I just picked up one of these (in the blue finish with a tortisheshell pickguard) this weekend. IMO, this is a sleeper bass. It was on sale for like 200 bucks. It has some killer range of sound, and some great finish on the neck and body. Setup on mine out of the box was pretty good. Had to raise the G string, b/c it was so low it was hitting the frets and buzzing.

You make some great points. As an affordable or entry point bass I feel it's a fantastic option. Truly depending on your music style will determine if it's necessary to replace pickups or electronics. I bought one for versatility to record at home myself. I play guitar, but this is a great bass for home recording. You can get plenty of sounds from it and good playability for the price.

I just finished doing my first gig with one. I usually play with a PJ USA but I thought I'd give this a try. My verdict... If you can buy one then get one (they're discontinued). They sound amazing and are a lot of fun to play (something about that short scale vibe) The two pickups on full are really fat with a lot of definition. Can't say the same about my Fender with both pickups on full. 10/10.

This is just a personal comment, I had 2 of these for about a year, along with a stingray, as I’ve only been playing for a little while tryna get into playing. I had one for a few months. Took out the preamp, put in 500K pots with non-stacked knobs (volume and blend), dropped a Seymour Duncan SPB-2 / SJB-2 pair in it, and ended up using the neck pickup only because it sounded better on its own, at which point I realized I had essentially built myself a non-PJ-bass-looking PJ-bass with a massive neck and an extra pickup I didn't need, so I sold it and got me a P-bass.

I like the feel and sound of my tmb100. So makes me want to pick it up and use it. Ironically when I was looking for my first bass this was actually the one I wanted to get. But I found the demos underhelming at the time. I then got a Donner as my first. But didn't like the feel and the aestethics of the fretboard and headstock. Sounded fine. But I got a Squier CV jaguar Bass instead, and I really liked the sound and the look. But at the time I didn't really got it used, and it felt like waste of money, so I sold it. Then almost a year later I decided to get into bass and guitar again. So I got the TMB100 and it feels like the one I should've gotten as my first one. Like it's my actual 1st bass, even though it's not 😅

I just bought one of these and I agree with every one of his points - great review - the treble and bass boost are pretty much useless to me - I keep them flat - I almost always use the P pickup - the J sounds really thin to me. Having said that - its a great bass for the money - As a guitar player now playing bass in a band, its perfect for me.

I think I'm going to pick this up. I plan to replace the pickguard and if i don't like the pickups, i might take your idea and go for the Seymour Duncan P&J's. From what I can tell from videos, I *do* like the sound for the most part, but it's maybe just slightly off from what I'm looking for? I'll have to see in person to find out. After watching this, I'm also slightly concerned about how it's going to feel near the lower frets. Thanks, and wish me luck. 👍

I have a Tmb 310 from the first run of Talman basses a few years back,I've told you about it before,it's got the double jazz aka a humbucker at the bridge and a switch to tap it into single coil, with that said, I do gotta tell everyone, though Ibanez might have the issue fixed by now,I had to replace almost ALL THE HARDWARE because ibanez used junk for it on the Talmans my A string tuner head came apart ,because they where pressed together,I had to have BOTH pots replaced. because of EXACTLY what you did, tried to take the knob off and broke the shafts,I had to use a bobby pin to adjust them till I took it to the shop to get it fixed,NOW WHEN I DID THAT,( mind you I bought it in 2017) it took the shop 3 months to get it back to me(good thing I got 10 other basses) because they had to contact Ibanez who then had to get all the crap they needed to build me new pots,I guess it's because each pot has a built in preamp, right on it,on top of the actual preamp not sure if the 100 has it like that or not

  • @JonnyDibble

Great insight here! Yeah tbf with this one, I was silly and didn't realise the Allan key holes on the knobs! I've actually got no issues with the hardware on this one, just the preamp which is too much. Speaking to a few people, apparently its the same story on the newer Ibanez basses!

I have one with a maple neck, and the frets were horrendous! Terrible fret sprout, and sharp as hell! That took about an hour or so to sort out, but for the price of the instrument, I really wasn't complaining. I personally love the active EQ, but I learned that to really get the most out it, you cannot run it on full volume. It will start getting into overdrive rather quickly. I agree with you that the pickups could be a bit better, and I am going to replace them at some point. Overall, I think that the bass is an exceptional value. The finish is great, and overall it's a well equipped instrument. I also have an Ibanez TMB310 that I mated to a TMB30 neck, and it is just a beast! The TMB310 has better pickups, and better wood. I put GHS Brite Flat strings on it, and it sounds amazing! The short neck on the full size body makes it a medium scale(apx. 32"),and it is just a blast to play. Now I just need to figure out what to do the TMB30 body that I have in the closet...

Oh no it's absolutely this guys technique. He's not an audio engineer. He's using a scarlett solo and a pair of KRK Rokit's like 99% of bedroom producers. Do not make rash decisions based on someone who doesn't know how to record. Fair enough if he doesn't like playing it because of the feel, but his recording is not an accurate representation of how this bass sounds. I've recorded them (in a real studio) a few times. While they are not the most amazing bass, for £200 or whatever you can get a very very useable tone with a little knowledge behind you.

Update, received the bass finally after 6 months backordered, some QC issues loose bass & treble concentric pot and string tree ,easy fix the blend control works in reverse clockwise rotation should be bridge p/u and counterclockwise should be neck ,nope it's backwards...Smells like rushed production , didn't care for the rough finish on pickup covers ,removed them and buffed with 1500 grit sandpaper those sharp edges are not that sharp they shouldn't be a problem unless you play with your knuckles 🤪 buffed the neck with rubbing compound to a semi gloss finish, was going to switch out the pickups but these actually sound good, Ibanez designed these to work with the preamp which is rather hot , takes some tinkering around with amp & pedal settings but some great tones can be conjured up out of this puppy .🤔😆🤘

Most "active" basses have passive pickups, but an active preamp which gives you the ability to cut or boost the sound at different frequencies. It's basically a mini amplifier powered by a 9 volt battery.

I really enjoy watching all the stages of the purchase. From...””oh my, how am I going to continue living another day with out this bass” to “YES!!! It’s finally here” to “hmmmm...this is pointy and cheap, but if I change this and this...oh this would of make a good mod bass” then change a couple things, plug it in...YIKES!!! “It has an active preamp!!” “Maybe if you put some nice passive pickups???” To....yuck...this is a hot mess! ...then finally “Regret” I’m not at all trying to sound like I’m picking on you. I love this format. It’s perfect, because WE CAN ALL relate to it. Thank you for your awesome content. It’s fun, relatable and you seem like a real nice guy. Cheers Jonny

Just picked up one of these in white, brand new. I love the look of the bass, and the feel of the neck. First thing I had to do was paint over the hideous "tort" guard (Ibanez makes some poor decisions with this model, one being that cheap, shitty tort pickguard.) Used a flat "Vintage Nickel" spray, after prep with a scotch brite, and plastic adhesion promoter. Looks really good! Anyway, quite simply,..these basses sound like ass. Nothing a good pickup swap can't remedy, though. So there you have it..a great project bass. 200 bucks isn't bad for a good body and neck. I'll get rid of the god forsaken preamp, and run it passive with some good Precision pickups. Doubt I'll even bother with the J pickup, as I never use J bridge pickups. Should be fun!

But as all throw around basses, one to many "throws" and it broke 😂 I held on to the body for some time, I rly loved it's sound 😢 Music store near me was going out of business and had a mexican p/j mustang bass kicking around (seafoam green) So now I have a seafoam green mustang bass with all the electronics from a tmb100 (active ofc) had a mother of toiletseats pickguard added to get rid of the hole that had the old pick-up selector. And swapped out the original thin ugly bridge with a fender high mass IV bridge (Mostly foor looks Tbh) And I just love it so much 😂 When people hear it they are always amazed by the fat lows yet solid tone definition 👍
