Does League of Legends NEED a Voice Chat?

Strategize with people and make new friends? Or just flame each other to death with thermonuclear insults? I can't predict the future, but I'd guess it'd be a mix of both, along with dudes typing voice diff in all chat.

I think there is a lens a lot of people miss in this discussion. The increased anonymity from your voice not being shown encourages toxic behaviour (e.g. when the internet came out and people could be their most horrid selves anonymously) and since that has always been part of the game I think it explains why league reaches a new level of toxicity since most toxic people in general are flaming from a place of insecurity. Also the removed anonymity of people that are clearly 13 which encompass much of the auto blame type players in the community in my opinion.

Most people are toxic on keyboard but when everyone is on voice chat there is way less toxicity most times no toxicity at all (in my experience) I also believe that people should be less fragile, when a teammate is heavily underperforming and u say something they insta mute no matter if u were nice or mean but if u say it on mic they feel like the whole team is counting on them and suddenly they try harder and keeps the game competitive that's why everyone always so tilted in league ranked because it's called "ranked" but it's not competitive at all it feels like a normal game of league

Toxic players are not punished enough, so having the competitive disadvantage in the team with the toxic players (because you have to mute them) is a positive thing to me. Overall I pretty sure that toxic behavior would be less present in voice comms than in chat or pings. It takes much more to flame someone in voice chat than just writing in chat or spamming pings.

VC‘s positives for League can‘t be compared to shooter games because League is a MOBA. Mobas don‘t NEED VC imo because most of the „complex strategies“ can still be communicated through pings, although a bit more effort. For example if I wanted Ori to give me the ball as J4 I‘d ping help on her and then omw, or if I were the Ori I could ping omw on J4 and then on the enemy team. But even aside from this, at some point we have to hold each player responsible for their own decisions instead of serving them each information on a silver platter or even micromanaging them. I mean if an Ori midlaner does not ball a J4 5 man engage then I‘d argue it is not Riot‘s fault for not introducing VC that the Ori did not do it but we should also put some blame on the Ori and recognize that it‘s fine because if a player doesn‘t understand that specific play then he/she does not belong above a certain rank. Going further even maybe it was the right play to not 5 man ult in this specific scenario which the Ori recognized and maybe protecting the ADC from death was more important in that situation because Ori might have been 4 Levels behind and did no dmg at all or whatever but in any case I believe that we should all adopt the philosophy that in Soloq each and every player should have the freedom to play their champion as they would see most fit.

I do think the game would be better off with voice chat, all things considered. The negatives still affect other people way more than they would affect me, for example, so from Riot's perspective, implementing VC in a game that's been going without it for so many years is too risky of a move

Ive played multiple games with voice chat and for the most part its just call outs and planning plays. I feel like including vc could seriously improve gameplay. Alot of times in the middle of a lol match you dont have time to type complex plans so when things dont go right people flame each other when in reality all of it can be fixed with quick voice comms on the go. Lets say an orianna is trying to get combo ult with a nocturn but you dont have time to type it out, without vc in soloq you just have to pray he gets the msg and goes and if he never does people just type useless jng. Imo vc can decrease toxicity and increase team oriented plays.

I think Riot knows adding voice chat to solo q is like drinking water to some people. That level of social interaction is just what the game needs. But they are waiting for their game to inevitably go on the decline to add voice chat. This will revive the game instantly imo, as solo q and comms are 2 completely different games. If this is true, I think that is kind of shitty, as they are thinking more for themselves than the requests of the community.

It seems like they have plenty of stuff in store right now to revitalize the game, like visual reworks of older champions, renewed focus on game modes and whatnot. Voice Chat is probably more of a profit matter: how many people will they realistically attract to the game compared to how much effort it is to implement properly? Imo I love the social aspect that VC brings. Sure, coordinating plays and shooting people through walls in R6S is fun, but it's the times when the team of randoms is exchanging jokes and singing together that makes the game shine

Playing league is like playing 5v5 basketball/ football. People keep forgetting that there is a score baord and every decision you make is like a long pass, cross, quick passing setup , through ball, pushing forward on the attack securing more goals , falling back on defence preventing said enemy from scoring and even own goals which snowflakes who don't care about the game and troll often do all the time because Riot is king of trolling and toxicity. Whatever i just said is how league works and Riot is working so hard to fight against it. It's all just a bunch of excuses and nonsense. they think players wont quit. Bro the games broken now, new champs ruin the game . so at a gaming stand point it sucks and the Riot Liberals and doing everything they can to try soooo hard into transforming the game into a snowflake unicorn casual game then a competetive esport by removing and damagine the competetive esport side of the game. Only liberals are capable of doing clown world nonsense. Riot is sayign no comms when they are allowed to comms at their workplaces. in dota you have a behavior system, which allows you to do certain things if you have a high enough score. so if you have lower than 8k, you cant use voice chat, under 6, u cant even used the chat. to get more in score you need to "behave" aschieved by getting commended after the game for doing a good job. most games people will commend you if you commend them, and report you if you used any toxic language. just like in League the system will automaticly detect if you get more than 1 reports from the same game. it works really well in dota so i dont see why it wouldnt work in league of legends. its not like dota is any less toxic than league. imagine trying to spot an invis hero and you have to type out " DUST" every time or just let someone get away because you couldnt communicate to the team in time. Timing is everything in MOBAs so being able to comunicate is A-Z to succeed!

Since you say you don't know exactly how the honor system works, let me shed a little light on it. One commonly over-looked aspect is how your account gets blacklisted if you have too many reports on it. I used to be really toxic a few years back and I was chat banned more often than I wasn't. Nowadays, I'm perma stuck at honor level 0 because if I type literally anything in the chat and someone reports me I get hit with another chat ban because I have a history of getting mass reported. I literally get banned for typing "bot gap" and nothing else (which pushes my honor level back to 0) meanwhile my friends get off with no punishment after typing literal slurs in the chat (true story) because they don't do it very often. Also, speaking from experience, If you play consistently (let's say 7-10 games a day, every day) it will take about 3 months to get from honor level 0 to honor level 2.

Why riot punishes for chat The reason riot has written chat, and refuse to implement voice chat, is for monetary gain. I’ll explain: Let’s say for instance, you have been playing league of legends for 12 years, you own all the champions in the game, and thus, have zero reason to even spend money on a champion ever again. Then let’s assume 70 percent of riots players base, are in this boat. This is a problem for riot, because they want consistent income. So, what do they do to get players who stop spending money, to spend money again? Maybe spent thousands of dollars dedicated to understanding player behavior, then create a system that heavily punishes players… not for trolling, but for typing. Players who are more likely to type, are competitive players who care about the game, while the casual player who is most likely just trolling, doesn’t care about winning or losing. This directly focuses on targeting the veteran player base. Riot likes trolls, because trolls create the environment needed for riot to force competitive players to spend money again. Riot figured out that, by using chat to punish, they could eventually over time give losers que to players who own a lot of champions. This was in the hopes that the player would type, and as a result get their account banned. But this was riots goal all along, because by banning the accounts of veteran players, riot knows that players are most likely addicted to league and will get another account, and then repurchase the champions and skins they previously had. So now, a player that had stopped spending money because they owned the champions they wanted, is now spending money again. The entire reason riot has written chat and chat punishments, and refuses to add voice comms, is because they can’t track player behavior as easily, they wouldn’t be able to issue out these punishments as effectively in order to target specific players. Riot doesn’t care about fixing toxicity at all, they don’t care if we curse either, they care about money. Making the game M rated would remove the need to have most of these punishment systems in place, and allow players to be human. Simply doing that would remove most of the toxicity caused by the punishment system. The punishment system creates the trolls via making addicted players feel trapped, with nothing else to lose.

3 reasons why voice chat should never be implemented in LoL: 1) Toxicity. Self-explonatory. Especially now, in a super polarizing radicalized politicized internet communication in 2023. In the USA lol voice-chat become like any another gam voice chat: hate speech, slurs, politics. In the Europe, in the current irl situation, will be worse. 2) voice chat will make LoL performance on low-specs PCs worse. 3) SoloQ would be more unfair. Right now duos with discord com already has advantage against solo players. Will voicechat for everyone, duos will turn two people who cooperate into three-four people who cooperate. Botlane will be jungles playhouse.

I play in europe, I have had quite a bit of time in iron, bronze and silver and from my experience (and what I see on youtube and twitch) NA is at least twice as toxic and less people are actually nice. In EU I meet at least 1 nice person in 90% of my matches. So I think a good starting step would be impleminting voice comms in areas of low toxicity first to test the waters. Servers like russia, oceana and EUNE are good candidates. But thats just my opinion.

I'd imagine most toxic/trolls/inters can safely hide behind the screen and type away with not kind of confrontation - add VC into that, I'd expect those same people to be less toxic in VC. As for slurs and being misogynistic towards women blah blah.. Not sure how you could police that.. Ig you don't? Other than report as you would if it were typed? The main problem is that policing voice chat is still difficult. In Valorant, Riot has only begun to address the issue, probably through a program that parses the speech into text, and reporting the player will send that transcript along with the ticket The thing is, is that extra work worth adding the VC in a game that already has succeeded without it?
