Yo Jonny. I agree with your comments. I think the SX tone is warmer. Squier is a bit punchier. Isn't the Ibanez an active bass? That would certainly put it in a different category. You put a lot of detail in this video. Good on you mate!

I've been a Jazz bass guy since around 1994 but started wanting a P bass a hair over a year ago. After looking through all of the Fenders, found out that their color selection on current models is absolutely abysmal! I wanted a candy apple red P bass with a maple fretboard. I ended up getting a Dean Paramount for $299 on sale. The thing is so amazing that I ended up exclusively using it on my band's new album.

@@JonnyDibble That is exactly why I'm shocked that Fender's color choices are so few. Even trying to find a Squier version that is just a P pickup with and has a decent color choice is hard. If you ever get a chance to try the Dean Paramount, you'll be shocked. I directly compared it to a $1500 USA Fender and have to say that the Dean was the clear champion.

The SX has a lovely finish. It does make you wonder why other budget manufacturers cannot do something similar. I do quite like the headstock on the SX. It does not infringe on the F trademark but keeps the round-ish shape. I don’t like the P and J inspired basses which try to square off the headstock shape and just end up looking ugly (are you listening, Sire).

J & D are also decent finish and cheap. DV 247 sell them in UK (Musicstore de equivalent to Harley Benton but they been working with them for longer than Thomann). Having said that I am not convinced about the wood under the J & D whereas the SX is quality.

I own a Squire PJ, an older SX Jazz Bass, and a TMB 100. I love all three, but the SX is far and away the best built, and the finish detail is impeccable! Both the Squire and the Ibanez needed fret work, but the SX was finished as well as my old American Fender. The neck profile on the Squire is pretty close to a Jazz Bass neck, and is incredibly fast and smooth. The SX neck is more like a modern P Bass, but still very nice. The Ibanez is very good as well, but it is really unlike the others. As far as tone goes, they are all very unique, but very well voiced. If I had to choose just one, I would be very hard pressed to make a decision... But, honestly, my SX is just so freaking beautiful! I'm very happy that I don't have to worry about making a choice between the three!

Then I got a SX 75 Jazz bass - beautiful bass. Added some Ironstone Jazz pickups and a Fender high mass bridge. Just left to shim the neck to get lower action (those bridges are high). Hi Jonny, In the end it's all about sound and to my humble opion, The Squier beats the other two by miles! The sound is clear and authentic for a P-bass where the other two are a bit messy in the lower regions. Off course price matters but it still doesn't squeeze out your bank account. Thnx for the video! I've been looking for an affordable P-bass for some time and this helps a little. The Squier would ne my choice, probably modded with a Fender CS60 pickup (like I modded both my Fender Mex and Squier J-basses with those) as I really like that vintage sound! Gettin' old I guess . . .

I had an SX P Bass about 15 years ago. It was surprisingly great for $200 CAD. Kind of surprised you said the SX sounded like the Squier except for being muddier. What I heard was that it was throatier/ beefier. Sounded like the pickup was hotter, and had more midrange and bass frequencies. Squier sounded kind of weak in the low end and midrange, which are what the classic P Bass tone is all about.

@@JonnyDibble I'm getting an Ibanez TBM 100 for my 14 year old kid. He has been playing on a Squier P-Bass, the absolut cheapest one, for about a year. I'm quite convinced that the Ibanez will help him to get to the next level.

@@JonnyDibble bro I have a question. Before the classic vibe series there was a different type of squire bass. I have a custom one....series parallel and I'm told it's a better quality one but forget the name of the series. Rear of my headstock has long since been cleaned off.. any idea what I may have?

@@bigriceburner There used to be the Vintage Modified series? The CV ones are made in Indonesia compared to the Paranormal Series which is made in China. You'd think this would be bad, but apparently the quality control out of that factory is superior! I've not had any issues with my P bass but apparently there have been some QC issues with that line

Or even J & D. I modded surf green £125 bass with £122 EMG J bass and its one of my favourite basses. Added the process on my channel. Having said that one of my favourite basses is the £120 HB P450FL with a set of La Bella Black nylon coated strings. No idea how HB can make such a decent bass for the money. Active too.
