DOES KETO ACTUALLY MAKE DIABETES WORSE? - Dr. Westman Reacts
If you've had success with a keto diet -- losing weight, getting rid of heartburn and joint pain, and maybe even completely reversing your type 2 diabetes -- what should you make of a doctor saying that keto causes diabetes? Should you abandon a way of eating that has transformed your health -- and possibly your life -- based on alarmism and hyperbole from someone with little to no clinical experience helping patients?
What does the science say? What does over two decades of helping people in a medical clinic say?
Watch Dr. Westman's newest video for his perspective on a video released recently by a doctor who favors vegan diets, who claims that keto causes diabetes.

Dr Westman my endocrinologist does not want me to follow Keto or carnivore, he is totally against it. I’ve been a diabetic on insulin for over 35 years. I’m also on jardiance and take the max dose of Wellbutrin. I’m fed up with the diabetic diet, he wants me in Mediterranean diet. I’ve used that it does not work for me. I decided to start Keto myself and keep adjusting my insulin pump. I went from 120 units of insulin daily down to 65 units daily. I can do this and will do it.. I am in menopause also. I am losing the inflammation throughout my body and have reduced my pain throughout my body.

I applaud you for deciding to do it anyway. You may want to consider, if at all possible for you, to find yourself another doctor who will support you with your health decisions. My daughter-in-law had a similar problem in which her doctor was making her feel bad about her inquiries into her health problems. We all supported her in finding a new physician that would support her questions and decisions. Now she found one that she feels really comfortable with and I think that makes a big difference.

@@fatbomb7832 Good news! Good for you. Keto was developed in the early 1900's because Drs were aware that food worked against diabetics, so to speak. They found low carb and high fat provided nutrition without the insulin explosion in the body. Why these Drs are warning of "coronary" when that is something most NON diabetics have to worry about is beyond me. Thats like warning a bike rider about a broken chain so much that they forget to watch where they are going. Keto may not work for everybody, but LOWERING the carb intake and using as much of keto as possible has helped me to lose almost 10 lbs in about 2 months. This made my Dr "angry" because I wasnt "carb counting" properly. I found a new Dr. who is interested in MY HEALTH, not THEIR program. All the best to you.

@@marianking1379 My mom is not statistically significant or peer reviewed but her experience has had real significance among her circle of friends and family. Nearly 3 years ago, my 84 year old mother finally had a follow up appointment with her physician which was delayed for months because her doctor has been in charge of treating Covid patients in the hospital and in nursing homes and was not able to meet with her. She had a full blood panel taken for this visit and her doctor was astounded at the progress she had made during the last year. She is now no longer diabetic and she was instructed to stop taking insulin after having been on it for 12 years. Her doctor also praised her kidney function which has never looked better. Also, she couldn't believe that her total cholesterol was only 139, with LDL of 67, HDL of 60, and triglycerides of 82 which is a big improvement for her. According to the Framingham Heart Study, these numbers mean that she is virtually "heart attack proof" as many plant based doctors have noted. Her physician (Johns Hopkins med school grad) mentioned that she is reconsidering the diet for her family based on this experience. She also asked my mom to share her experience with our community after the pandemic. All of these results are exactly what I had hoped would occur. Below is a typical day of eating for her. I plugged her bloodwork test values into the Levine Biological Age Calculator and she has aged minus 15 years during the last 3.5 years. I joke with her that she may be required to give up her Social Security benefits if she keeps going like that. She was able to get off of all blood pressure medications after 3 years, tapering off so as not to over-medicate which is dangerous because it can deprive tissues of necessary oxygen and nutrients. My understanding is that low carb diets are a workaround that do not address the root cause of diabetes which is excess intramyocellular lipids (also fatty liver/pancreas) and the resulting insulin resistance. Excess saturated fats and refined sugar/flour are the most common cause of this metabolic system failure. Unless a person can eat whole food complex carbs again without a prolonged spiking of their blood sugar, type 2 diabetes has not been reversed. Here is the menu for a typical day: Breakfast: Organic steel cut oats with some buckwheat and wild blueberries, raspberries, 1/2 banana, tablespoon of ground flax and ground chia seeds, tablespoon of hemp seeds, organic soy milk, Ceylon cinnamon. Lunch: Green smoothie heavy on the low-oxalate greens (frozen kale or collard greens, frozen pineapple, banana, orange, lemon wedge with rind, organic soy milk, avocado sliver, amla powder, dulse flakes, apple cider vinegar, blackstrap molasses, nutritional yeast, small scoop of hemp protein powder, fresh ginger, medjool date, fresh kale) with a small handful of almonds and walnuts - or - some soup and salad. Before dinner snack: one apple. Dinner: Variety of simple meals including spaghetti, chili, vegetable soup with beans, lintel miso soup with organic tofu cubes/onions/mushrooms/kale, split pea soup with onions/mushrooms/carrots/celery/potato, roasted vegetables (squash/carrots/potatoes), rice and beans bowl with onions/mushrooms/kale/peppers/salsa, organic tofu scramble with onions/mushrooms/peppers/kale/turmeric/nutritional yeast, broccoli, asparagus, green beans, etc. Dessert: frozen banana whip with papaya or strawberries topped some days with a couple of macadamia nuts or a Brazil nut - or - some red grapes. Make sure to include G-Bombs every day for optimal immune system (i.e. - greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries, seeds). Avoid most processed foods. Include tofu perhaps twice a week but not more. Stop eating after an early dinner except for a few pistachios before bedtime. Good luck and good health to you and your family!

Would you post what a typical day of food looks like for you? Are you counting total or net carbs? I have been on keto for over 3 years now (I'm also a senior, but female). I lost a lost of weight in the first year, then it stopped and my weight started to creep up again. Now I am barely holding my own and still have 25 -30 more pounds I should lose. I am also hungry most of the day, which was not a problem for me the first year of keto. I'm not talking about being 20-something slim but a reasonable weight. On the bright side, my triglyceride level is great, my blood pressure has improved, and my blood sugar is in the normal range when I check it. My doctor crabbed at me for high cholesterol, but I think that's bogus. Joe Rogan had a cardiologist on his show recently who debunked the idea that cholesterol is dangerous and that statins are helpful. The only people who are in danger from high cholesterol are those who have the genetic condition that makes their levels astronomically high. Statins are a cash cow.

Great news! I would suggest lower your carbs a bit more and increasing your protein. Also get a bit of exercise (or a bit more) if you’re able.
Literally reversed my Type 2 Diabetes with keto starting about 5 years ago. I'd been diagnosed with a 7.6 a1c and had already been looking into keto at the time. I asked my doctor if I could make some dietary changes before going on any blood sugar meds (ex Metformin) and we agreed to follow up in a few months. Within about six months, I was down to a 5.0 a1c. My doctor was baffled, because the idea of keto went against what they thought was healthy, but the numbers didn't lie and so I never got put on blood sugar meds. When I switched doctors in early 2020 (because of new insurance) and they took my a1c as a starting point (which was 5.1 -- a LITTLE higher, but still okay), the new doctor asked 'Are you sure you're Diabetic?'. I told him about my keto diet and he just replied: 'Well, just keep on doing what you're doing then! It's definitely helping'. 😀

You and I have a fairly similar story, only that I did end up on diabetic meds for a time due to the low fat/moderate carb diet I was put on. My A1C also hit 7.6 before I said enough is enough. I was on that stupid diet for four years and it didn't work. Just over two years on keto, my A1C sits very comfortably between 5.0 to 5.4 without meds.
The first time I saw Dr Gregor online a few years ago I thought he was in his 60s. I was shocked to find out that at that time he was in his early 40s, and around 10 years YOUNGER than I am! My personal opinion is that he's a quack.

Suffering from Long Covid now for two months, recurring migraine headaches, gone within 4 days on Keto. Good lord this is a life changing way to eat.
What a lot of people don't realise or understand (and want to learn) is that the majority of food that people eat is processed, some of it highly processed, with a lot of additional (cheap) ingredients to make it taste good and that they are deliberately formulated to make people want and therefore buy more. The food manufacturers are in to make money, and as a consequence of the health issues that the food creates, the medical and pharmaceutical industries are making money from it too. I'm 65 and have seen the big changes in food and what people eat in my life time. And up until 18 months ago, I was one of them. I'm now low carb and sticking to it. It's made a big difference to me and has improved my quality of life.

Fear tactics are not new strategies. Fear tactics refer to the use of fear as a means of persuasion or influence in order to achieve a certain outcome. This could involve the use of threats, warnings, or intimidation to instill fear in an individual or group, often in order to motivate them to take a particular action or to discourage them from taking a particular action. However, it's important to note that fear tactics can also be manipulative and unethical, especially if they involve spreading misinformation or exaggerating the potential risks in order to create fear. So I started this keto and now carnivore journey 4 years ago. I was 458 lbs, on 250 units of basil insulin a day and 35 units of bolus insulin with each meal, and my AIC was a 14. 20 years of diabetes and Healthy whole grains, left me hungry all the time, and fatter and fatter and sicker and sicker. Today I have lost about 170 lbs. On the very rare occasion that I do fall off the wagon and eat a donut or something, my sugar doesn't ever get above about 115 and then then next day I am right back on track. I don't think there is anything diabetic about that. This notion that diabetes was something that you just got and it would never go away, and all you could do was manage it. I was even told its kind of like AIDS you just have to take your medication and manage it. So many lies were told to me by doctors and nutritionists over the years. I once called 111 (NHS) when my glucose went as low as 3.3 just for reassurance it was okay and they freaked out and directed me to eat sugar NOW! I explained that I had no sugar in the house and was told to go to the fridge and grab a Coke! LOLOLOL I explained that I was fine and had energy and wasn't dizzy or suffering from any issues and they just wouldn't have that at all. They were going to send someone over so I told them I'd found some honey and had some of that.
In one of his videos he talks about his background. But no he's not a practicing doctor nor was he ever.
He deliberately uses a childish language because he knows that the public susceptible to his quackery will easily fall for it.

Yes! I wish people would realize this is SO different from all the other “diets”. I feel 20 years younger than I did when I started Keto almost five years ago. I tell people that the fewer carbs you eat, the less you crave them. Every year is easier! 😊🥩👍🧠💪

I would agree. When you learn about processed foods you realise that they aren't actually food. I'm finding that I'm viewing food as fuel. I'm about to celebrate my 2 year anniversary of low carb. Thank you for the encouragement that it continues to get easier. @@DebraRN1195
Yeah, darn that keto diet. My A1C went from 7.1 to 5.6 and I lost 41 pounds. That's absolutely devastating.
So what you’re saying is that having carbs after being on keto can lead to even higher blood sugar, but only for a short time, so just get back onto keto and your health will continue to improve. So the anti-keto lobby here are simply overreacting to a temporary response to occasional carb intake.
The Whole Food Plant Based is another name for Vegan. Vegan has a negative connotation recently, so they changed the name. Veganism has religious origins from a long time ago based on abstaining from eating meat to prevent lust. Now, they use old science and morality to push the cult. Food choices should be based on nutrition and results, not morality or something non-nutrition related. The vegan info I've seen, and it feels like a sales pitch or guilt shaming rather than stating any facts. The only good thing is that I use some of the vegan recipes and add meat or dairy.

So happy I ran into this video and discovered you. My HOMA-IR lowered from 4 to 0.9 after 3 months of intermittent fasting and a low carb diet, limiting my carbs to 50-80 g/day (and 100ish on not-so-successful days). All in all, I was never even close to the limit as per keto guidelines. Liver steatosis gone (S1 to S0), liver fibrosis gone (F3 to F0). The 6 kg I lost during those 3 months was a bonus. I have no first-degree relatives with diabetes or liver disease. I see myself practicing this lifestyle in the long run. These results don't lie.

Well, this is awesome news! You don't have to be deep deep into ketosis to get the benefits from a low carb diet. The low carb fruits like berries and colored veggies have great additional benefits for us. I applaud your results and am crafting my own 50 grams of carbs a day variant as we speak.

I wonder whether you have detectable ketones in your blood or breath and how your fasting glucose has been doing.
The raw disgust on Dr. Westmans face at this video makes my heart ache because he cares so deeply about his patients, and all of us out here trying to better our health through this proven WOE, and it truly shows his high level of character and professionalism. We appreciate you so much! Please keep up the good work and trying to educate the masses!! 🙏💕

I think we all agree that Dr. Westman’s integrity is beyond reproach. Love his mild-mannered style as well. 🥰🥩👍🧠🥑💪🙏🏻
Excellent video. Thank you, Dr. Westman ! I also enjoyed the introduction and the new style overall - though the earlier videos were always info-filled and enjoyable.
A fat friend handed me a copy of the Atkinson diet in 2000. She said “it works, but it gives me headaches.” I went on to lose the 50lbs I’d gained when my metabolism abruptly changed at 23, and she’s morbidly obese because she liked fat more than headaches. Atkinson originally wrote about fat being the most important portion of your diet, but he was pressured to even it out with protein. If you read his work though, it was clear, keto was what he thought was best. I appreciate my friend so much for that book and wish every day she’d stuck to it.

I want to preface may statement by stating I eat a carnivore diet and am usually in ketosis.(fat intake approx. 160 grams, protein about 150 grams) I am 5’ 11”, weigh 162 , 52 years of age. I have a better physique now than when I was 18 years of age at a similar weight. I have no intention of changing from my current lifestyle. I feel great and am on no meds, I’m also a lean mass hyper responder. I do not listen to the naysayers and those who think I am on the fast track to a heart attack, I go on how I feel. As long as I continue to feel fantastic I will continue to eat the way I do. These plant based people are playing to a subset of folks like myself whose blood glucose levels at rest stay between 110-120 at rest e.g. suiting lounging also in my case while sleeping. This doesn’t happen always but it happens frequently enough to keep my A1C between 5.4 to 5.7. When I am being active my glucose levels drop to the 70’s within 10-15 minutes. If I am doing something intense long enough my glucose levels can sometimes drop to 40. The Dexcom stops giving numbers and just states low. After the intense activity is over my glucose levels rise back 90’s or low hundreds within 20 minutes or so. If I was not wearing a cgm I would not know of the blood glucose drops because I feel absolutely fantastic all the time. Maybe a study could be done along the lines of what Dave Feldman to show how beneficial ketosis can be to help put other folks mind at ease. People who are unsure about the best course for them would benefit from that. I’m sure there are quite a few folks who are wondering if they should continue because of these lab markers and being scared to death by their Doctor and family members. It can be scary because not all people have these Baugh markers. As an example Kelly Hogan and Ferrignos freedom don’t have these high LDL numbers, their numbers are in the low 200’s.
I would never, ever eat low fat anything! I did that nonsense 30 years ago. I eat according to my blood glucose meter. My last A1c was 5.7 down from 7.8.
if you keep putting diesel into your diesel car, eventually you won't be able to put petrol in it 😂
Doctor Gregor is a cult leader if I ever listen to one... If this hadn't been on this channel with you reviewing it I wouldn't have ever even started to listen to it. Having now listen to it I have an even worst Opinion of him at the plant based appointment
Thanks, Doc. You are doing good work
Father Goose has charmed us with a beautifully woven fairy tale, replete with dangerous monsters, wicked sorcerers and magical thinking of every sort, delivered to us with childish vocabulary and a gentle voice! I guess i will have to go back to carbs and go to sleep like a good little girl! Gaaaaag!
I love Dr. Westman’s facial expressions. 😂 #properhumandiet
Reversed fatty liver disease 6 years on KETO 7 stone lighter....HBCA around 7 still working on it! I did this against NHS medical advise at the time. They do advise it now!
The analogy of the out of control car better represents the standard diet that most people eat. The tall stories just kept coming! Thank you Dr Westman for your honest opinion. Your facial expressions at some points explained your viewpoint very well. 🤔🤐🤨😏😒
I sometimes watch Gregers videos, he’s great at stating the complete opposite to a healthy diet . He keeps me confident that low to no carb is the right way to go . His “evidence” consists of many double entendre’s .

Great Doc.Tearing down the B.S. our there. Thanks for being tuned in.
Just the condescending tone of the guy on the video Dr. Westman played made me want to bust out laughing. I say let them have their beliefs. I'm on zero meds at 70 and feel great. I follow low carb and intermittent fasting leaning toward ketovor.
It's quite interesting that he says "may" throughout the video, but it's even more interesting as that he only focuses a "high fat" rather than on the type of fat especially when different types of fatty acids have different functions and uses in the body. What's also interesting is that Dr Chris Knobbe has good empirical evidence that it's excessive polyunsaturated fat that is one of the causative factors in insulin resistance though he doesn't discount high carbohydrates as a causative factor either.
Before Keto my a1c was 5.9. After Keto then carnivore my a1c 4.8.
Dr. Westman, thank you for your insight and effort to help us learn the truth. Please continue these video analyses from other “experts”.
You are very diplomatic. 🥰 . Continue please with these rational reviews! 👍🏼
This guy's metaphors are bonkers. Edit: 15:45 You covered it 😄👍
The keto diet saved my life, my diabetes 2 is now on normal level the past 3 years and my weight is down and no pain in my knees and ankles 🎉
Thankyou Doctor. Whilst I believe Bart Kay to be as knowledgeable as he continually tells us he is I find his manner and style of critical analysis to be too abrasive for my liking and I believe he misses a great opportunity to influence many more people as a result. It was refreshing to listen to you break down Dr Gregors hypothesis on such a controversial topic. It’s just so hard to discern the truth about the best way to approach our health with polar opposite “facts” being presented continuously on such an important topic as our health. I would like to encourage you to do more of these styles of video if possible. I would however have liked for you to have expanded more on the last two points Dr Gregor presented which you seemed uncertain about. More fodder for the oppositions reaction videos imo ?? But all in all I love what you’re doing and how you’re doing it ! Keep up the good work.

I can’t stomach Kay. IMO, Kay makes low carb-carnivore look worse than vegans for hateful dogma
Dr. Greiger certainly was against the keto diet. But on the other hand, he never gave his solution to reversing diabetes beyond it was just there. I am glad that this video is out her for people to see, there are different sides to a story, but making things up about something is not a good thing.
Avoiding peanuts doesn't fix the underlying peanut allergy (and can even make it worse) so those people should go on a high peanut diet instead of avoiding them altogether.
Love these videos!
LOVE you and your Chanel! Thank you!!!!!
Thank you so much!
Great vid Doc
I can’t even understand what his premise is. Other than keto is bad, but because of what? It makes no sense. There is no logic to it…
Thank you for another great video, a much needed take-down of Greger. I've heard that he never completed residency training, and you point out, Dr. Westman, that he has no academic or clinical post. Of course, he has no data to back up his claims.

But he has a bunch of great metaphores
All that low fat high carb diet for most of my adult life did for me is gave me gallstones and pre diabetes and fatty liver just to name a few. Which a low carb and high fat diet have reversed most of these. And I am still trying to heal some of the side effects of that low fat died to this day! Worst mistake is not to eat animal fat!!!
I appreciate how you keep your composure when listening to these ridiculous claims and attempts to scare people.
Diagnosed in Aug w/T2D and first thing the nurse wanted to do was put me on metformin. I fought hard to show her that my glucose numbers could come down w/o meds. I asked for 1 month. Told her I could get my numbers down (A1c will take longer). My numbers went from 200s to 120s fasting. Today, mty estimated A1c is 5.4 from 7.4. My glucose was 115 this morning. All from low carb/keto. It's hard out here. Doctors, nurses, PA don't want to hear about keto. So, I don't say the word. I tell them my numbers and what I eat. But it's a battle against the world right now. Diabetic sites, doctors, family, friends...all tell me I'm wrong. My numbers, my weight (down 26lbs), my glucose, my body say otherwise. 🤷🏼♀️
Thank you Dr. Westman for this series explaining how these people (so-called influencers/doctors) are spreading such misinformation about the Keto/Low Carb lifestyles. These videos are such an insult to those of us who research medical studies.
Never seen the mild mannered doctor so upset. Even the thumbnail, which normally poses spurious or unsubstantiated claims with a question mark, receives a complete rebuttal. Thank you for all your work Dr Westman.
I'm embarrassed and ashame to say that I use to be a supporter of Dr. Michael Greger, I listened to his propagander for many years, have most of his books and CDs and never losts one pound. Funny thing being vegan and overweight, I knew I was going to make it to 57. After going keto and losing 75 pounds eating, all the steak, butter, bacon, salt and pork skins I can stand, I can't tolerate this stuff. Unlike most people, I've been on both sides and recommend carnivore to my overweight vegan friend and family. Veganism only works for people naturally thin or willing to starve themselves. Dr. Greger was on another video predicting the death of people that go keto in 2 years. Great to see so many positive comments from "dead folks" !

No need to be embarrassed or ashamed. We’re all on this journey together to find out what diet/lifestyle will provide us with good health & longevity. Give yourself the proper credit for being interested in your health and motivated enough to take action 🙂
I started keto 17 years ago. Your videos have been a great help for me over the years by helping me loose weight, prevent diabetes and even manage my IBS,so I thank you. If I listened to this vegan dude,I'd be in really bad shape. This guy's channel showed up in my feed and I blocked him. This is what I hate about the Internet. Everyone can just spew lies about anything and no one can legally stop them.
Great video. Thanks
I went off keto because of this type of message. The doctors preaching veganism do not look healthy though. I am going back to Keto.
This other guy’s information is wrong - I was very nutrient deficient after years of vegan/vegetarian diet - low vitamin D , Low iron, low b12 and depressed. The keto diet helped me heal all damage from a plant based diet … these kind of people out there like to keep everyone confused and sick - don’t fall for it! Thank you Dr. Westman for the very important work you do!
Dr.Westman... continue educating about the ketogenic diet... these so call MD'S are trying to increase confusion! 🙄
After being on a keto diet the pancreas simply empties it’s reserves of insulin. On resuming carbs the pancreas simply says Oh we’re doing this again and restarts insulin production again and keeps a reserve store for future assaults from carbohydrates. This transition happens within 24 hours.
This is a type of cherry picking that is very misleading. To look a snapshot in time for you moment. Thank you, Dr Westman for countering this.
Sir, there is a new video out by MedCram on KZread about studies showing long term low carb may cause diabetes. Could you take a look and give us your opinion? I am just not buying it…

A few years ago I watched several of his videos. He is totally plant-based and no fats. He presents as the smartest and most witty person in the room...in his own opinion. 😒 Personally, I think the lack of fat in his diet is starving his brain.
I don't know how you can stay so calm, Dr. Westman. This guy is just spewing whatever ridiculous 'metaphor' he can dream up. And why are we always being threatened with death?
You know what else decreases tolerance to carbs? Prolonged fasting. I like how vegans forget to talk about that.
