Great vid! I was interested in how the different charges of lightning work and this is the first video I found that really explained it well. This was more informative than the Nat Geo video I watched a couple minutes ago.

My favorite lightning fact is that when you see a lightning strike come down and hit the earth what's actually happening is that a current is being formed between the lightning coming down and electricity coming up from the ground or an object and the bright flashing "strike" It's actually these two leads connecting and forming a current

I saw it one time, probably because fog or clouds acted as a filter, but it was quite a sight, like a ribbon of light going up.

I went sailing and lighting is a constant problems in the tropics. It fry the expensive electronics making most boat unusable. What do you think about the wire brushes and smooth domes at the top to reduce the chances of strikes? It seem to me that to even out the charges in the air near the top would reduce the chance of forming an upward moving leader. In the opposite direction is the single pointy spike that concentrate the charge at a point and thus start the leader earlier.

I had a negative leader go up through me, and out my head. My hair stood up, I felt it, and my desk-mate commented. This was indoors in Miami. Shout out to my Cuban buddy Manny.

I once had a storm in September 2022 that featured an oddity: There was a lightning strike that had the thunder crackle it's way down before exploding it's way up!

Quick question about this. By the way fantastic video. Could one hypothesize that the earth and sky are always in a neutral charge and when that ionization shifts to either positive or negative on either side, then lightening occurs to drain off whatever amount of energy there is in order to maintain the neutrality? Do scientists/researchers know what that potential energy threshold is or how it forms? I would guess the positive or negative energy would be due to air movement across the surface of the earth or in the atmosphere as the earth is hit with electromagnetic radiation from the sun, then the higher negative potential occurs requiring an equal positive energy earth-based voltage to balance it out. I wonder if this is the genesis of the thunderstorm in combination with water vapor density/relative humidity. I don't totally understand electricity, but I have always been in awe of it.

On what basis do you assign a positive or negative polarity to the leader? If the earth is a pool of negative charge as claimed based on the potential difference between ground and points say on a pole vertical above the ground, why would the leaders from the ground be anything but negative?

Its actually capacitance...the charge buildup in cloud and on earths surface gets more than they can store..due to this the charge starts to overflow and sparks start to originate...due to charge overflow medium breakdown happens and hence and charge of clouds and earth simultaneously come towards eachother as the medium breaks

One thing I don't get, which this video doesn't address, is what is a "positive" leader? A negative leader vaguely makes sense to me - electrons being repelled by other electrons into a direction and then spontaneously creating arcing lines as the flow branches across the paths of least resistance. But what is a positive leader? Obviously protons and positrons are not involved, so... is it a void of electrons? I.e., a gap of negative charge due to electrons having voluntarily moved away? But that doesn't really explain why they look the same, as I'd expect them to have more branches or be plainly spherical in that case. Or are we calling it a "positive" leader when it's still the exact same phenomenon, simply occurring when the clouds are positively charged instead of negatively charged?

I'm sure someone here knows the answers: Is the earth pos. or neg. charged? There's a real or fake science called "grounding" or "earthing" that attributes good health benefits to being in contact with the earth by going barefoot to make an electrical connection and either get energy from the earth or allow the pent up electrical energy in our bodies to be released to the earth. Does this make sense to trained electricians? Thanks for an amazing video, Dan.

So, when you're hit by lightning, you actually have a ground leader shooting up out of your head or body to meet the cloud leaders? I actually knew the "meet in the middle" reality of lightening, but never put that together before when it comes to a person getting "hit".... I guess the term "hit" doesn't really apply anymore, not if you're contributing to it yourself through your grounded boots or something.... hmm

John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. The word by was replaced with the word through making Jesus not God in the flesh. John 10:30 I and my Father are one. Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Revelation 22:19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. My sincere hope is that all will ask Jesus to forgive them of their sins and be saved and grow in God's word being able to see how changing a word takes away the divinity of Jesus
