitely gave him a higher advantage, and that advantage will also be passed onto our children. I'm definitely in a way better place than my parents and I know my kids will be in a better environment than me to succeed so I really cannot complain about where I am in life but I definitely agree with the advantage that wealthier families have to be successful. But at the same time I believe they also have to realize and take advantage of their advantage. My cousin didn't need to go to professional school, his parents are both loaded on their own, but he wanted to pursue higher education, so I admire him in a way too.

Coming from a person whose family is well off (now), money doesn't equal happiness but it 100% helps to direct you towards it. I don't have to worry if I will have enough money to pay my bills or put food on the table. I don't have to worry if my parents and grandparents have enough money to get by. Thus, I can primarily focus on my own goals/ needs. I don't like my current job? Ok, I can change my career path and I won't have to worry about tuition fees or other expenses. Knowing that I have this safety net, no matter what, IS a HUGE privilege. Does this mean I am 100% happy? Ofc no, like everyone else, I still have problems. However, had I been poor, I wouldn't have had the luxury to even worry about these problems (let alone have a dream) since I would've been too busy struggling to survive.

Wrong on so many levels. So many fucking levels. Because sometimes Comfortable equates to Happiness. If you buy a homeless family a home, do you think they will only be comfortable? Fuck No, they will even start crying because of how Happy they are. Imagine you need $100k for your parent's operation. You fail to bring that money and both of your parents die, do you think it will feel uncomfortable? How does this even male sense? If I fail to do that, I'll be sad and feel guilty till my last breath. But if by chance, a kind man offers to pay 100k for your parents operation and they lived, are you saying that you'll be comfortable? That's it? Just how the fuck comfortable has to do with being happy? I bet your ass that, you'll smile and shout the moment you hear that someone is offering to pay the bills. So stop this BS.

Money ≠ happiness Money = better living conditions For example; my rent is cheap, my dad and I are the only ones working out of a 5 person family. I’m working at a fast food restaurant and my dad works in maintenance a school. Life is definitely less stressful when dad, mum, my brother and myself were working. My family would have been able to finally buy a house. Edit: my mum left us out of nowhere so it is less financially tight because of food/alcohol/ cigarettes but less happy because there is drama now. So I’ve come to realise it doesn’t matter. Money is money, I love my siblings I love my dad and that is what matters like you see homeless people with a spouse and a dog and they’re happy how they are. Crude example: you have to at least buy a lottery ticket to win the lottery. Better example: You must first cultivate your skills or talent (not the same) to a degree where you can use it to entice luck, ie you and your colleagues are competing for a new manager position, what did you do/have something special that can even be considered as a candidate for that position, then only comes to luck, as opposed to not even being considered as a candidate.

And the best way to work with the will of the universe is by keep asking the universe everyday before you go to sleep. Am I on the right path? If I'm not on the right path, help me and put on the right path. Putting aside our ego is the only way to welcome peaceful life with abundance of provisions in life from the universe.

I know a lot of people who are hardworking and street-smart but they still struggle from the lack of opportunities life brings to them. Maybe in the future, they will have that, but not all have these kinds of opportunities, so basically, they still work hard, but not enough to escape themselves and their families from poverty.

My goal is to work hard to have just enough money so that I don't even have to think about it. Like, not exactly rich, but comfortable. But knowing how uncertain things are, I guess I understand people that prefer being safe rather than sorry, and just bust their asses off to get rich. I guess this all depends on how you were raised and how present money was in the day to day conversations of the people closest to you.

The last question shocked me a lot from both sides (If you try hard enough anyone can be rich.) I think there are so many variables put into place for the rich to stay rich and the poor to stay poor that not everyone can achieve it. And the people failing didn’t fail because they “didn’t try hard enough” it’s because the chances and opportunities aren’t on their side all the time. And I thought that at least the self made millionaires would understand that. Becoming wealthy often has to do with taking risks.. anyone sitting there can probably say it’s easier for them to take such risks because the only have suffice for themselves. On the other hand a single mother working 3-4 jobs can’t take such risks because she has to put food on the table to. Does it mean she’s trying any less then the people sitting on those chairs at that giggle broadcast? No.. it doesn’t.

I agree with the silver spoon girl. Relationships are also dependent on money. When I am the one spending on everything, the guy feels inferior and tends to think he is not capable of taking care of a family. If money is not an obstacle, you can enjoy other things in life without much worries. You can't just live for 30+ years in a comfortable way and accept someone who can't afford your lifestyle. It gets too difficult once you're used to it and people normally look for something higher than their current status always.. So it makes sense why women go after well-settled people.

I don’t agree with that 100% as that is old school and traditional thinking which expects the guy to always be the breadwinner. You both help provide for the family, but the most important thing is to do it willingly and happily and not mock your man for making less if he does. I have examples in my family. My sister in law makes more than my brother but they both contribute and do their part. They also respect each other too and not look down on the other for making less. My cousin also married a nice guy who has an unstable work history and not much of a career, so my cousin is the main breadwinner. She loves her husband and does not look down on him. They have been happily married for over 20 years with 2 young adult kids now. Therefore, women looking for men with money are either old school or are gold diggers. If you have a lower social position, do you even qualify to look for someone of a higher status? My former friend managed to marry a rich guy but she suffers from his family looking down on her and treating her unfairly. She may not need to worry about money but has a ton of other problems to deal with. I kind of agree with your last points. Those who spend a lot and live lavishly cannot get easily used to living a more frugal lifestyle. That was one of the reasons why Hk actress Gillian Chung divorced. One of my cousins divorced as she is high maintenance while her ex husband is a loser with not much money. Having the same views on money is important too. But if you truly love anyone, then you can change and sacrifice for them which is why the Japanese princess gave up her royal position to be with her commoner husband. Therefore, it just depends.

@@TrinhNguyen-sh4fj No I don't mock the ones who don't earn much. They themselves have a low esteem and even though I am not much demanding, they think they can't keep me happy without earning much. If they are respecting each other and consider themselves happy, then that wont be a problem. One can only feel it when they are in a relationship and the other one is not feeling significant just because they don't earn alot of money. Also many guys dream that if they are rich, then they can keep women happy. That's not true and they should change their mentality. Then only the relationship will work out. Women looking for men with money ain't bad, say if they were also brought up in a rich family too. Even though I dated poor guys, they made me feel like I was different from them and had a mindset that well-off people can do whatever they want. It's like I am still loyal no matter what but still get judged because I have a lot of options. Women can depend on men for money; that's not wrong completely. Many women want to work but for others, they just want to get settled and look after family. That ain't a problem. If a man is confident with himself, he can take care of the women and not depend on women. But men now expect the women to be working together with them and raise their standards. So it's not like men don't look for girl who are earning more. It goes both ways but marriage should be based on love, not just money. If they think too much about money, they can't be happy. That's why I said even relationships are influenced so much by this materialistic world today.

When you come from a background like that you can’t have just a "regular" job, you’ll be considered a failure, destroy your family’s work that been passed by generation, someone needs to take care of the land, run the businesses. Another interesting thing I noticed is the new money generation, where people try to flash with fast cars and designer clothes, well I can tell you that all the wealthiest people present themselves I’d say almost poor, we don’t flash, that’s not what money is about, if someone has actual big amount of money they’ll buy for example land, not a Gucci T that’s worth $2. What all of this is about is health, good food, good air, good water, if you have money you can ensure yourself a good lifestyle, and hopefully pass it onto the next generation.

In all honesty, I think that happiness really relies heavily on perspective and the comparatives/relative success. I say this coming from a middle-class background where I can admit to the financial privilege I have but also experience the stress of debt and financial hardship. Our family owns a 7 bedroom house in an upper middle-class neighbourhood - but this is only possible because of the sheer grit of my immigrant parents. And the help of my older brother who all work together to sustain the mortgage rates. We have this home, and some fairly nice possessions but it’s also because of the financial stress induced by maintaining these luxuries that we’ve almost become homeless and my family has broken relationships. Money doesn’t solve problems, but it can help relieve some of them if we don’t pass the tipping point where chasing/having money causes more stress. There’s a balance.

I have never been well off or anything but I was doing okay and I was pretty happy. Lonely. But happy. Affording living and having food in the cupboard, not worrying about where food will come from, will I have enough for rent and even being able to go buy nice food or clothes sometimes really helps and provides sanity.

I want to give another perspective is in a spectrum of poor Vs rich. The ones who are stuck in middle have it alot harder than you think . All my life as someone who is stuck in the middle of financial spectrum. We have to be careful in each step we take one misstep and you end up poor . We have to gamble each step . We have alot to lose at the same time we don't have much to lose . I hope my perspective make sense .

Money brings happiness is a question only asked from whom who has not suffered from poverty. If you can’t afford your rent, medical bills, take care of your parents or family members you would never question the importance of money, but that’s only that is, people overvalued happiness too, happiness and joy are emotions and you can’t feel them all the time, not even buy it, some try with drugs tho, so the arguments doesn’t make sense with the dept of the question asked.

I've had much more money than I have today. It's really uncomfortable to have 50€ in the bank. I'd rather be comfortable. Yet I'm happier thanks to a lot of other things happening in my life that have nothing to do with money. At some point in the past, I was miserable despite being financially secure. I don't want to go back to that place. Even with more money. Now that I'm happier and mentally healthier, I'll look for a way to be wealthier, so as to be comfortable again. In the meantime, I make the most of my life. Ps : I do live every day wondering how I'm going to pay my monthly bills and rent. I might have to give up my flat and sleep on my parents' couch. Still, I'm not dirt poor so I don't talk from a place of trying to survive, like homelessness or barely able to feed myself. It's all relative.

For me i think living comfortably, food on the fridge and pantry, a nice cozy home with air conditioner, can pay my bills on time. To travel local and overseas sometimes and lastly to be able to help other people when they need something, that's the life i want to afford. I dont care about luxury items most young people nowadays want. But living a somewhat comfortable life without worry because of the money i have seems like a pretty good deal to me

I think rich people dumb down what money really is. Money equates to all forms of knowledge, consumption and housing. Why not compare people who are born into a poor family(still currently poor) vs people with silver spoons. Without money you are succumbed to a work life that's not your own and will not be able to experience life freely as a rich person does. I don't mean to sound materialistic but Happiness is not even an important factor here. Happiness depends on the person, mental health, or living arrangements. You can be happy or sad despite your financial situation. But if I'm sad I have the MONEY to seek help. The other part of the video speaks about working hard but no one really brought up there's different opportunities for everyone. There's people in this world who have it way worse than what we can imagine. Saying that they're not working as hard is a bit absurd.

Well technically it is possible to live happily without money but it depend on your situation your story, your knowledge of the world Someone who doesn't know what being rich is, would be happy just getting a meal and a family, sadness come when you know something exist but you cannot get it People in the past never were sad to not get a mobile phone cause it just didn't exist, they didn't think about it even once And you don't think about wanting an invention who doesn't exist yet nowadays, but in the future everyone would want it

Great sharing of perspectives! Early on, Minseon observed that it's important to see how someone reacts when there is no money. Though the discussion did not follow that up, I imagine she may have seen or experienced how people can change attitudes for better or for worse as they go from rich to struggling or struggling to rich. But that's just me projecting some of the things I've seen. (I don't have any high rise properties though!) Happa's point about luck was very good too. In the US public discourse about wealth inequality, activists who seek to raise awareness of this issue and its consequences for a fair society say that a common misconception among both wealthy and nonwealthy Americans is that rich people are self-made and reached their current status entirely or largely through their own skill and work ethic. But economic studies indicate that this is a result of distorted perception due to sample bias and/or survivor bias. Our media rarely pay attention to the 75% of small businesses that fail within 2 years of starting. The media doesn't even spend much attention on the majority of the remainder who break even or turn a decent but not multi-million dollar profit. By cherry-picking only the most outstanding results, and then interviewing their creators and owners who are successful, we don't see the ones who worked just as hard but for whatever circumstances failed to survive the gauntlet. Luck isn't everything -- you have to work hard in order to have the right skills, connections, and tools to seize upon that luck when it shows up. But hard work with even just 1 bad luck break too many can cause setbacks for years or decades, delaying or preventing you from ever fully expressing your hard work as financial success. With most of them chiming in on the self-made topic next, I think that reinforces the above paragraph in that they recognize the value of infrastructure -- whether mental/emotional/financial support from parents, or instruction from teachers, community and peers, etc. Dongseok at some moments sounds like he believes most in being self-made at some points, but then on the "anyone can be rich" question, he calls it out as a trick question. I think it's great that he specifies anyone can work hard, but it takes uncommon hard work, hunger/desire for success, and opportunity. As Minseon says, anyone can become rich but not everyone becomes rich.

Sometimes its simply as having a small simple dinner can provide happiness and gratitude over a fancy restaurant eatout. But not able to provide that small simple dinner might lead to anxiety and depression so money is still important but remember constant gratitude will always lead to more to come in unexpected ways. For the second question I would have to say that wealth is not the ONLY way to show someone has met their goals in life. If someone wants to be a social worker or school counselor or a teacher, they get paid like shit but still do what they wanted with their lives. Having family and loved ones is also usually a very good sign of a life well lived more so than wealth.

Trying hard is not enought. It takes a lot of efforts and fails to become rich. You gotta keep learning and educate yourself financialy and socialy also. You gotta have the mindset, making good connections and sometimes a bit of luck and also be financially smart. It also takes a lot of sacrifices which most people don't want to take. Making money was never comfortable.

Wealth for me doesnt represent your goal in life. it can be a part of your goal but not all. Since there are circumstances that it cant be helped. society is pretty unfair

Having grown up in a fairly poor family, I can recount many happy memories of my past. We lacked many things. I remember I used to cut out toy images from an argos catalogue to play with because my family couldnt afford the actual toys. But I still recall those days with much happiness and nostalgia. I'm sure if my parents were wealthier, I'd have access to more toys and more activities. But I'm not sure if I would say I would've been any happier than my actual childhood. I'd disagree that money leads to happiness.

Being born in a wealthy family is an advantage , I'm a 25 year old guy and i was born in a family which was not so rich and was from a small town. I never cared about money or anything because Most of the friends were from the same socio economic background a m and my family provided everything that they could but later in my life i realised that not having enough exposure as a kid can make or break a deal for you, I was a good athlete and a good student but i had no professional coaching or even a good schooling though my father encouraged me to study by myself some other stuff too. When I joined college most of the kids knew things by default which I read/taught myself even most of the friends of mine can't even join a good coaching or leave the city for better exposure because their parents can't afford it and what they could have achieved earlier in life it took them more years to achieve because they were doing everything by themselves. Now my father and brother run a small firm and are making good money i clearly see the difference between our upbringing (mine and my elder brother) and my niece. She is still a 4 year old child but she's gonna get better elementary schooling than us and now we can afford a good academy be it tennis, dancing, singing or anything.she doesn't have to use public transport and waste double the time than usual. so having rich parents helps directly or indirectly but still my father can claim he is a self-made man.

Money doesn’t make you happy. Sure. It doesn’t provide that happiness you initially thought you’d gain from having it. But it does provide security and you can do lots of things that unexpectedly might make you happy with money. So even though we say money doesn’t buy you happiness, well guess what? The reality is it does. And not just that, it also opens up a lot of doors, opportunities and connections. Not necessarily good ones, but hey connections nonetheless. And to those who want to disagree with me on this, go right ahead. But this is just my opinion.

I really like this saying that you cannot understand someone till you have not gone into their shoes. For me, I come from very humble background and mostly I really want to be wealthy, so I can really relate to people who are self made millionaires rather than who have inherited their wealth. No doubt, rich children are living today like they don't care about money because their parents and grandparents worked really hard but the management of wealth is something all should be knowing.

I don’t think the question is whether money makes you happy or not - I think it’s about whether the cost of gaining those riches or keeping those riches is worth it. Many people sacrifice everything in their pursuit of wealth and then feel unhappy or shallow when they get to the point they wanted - because of what they gave up in the process (relationships, experiences, family, etc)

It is more about how happy you are with the process of becoming rich. Like if you inherit wealth you don't feel the same sense of reward as if you actually made the money for yourself. Money can solve many problems, but the act of solving those problems gives you a sense of reward which brings happiness. So like money in itself does not have the ability to bring happiness, but rather because when it is viewed as a solution, it is when it will bring happiness. There are plenty of rich people out there who struggle with relationships and their family and then they become unhappy..the reason why is because they don't know how to solve that types of problems which cannot be solved with money. This is why there are many 'checkbook fathers' who can only provide for material needs of their children whereas the emotional needs are left unattended. This leads to toxic relationships and family settings. This is the reason why everything in our life should be well rounded and we shouldn't think that money will make us happy. Instead we should ask our selves will money indeed solve my problems, or will my problems require a different solution. Also remember nowadays people think that because they are rich they can attract women..unfortunately that is the wrong type of women you would want to attract.
