My Dad is 60yrs old, he watched Maradona in his prime. He’s been telling me since 2012 that Messi is better than Maradona. Most of this debate is just for traffic.

The way Messi sees and plays this beautiful game makes him superior than anyone else.

Saying Messi is better doesn’t discredit the accomplishments of Pele and Maradona, similar to the Ronaldo debate when persons are backed into a corner; instead of having to admit that Messi was better they would simply say both are GOATs. There can only be one GOAT in a literal sense, Pele was great in his own right, Maradona too but c’mon….Messi’s career achievements outshines them all. This is not just about his numbers either, Messi has been dishing magic (This is no hyperbole btw) for over a decade and half! The persons who prefer Pele/Maradona do so based solely on a sentimental basis, specifically what Pele/Maradona meant to them in their childhood. In a sense, admitting Messi is the best would be akin to them discarding a closely held belief growing up….Messi’s technical ability, goals, assists, trophies and legacy places him firmly at the top of the sport; anyone who thinks otherwise will never, ever change their mind so leave them be.

Some people are holding on so tightly to nostalgia and childhood memories that they refuse to accept anything ‘modern’ could be better. Some others weirdly dislike him simply because they like the other guy they have been comparing with him knowing deep down, there should never been any comparison in the first place. Maradona was incredible, yet to say he had more influence for Argentina is factually incorrect. Like Messi, Maradona reached two world cup finals, winning one. However, the second final he reached in 1990 was with him having 0 goals and 2 assists at that tournament. Even though Messi in 2014 wasn't at his best in the knockouts, the reality is he was more key in Argentina reaching that final than Maradona was in 1990, given he had 4 goals and 1 assist. Those goals and his assist were key in Argentina winning their first four games. As for Maradona in 86, compared to Messi in 2022, both were obviously exceptional. People will say Messi benefitted from penalties, yet the reality is not only was taking them in those knockout stages is the biggest pressure a player can face, he still managed a goal or assist in every knockout game without them. He also went one better than Maradona in 86 by scoring in the final. Not to mention, he was able to perform like that at 35, while Maradona was in his prime at 26, while playing in a less evolved era. What sets Messi apart for Argentina though is he has also won a Copa America, which Maradona failed to do. Messi also has had more standout tournaments, while (as again underlined at this tournament) his longevity is far beyond Maradona. This is someone who is closing in on 100 international goals, while Maradona managed 34. In terms of ability they were close, yet Messi has clearly surpassed Maradona.

In his prime, Maradona must be better than Messi. Never seen Maradona play a full game but his videos are unbelievable. He was freestyling with perfect control when freestyle football wasn't a thing. The tackles on him were brutal. He'd score a lot more solo goals in this generation.

In the *124 year history of Serie A* , there are only 2 seasons in which the Scudetto was not won by a team from Northern Italy. Both occasions were when Maradona led Napoli to the title in the late '80s, something that had *NEVER* happened before and has *NEVER* happened again since he left. In fact, to this day no other Italian club from outside Northern Italy has *EVER* won Serie A, which has generally been a *MUCH* more competitive league than La Liga has ever been (especially in the 80s). That accomplishment alone will *ALWAYS* be greater than anything Messi has done in his career. 👍

Messi and Maradona always special to me, saying that I think Messi just edges it. Messi may not have Maradona’s 86 moment or the miracle in Naples, nor does he have pele’s 3 WC, but considering the longevity of his career, considering he has won every collective award possible (club and international, including Olympic and youth titles) considering he has the highest number of individual awards……I mean common, we are witnessing the GOAT right in front of us. Don’t wait until he retires to admit it, which I know you all will.

It is amazing how difficult some people find to admit that Messi is the best player ever. Although Pele and Maradona were the best in their time, Messi has been consistently this good for much longer. But of course it has to do with the empathy each person has with one another and i can understand that. For me it is such a pleasure to see the simplicity Messi puts in every part of the game and the generosity he has to make his fellows shine in the game. It is so touching to see how children love him. He is someone special for sure. I am so happy he finally got the Trophy he longed for so long and that he so deserved.

Messi can do what maradonna could do(Dribbling, Passing, Vision) but maradonna cannot even come close to what messi could do as far as goal scoring is concerned. Also Messi has been at the very top level for 16-17 years. This debate was not even close even before winning the world cup. World cup is just for those fools that believe a month long tournament is the most important thing as far GOAT debate are concerned. Messi is the most consistent and the most talented player the world has ever seen who has also won every fcking trophy there is to win. Peak Maradona was better than peak Messi. I dont think we can't deny that. His influence in Napoli and Argentina was that good. But overall a 35 year Maradona can't do anything in top league and his peak was few years compared to Leo.

Maradona took an 8th ranked Napoli to many titles ,, he had 2 greatest performances in single WC k.o and greatest overall performance in World Cup. Peak Maradona greater than peak Messi. Messi's best year was not 2012. 10/11 ,14/15 and 18/19 were better.

As a madrid fan I agree . After these performances in this world cup at that age it easily makes him the goat . No one can ever come close to messi .

Messi now sits in the pantheon with Pele and Maradona. All three sit together in the hall of fame. The godfathers of the world's greatest game. I don't feel the need to rank them because I have not seen Pele and Maradona play but respect their contribution to the game. All three have inspired different generations and proved they were the greatest of their era. That for me is enough.

Second, if you bring those two into today's game they get the same benefits as today's players - better nutrition, training, medical care, much more referee protection, better pitches.

Messi is consistently showing the top level performance for 20 years. He is 35 years old, won the world cup where every single of those 7 matches he was the key player. What else he needs to prove to become the greatest of all time! Sure, Maradona was one of the greatest categories but he wasn't as consistent a performer as Messi.

This is actually not true, that camera angle circulating the internet is misleading. There's an alternative angle showing it heads the head of a French player. Also why no Argentinian player appealed for handball, because it wasn't a handball.

Neither Messi or Ronaldo play for my teams ever. To me Ronaldo is one of the greats but honestly we have seen it before yes he’s had a more illustrious career than Delima but we’ve seen similar players prolific goal scorers faster jump higher etc etc but we’ve never seen a more complete player than Lionel Messi 1. No wasted movement. Every move is pivotal, simply mastered the art of dribbling to get to your spots without any added flair. 2. The best 10 I’ve seen in terms of assisting goals 3. Can bring the ball up from midfield if need be (not just a box scorer/ finisher) 4. His understanding of the game is on another level. Watching him he’s 90% of the time making the right play or trying to, like he’s watching the game from a tv view. 5. The calmest player infront of goal I’ve ever watched. If it’s one on one it’s almost guaranteed he’ll score 6. THe most consistent scorer of unassisted goals (I don’t know the stats but I can’t see anyone having higher) 7. He is dangerous from every single part of the pitch I can go on forever !! And all these cement him as the greatest the football gods ever graced us with and I’m glad to live in his era !!!

Maradona didn’t last that long during his playing career…Maradona never won COPA America…He took Argentina to two World Cup finals and won one…But Messi took Argentina to six finals of major tournaments, including two World Cup finals( 2014 and 2022), and won two major trophies for Argentina…One COPA America and and one World Cup…Maradona won only one, the 1986 World Cup…Messi has been playing at top level for the past 16 years… Pele won three World Cups but never won COPA America and never played in Europe..In my candid opinion, Messi is the GOAT…Maradona was amazing but his indiscipline life style cut his career short..Ronaldinho was also great but lack of discipline destroyed his career…Messi is clearly the GOAT…CR7 is worth commending for being one of the best players of all time…

It’s not easy to follow this sport especially living in countries where this sport isn’t that popular. When champions league was still on ESPN in high school, I caught the early part of Messi’s start to his prime and the golden years for Barcelona. And he’s been nothing but brilliant since then. For what I’ve seen, Messi is the goat. The R9 Ronaldo was the most unstoppable I’ve ever seen as a kid but he didn’t have a long enough run

It is actually Messi aura that galvanised and won the world cup. Tactics and selection can only go so far. As you mentioned, look at Arg squad and Fra squad, their 35 games run, it should never have happened. But Arg was the most resilient team this WC, a lot of micro aggressions and defiance because many in the current squad looked up to Messi and wanted to win it for him. With efforts, you make your own luck.

I don't know how these pundits become pundits, putting pele above messi.

The older generation will most likely always be biased to sticking with Pele or Maradona as Goat , I grew up watching and loving Maradona but I got to admit that , Messi regardless of generation or error he is undeniably the GOAT .

When one grows old, his eyesight is certainly affected. I grew up with Pele as my idol and then Maradona came and showed he is a sensational player. When Messi arrived in the football scene, he totally mesmerized me and I have not seen a player that surpassed my standards of an ideal great football player. Those who fail to see how greatest of all time Messi is, specially the old has-been football players, is most probably because of their deteriorating eyesight and stubborn beliefs of what is great.

It's a generational thing just like music. By time, Messi's legend will only grow and he can be the undisputed GOAT. Both Messi's and Ronaldo's numbers are insane. Being a teen in the mid to late 90s, I always remember how special R9 was. Powerful and tremendously skillful, way ahead of other players. So I understand why a lot of senior pundits even players and managers are hesitated to give one definitive answer to the GOAT debate. The personal impact they got from newer generation players aren't the same from the older ones.

It's a ridiculous argument, Messi is the GOAT and I'll tell you why. Messi is doing this in an Era when everybody is a well paid, highly tuned athlete. He has played against the greatest defenses money can buy and has embarrassed them on countless occasions. Football is more tactical than it has ever been. Football nutrition, science and recovery is the best it's ever been. This man isn't just showing up against semi pro footballers, he is dominanting against the best of the best. I respect Pele and Maradona but the teams they faced were genuinely semi pro at best! I mean no disrespect but it's a fact. Football has grown leaps and bounds since then, Messi and Ronaldo are genuinely in a class of their own the older generation is so attached to their Heros they can't even recognize when someone surpasses them. I think it depends what generation you're asking. if you ask the older generation they are going to be biased towards players like Pele or Maradona but if you ask someone that was born in the '80s up to now, nine times out of 10 they will say Messi is the greatest of all time. By the way he is the greatest of all time with all the records he has ibroken and his longevity it's something that they're not even looking at. Messi has played at such a high level for so many years something that Pele and Maradona didn't do. And hands down he is the most talented footballer ever. It's hard to compare Pele who was still playing in black and white tv days to Messi.
