My 03 Regal was running fine. I have a K&N air filter which uses an oiled gauze filtration so I cleaned my maf sensor (88k) ever. Didn’t look too bad just a little dark. An overlooked part of a tune up that really does make a difference and is quite easy to perform.

Awesome video dude, I love the reality and everyday situations a person may encounter that you captured in your videos. Never mind the negativity in some of the comments about starting your SUV, you don't need to hold the key in start for long, only for a second is sufficient enough to engage the starter motor to rotate the fly wheel and start your engine, continuous rotation of the starter motor on the fly wheel, will only burn out the starter. My question is, how long did you take, after you sprayed the mass air flow sensor, before you re-installed it, (how much time did you give it to fully dry before you re-installed it)?

SDSs look somewhat different between the two but in the end what really matters is that you spray some on something and it evaporates quickly leaving nothing behind. If you can get the MAF cleaner then get it. Otherwise, a quick drying residue free contact cleaner based on a mix of short chain hydrocarbons and isopropyl alcohol is good enough. Where i live, i can only get the latter and used it with no problem.

My 2005 Subaru Impreza, had a slight surging when cruising at 30 mph on a level road and the idle speed was a touch high and went up and down just a bit. I used about a third of a can of CRC and the car is running better than it has for years. The mass air flow meter elements didn't look dirty, but I guess they were coated with something because the difference after cleaning was amazing. That's the best 10 bucks I ever spent on my car.

  • @gregorykusiak5424

I clean my MAF every time I change my air filter. It’s especially important if you live in humid environments, as the elements oxidize (rust, in effect), and whatever slips through the filter gets baked on the heated wires and glazes them, throwing the readings off. Inaccurate air readings leads to poorer mileage. What your issue sounds like to me is crank/cam position sensor(s), and possibly the MAP sensor...those sensors give the engine timing and fuel delivery information too. (Got any vacuum leaks? Upper and lower intake manifold gaskets are infamous for developing them due to heat cycle aging...which is why they hammer on us for coolant system maintenance)

csipes1983 I just ran into this. I passed someone and right after I got back in the lane my car stopped running right. Started running diagnostics. Found failed check valve in the fuel pump. A couple injectors seemed to be weeping a bit so I cleaned them. Lower intake manifold was leaking. Did plugs just because. Cleaned MAF, throttle body, intake manifold, and supercharger as much as I could. After that it was doing the same thing, but it was starting now. Hooked up the scan tool and looked at the data from some sensors and with the engine off the MAF reading was jumping all over the place.

Pretty good video.... I have worked on many vehicles in my travel. Cleaning the Mass Air Flow sensor is easy Make sure you use the correct spray for that. Other sprays will leave a residue on the MAF sensors. Do NOT touch the sensors inside the MAF. Make sure it is dried before it's reinstalled. To test a Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF) Start Car. Disconnect wire connector to MAF. If engine stops. MAF - is working. If engine run - MAF is BAD. Another part to check is the Idle Air Control Valve. (IAC valve). It sticks also. Another easy item to clean is the throttle body. Use the proper cleaner for that too. You vehicle will run much better...

My 2001 tundra SR5 gained MPG after cleaning MAFS, but get this, I had a upper o2 sensor and transmission code pop up, trans code! What’s up with this, I was told the torque converter is incorporated into the emissions system, so I went on u tube and searched for a plan of attack, I found a lab guy, listened to him for 20 minutes and gathered this, it all starts at the air breather ( air filter ) and ends at the tail pipe, so I start at the air filter, it’s good, then I go to the MSFS, it is dirty, I clean the MAFS and two days later check engine light is off and no codes, what I gathered from the lab guy is the culprit is usually some part that is before the part that pulls up the code, 😎

Been getting a slight misfire at cruising speed and have thrown a lot of parts at that already. I noticed on my MAF on the side module, 3 slits in the plastic that were full of grunge. After blasting with the cleaner, shiny metal parts are visible. I'll bet these are functional as well and cleaning out the slits should be part of the process? Did a before and after readout of MAF at 3 different RPM values with my scan tool. After cleaning, the MAF values at 2000 and 2400 went up about 8 %. Proof of improvement in my book.

I would recommend that in addition to cleaning the air flow sensor, that you change the air filter, but you should also ensure that the inside of the air filter housing is free of debris. An air compressor will do a good job of clearing it. Also, inside most filter housings, there is a mesh screen or filter which needs to be cleaned out. The reason for all this is because the air that passes thru the air flow sensor must first pass thru the air filter, hence, its need for it to be replaced as needed.

Yeah, I've cleaned the MAF sensors with my Dodge Caravans over the years and it keeps them running like a top. Mind you, I don't wait until they won't start before I clean them. Once I feel the idle revving a bit too low and the engine start to hiccup, that's when I clean it out. I also do the same with the throttle body. Most people don't realize how badly gunked up the throttle bodies get and how much of an impact a dirty throttle body will have on your car. Especially with these modern "fuel efficient" cars, the throttle bodies tend to get dirty really badly and really fast and most people are totally oblivious to it. Also, replace your PCV and air filter once in a while!

I have a question, please. I got a lovely Alfa Romeo156 1999 selespeed 2.0 lit, 16V T.Spark The problem I'm facing is: The engine starts immediately once it is cold or hot, While it is running, The RPM drops to 500 and the sprayer icon "lights on" in the dashboard, then the accelerator and gear do not activate. To overcome that stage; I should switch the "engine OFF" and start it again, then The accelerator and gear work perfectly, It happens also when I reduce the speed when there is humps or bad traffic. I changed the ECU, but it remains the same problem. Thank you for your help. Bassam

Did this with 1998 Montero with V6 3.0 engine. Also had the idle air control replaced and cleaned the throttle body. Added fuel system cleaner to fuel tank. Oh, replaced O2,sensors. They were really bad. All in all, all running well.

the sensor getting dirty is absolutely a thing. almost every modern car has the crankcase breather routed to the air filter housing between the filter and throttle body, witch introduces oil vapor and residue to the intake track almost directly onto your M.A.F

@@liquidsmokemustang1537 the pvc valve is definitely routed to the manifold, the crankcase breather that draws in fresh filtered air definitely draws said air from the air filter box, its that 1/2in or 3/4in vacuum line that runs from the valve cover to the intake box. at least on my 2014 200, my buddies dodge ram and other vehicles ive worked on. under high rpm or if you have some ring wear the blow by will overload the pcv valve, slightly pressurize the crankcase and blow oil laden vapor into the intake track.

@@anthonyhewgley5543 Okay, I’ll take your word for it. Weird that Dodge would run it there. On my ‘15 Mustang GT it connects about 3 inches prior to the throttle body. You might look for an oil separator, sometimes called a catch can on that line.

@@liquidsmokemustang1537 2nd that catch can. Certain engine setups are more prevalent to blow by, not so much on the ls but my vq motor is notorious for it. Put in a catch can and no more blow by going back into combustion.

I notice your check engine light came on the First time you turned your key on, but it did not come on the Second time you turned the key on. Same thing happens to mine (actually mine is a Service Engine Soon, which I guess is the USA equivalent), and I been wondering if that's a problem. I read that ALL those warning lights are supposed to come on when you turn the key to the ON position so to prove they are all working. I never read that they are only supposed to come on the First time you turn the key on. Anyone know about that ?
