Does Intermittent Fasting KILL MUSCLE? (Diet Confusion)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Stop being confused by how to eat to lose fat and build muscle
athleanx.com/x/easiest-meal-plan
Intermittent fasting is certainly one of the most talked about methods of eating to lose fat. It has gained it's popularity mostly by those who have had some success with it...in the short term! The issue with intermittent fasting and even some of the other diet methods talked about in this video is that they are questionable long term solutions at best.
In fact, a recent study was published that questioned whether intermittent fasting actually killed muscle or led to accelerated muscle catabolism. Given the nature of the diet, it's easy to see where this research has come from. Going long periods without eating (up to 18 hours) flies in the face of sound long term nutrition principles and respect for one's metabolism.
I'm not even talking about metabolism in reference to metabolic rate, but rather just the brain's preference for consistent supply of nutrient rich (glucose rich) blood, preferentially in the form of food rather than through secondary compensatory means that the body has of producing glucose in times of need.
Other diet techniques and protocols similar to intermittent fasting in their "fad" nature include fat elimination diets, the Atkins diet, and juice diets. While all may in fact deliver short term fat loss results, most will never be sustainable for the long haul. They will wind up leaving you fat again and looking for the next short term solution.
In order to burn fat and build muscle most consistently, you need to follow a healthy and balanced diet consisting of fibrous carbohydrates, starchy non-refined carbs, high quality protein, and healthy fats. No macro or micronutrient should ever be entirely excluded from your diet if you want a long term solution.
Athletes certainly don't screw around with gimmick diets and fad nutrient manipulation knowing how important sound nutrition is to their performance. Neither should you. If you want to see exactly what a sustainable nutrition plan would look like, then be sure to head to athleanx.com/x/easiest-meal-plan and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System and X-Factor Meal Plan.

the purpose to IF is to cut a meal out, not replace it with more cals at a different time. The reason IF works for people is because a lot of people will get up and not eat until 1-2pm and then have their last meal at 7pm or so. he mentions in a more recent vid that one big thing with different "diets" particularly IF is that you have to be the kind of person that natural eats in these kinds of patterns. If you get up at 11am and don't eat until 2-3 hours later and are not a night snacker then perfect. otherwise most people will just crash because they can't handle the drastic change.

I agree even though I'm not comfortable with it. People sleep all at once and have bedtimes they restrict themselves to while others prefer to sleep twice a day. I'm sure you can change it up with food just as easily. It's only because one is the norm while IF isn't which is why the majority sees it as restrictive which is the case for many aspects of lifestyle when you think about it. We automatically speak like our way is the best/most practical way when really it all comes down to- it depends on the person, as the only right answer.

+alarn2011 The point is to put your body in a fat burning state throughout the rest of the day, when you are not eating. Then you can work out and eat all the macros your body needs to build muscle and recover in your "feeding window" (or however your IF is set up). Basically loose fat during a 16h fast while "eat whatever you want" during your feeding window. Loosing fat is still governed by the Cal in vs Cal out, of course. Some argue that there are big benefits of fasting too, and maybe there is. Then there is Jeff's arguments in the video to take in to account. Personally I eat as Jeff preaches but I have real trouble with breakfasts, so I'm considering IF to make eating easier. @Kinobody is a big preacher of IF, among others, if you are interested in the other side of the argument on IF.

I have gained muscle and strength these past two years. Is it because of IF? I'm not sure because these past two years I've learned to count macros and calories so I eat the right way also to gain or shred. So it might be a combo of both. In any case, IF has made it a lot easier for me because it fits into my personal lifestyle and time frame that I have and I guess that's the most important thing.

Intermittent Fasting does not sell protein. Supplement companies (How much of the fitness industry makes money) that sell a lot of protein powders will not promote it. What they do not want you to know is that you do not need so much protein. You will not loose muscle by going several hours without protein. 0.82 grams of protein for every pound of bodyweight is plenty enough. In fact overdoing the protein can be detrimental to your endocrine system (AKA your hormones ex: Testosterone and Growth Hormone).

  • @transam351
    @transam3516 жыл бұрын

Jeff - love your videos but you're completely wrong about intermittent fasting. It does not belong in the crosshairs next to all of those other fad diets. Unlike juice diets, Atkins, No-fats, etc, intermittent fasting simply regulates eating times instead of restricting what you eat like the others do. You are actually doing IF right now without even knowing it, most likely a 12-12 cycle. By simply going a few hours longer without eating, you gain a whole host of benefits ranging from burning more fat as fuel to huge increases in human growth hormone. IF is actually more in line with natural eating patterns based on how we evolved, instead of the conventional eat 6 times a day methodology (which I assume you do, based your negative view towards IF). I challenege you to do more research into IF instead of just simply labeling it "another fad diet" because it's not. IF has been incredibly sustainable for me because I actually feel better eating within a smaller window, rather than all day every day. Currently I'm on a 20/4 eating pattern and have absolutely no problem going 20 hours a day without eat. In fact I feel great doing it, I'm more focused at work while fasting and rarely ever feel hungry. I've lost a ton of body fat as well. IF helps regulate hunger pangs more than conventional eating, making a more sustainable approach.

Some meat-head personal trainer tells me that the lifestyle I abide by doesn't work and isn't viable, yet it miraculously is anyways? Now that I am doing intermittent fasting I am finally getting lean, I am no longer struggling, I'm comfortable and I feel good rather than going totally insane trying to keep up with meals. Complicate? What you are talking about is as complicated as it gets. I have 25 years of trying it to prove it. It is not sustainable. PERIOD. Starving is ingrained in our evolutionary development.

MyLife-MyRules I’ve done it for a long time, it’s easy. I’m not as rigid as this dude who eats perfectly and only eat carrot cake once a year. That isn’t sustainable to me. With IF I eliminate a whole meal so that’s calories I can eat later so big meals aren’t an issue. There’s also plenty of other reasons though, like increased hgh and fat burning once your body goes into ketosis. When I first started I lost 47lbs without even trying. Once you get close to your target or normal weight though it takes more effort into eating clean and healthy just like anything else. The greatest part is though I don’t really get hungry. When I ate breakfast by 1 or so I was starving and ready for lunch, now I can go till 3-4 and just eat a small salad and I’m good till dinner. Its just life now and if I have a special event or something, who cares, I’ll eat or drink when I want and resume the next day. It’s very realistic, I don’t get why Jeff has such an issue with it when so many others such as myself have proven it’s easy and sustainable.

Okay, so I watched this video, and later on in the evening I had to come back and comment after I had some time to think about what you said. First, I watch you almost every day. You are like my fitness guru. I glean so much inspiration and knowledge from you in my transformation back to athlete from out of shape. I love your analytical and scientific approach to body management, and I depend on it. What bothered me about this video is you started talking about a piece of research that a subscriber recommended you read, and then you never cited the research directly or what it even said. I have been on an intermittent fasting meal plan for over a year now and it has been amazing. It is super convenient, I have seen great muscle gains (strict workout regimen) , and a lot of fat loss (260 lbs down to 225 lbs, and that is accounting for significant muscle gain. I am 6'2 and am now at 13% body fat. Dense heavy bones run in my family). Additionally, I feel so much better. I never feel deprived of food. My memory is better, my energy is better, I am far more alert, and I have much less inflammation; which is a big deal considering I have struggled with a bad back and left shoulder for years! When I clicked on your video I expected you to reaffirm both the research I have read and my anecdotal positive experience with the meal plan. Instead you started down a path suggesting that there was some research out there that would paint intermittent fasting as a bad thing... then you never expounded on that. You didn't cite the research or explain what it said. I am really disappointed. If you have some research to disprove the benefits, or even shed light on some pitfalls (other than you don't think someone can adhere to it) then share those. I implore you to do so. Thomas DeLauer explains the nuances of nutrition. I think you are every bit as smart as he is. Please... explain your position in detail.

I do a 24 hour fast about every 12 days, and I follow a regular diet the other days. Once every six months or so I do a 3 day water only fast. What I have found after following this eating regimen for this long is that I am incapable of eating large quantities of food at a time. I also don't want to eat all the time either. On the days that I am not fasting I still only eat 2 meals per day, and I drink a protein shake as the third meal. I weigh 210 pounds now which is very thin for my frame. Intermittent fasting has been very easy to maintain as a lifestyle. Several of my coworkers have seen my progress and my habits and have joined me in this lifestyle, and all of them have remarked how easy it is to adhere to, and how transformative it has been on their lives. I don't foresee ever going back. I have found my new normal, and it is easy to maintain.

@@Benzzzy. You are not starving in Intermittent Fasting. The world record for fasting was 382 days. Intermittent fasting only lasts for 16 to 18 hours. There is no way that you could even come close to starvation mode in less than a day. The research that I have seen shows that you don't begin to lose muscle until 3 to 5 days without calories. Intermittent fasting increases testosterone and human growth hormone. Intermittent fasting actually increases muscle growth, boosts the immune system, increases Vo2 max (making you better at aerobic exercise like running), improves memory, and reduces inflammation which causes pain around the body, reduces the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol, reduces risk of stroke, helps people who suffer from diabetes, and there is research that it also helps prevent diseases like Alzheimer's. The list is much longer than that though.

Intermittent fasting is not just for losing weight it is the fountain of youth. There are researchers at Johns Hopkins right now researching IF for all of it's benefits. It extends life. It decreases inflammation. If creates BDNF- proteins used in regenerating brain cells. It increases metabolism. Natural HGH increases 600% while fasting, this maintains muscles but can be used for muscle growth once your body switches back to food. Test levels have been recently shown to increase as a result too. There are so many benefits to IF that I think you should research it more. look up Mark Mattson- lead researcher at JH. And you don't ned to condense meals to 6hr's you can do 8hr's or even less if your add a work out to speed up the process. This is as easy as skipping breakfast. and it can be done everyday I do it everyday.

And I certainly hope that in that big meal of yours , you put some salad (meaning : raw vegetables) , that again you eat first , and then you have some cooked food.

When junk food, fast food, msg, processed food, and lack of time became factors in what we eat for decades, things became complicated. When we let our hands get tied, we were spoon fed addictive junk along with ideas of entitlement to overeating. Eating healthy shouldn't be a struggle, yet it feels like being in rehab with withdrawals. I need cheese on everything I eat. If there's already cheese on it, add extra cheese. When I fast and cleanse, I break the craving for cheese. But it doesn't always stick. I fall off the wagon and eat a whole pizza. Lol

Anyone can maintain IF. If your saying you can't its just because your not liking the results. IF isn't needed, but lets not pretend it's a fad when it is actually is an effect way of living a healthy lifestyle. Also the Akins diet has a lot of great info to help understand proper eating habits.

I read lots of comments about what some well-known bodybuilder or other supposedly does. I once made a similar argument to my endocrinologist. His response was that bodybuilders don't always do well, meaning with their health. (Arnold has had how many heart attacks?) So remember: Bodybuilders do what they have to for their sport, but you don't want muscle -- or leanness -- at all cost. You need energy, fitness, reasonable T levels, all around health.

I have been doing intermittent fasting more or less since this video came out, and I have had periods of worse eating, better eating, going more or less to the gym, but the only thing I have been able to maintain since 2014 has been the intermittent fasting. It is so easy to apply to your lifestyle and maintain in time that I can not say that it is a diet. It is much more difficult to maintain good food quality or going to the gym with a good frequency if you don't have much time or you dont eat at home, or you don't have money to pay for a gym... but intermittent fasting becomes incredibly easy and after more or less 4 years of doing it consistently, I can say it is not a diet.

I get the point, but what makes you think that IF is not sustainable? In the video you equate it to sticking to a 6 hour eating window, but that's only one very rigid interpretation. I don't eat breakfast on most days - that means I'm doing IF. On some days I will have some oat meal for breakfast or even eat a huge breakfast. From that angle, IF seems quite sustainable to me. Certainly a far cry from Atkins or juice diets in terms of sustainability.

+rusty rosas I think his point is, you don't have to stick to 18/6 everyday. You don't even need to fast every single day. The problem with the video is IF isn't a diet. There is no logic to group it with one. IF doesn't restrict colorized, macros, or nutrition in any way, it just gives your body more time to use stored body fat for energy. There is no reason people can't go 12-16 hours a day without stuffing their fat faces.

robert koller I just returned from a two week vacation during which I happened to skip at least two meals (lunch) because I wasn't hungry. There you go, I "do IF". I wonder how IF became synonymous with 16/8 ... the only common denominator is fasting. IMHO IF should be done truly intermittently, not on a rigid regime like 16/8.

  • @bobbykoller2003

    @bobbykoller2003

    8 жыл бұрын

+Mike EnRegalia I'm pretty sure it became synonymous whit 16/8 because the objective is to get the body into ketosis. I've read that after 4-6 hours glucose and glycogen are depleted and around 12 hours the body is in a good state of ketosis. The longer you stay in that state the more beneficial leading to the 16-20 hour "trend" for lack of a better word.

I enjoy your videos and respect your insight. However I believe you are wrong with regards to intermittent fasting. Have you practiced IF long-term? If not, how can you judge it? I know I have lost 60 lbs since last year and am sitting at 10% without issue. I'm no longer on a cut but still use IF because it allows me to have big meals at night without going into a surplus. The meals are delicious. It also allows me to have more energy throughout the day and I don't have to think about food, go through the hassle of meal preps. For me this is a lifestyle. Incredibly sustainable. I used to eat 4-5 meals a day and I was never satisfied. I could not sustain that schedule. Now I have a big meal + desert and feel amazing. No fat gain. In addition, I'm hitting PRs every week on my compound lifts (while in a fasted state). I suggest you take a second look at IF or be open to try it. The body loves IF and is geared for it.

Rather than going for a meal plan, I just looked at what I was eating and eliminated the worst offenders. For example, I used to drink a lot of soft drinks like pepsi or root beer, up to like 6 cans a day. Somehow I managed to stay at around 170 lbs, maybe just a good metabolism. By eliminating that from my "diet", I cut out 840 calories and 234g of sugar. I still drink juice, I still eat chips, I didn't become a health nut over night. Just a small simple change and it has made a huge difference. It's important to realize that small changes that you can make permanent will have a much longer lasting effect than changing everything about your diet and giving up 2 months later ever will

I have a great respect for this guy, but the scientific research surrounding Intermittent Fasting shown not eating for short intervals effects insulin levels, HGH, cellular repair, gene expression, fat loss, and cognitive function in a positive way. Intermittent Fasting has scientifically proved that it has greater long term benefits but also short term benefits in the way of slowing down the aging process, and making the human body to function to its full potential. Moreover, Intermittent Fasting is not a program you buy. You do not have to buy any equipment, workout program, or membership to do Intermittent Fasting. It is a life style. Also, it is the complete opposite of “complicated”, it is very easy. It is a misconception that you cannot gain muscle when doing Intermittent Fasting. You can still but your body in a calorie surplus on a daily base even though you did not eat 6-8 hours upon waking up. I know this because I actually did it. I went from 165lb at 12% body fat to 180lb and put myself in a caloric deficit all the way down to 7% body fat while maintaining all the muscle. Granted, it was a long process, but an enjoyable one. Intermittent Fasting is one of the most convenient and realistic changes I made to my fitness lifestyle and overall health. Don’t knock it till you tried it. If you are a viewer of this video, then I encourage you to find a fitness expert that has actually done Intermittent Fasting and see they what they say about it. Even more so, try it for yourself. Intermittent Fasting is not a new thing. It has been practiced in ancient times for centuries. Science is now starting to discover what it can unlock in the human body and mind.

And not to mention: lowering insulin and stabilizing it, increasing GH and glucagon and no doubt tapping into fat stores for longer periods

How do you keep from getting hungry in the morning until you eat your lunch? I drink four 16 ounce cups of iced coffee with Stevia and green tea with no sweetener. So my belly is always full and I stay hydrated until my first meal

As a scientist/mathematician, I can say that the science on fasting intermittently is not as clear-cut as one would like, and I agree with Jeff in that it is not necessary for gains. And his point is that he would prefer people just eat healthy instead of try to get a catch-all solution to nutrition, which I also agree with strongly. However, I adore intermittent fasting simply because I prefer it. When I first started to lose weight and get healthy, it caused me to drop all that fat extremely quickly. But now, I just hate eating anything pre-workout because I go hard enough that it would cause even water I drink during the exercising to come up. Whenever I eat and then train, I feel very nauseous and more tired for some reason. And I enjoy how fasting makes me feel; now I never have hunger cravings or headaches from hunger. Period. So screw the science here - I am not making any measurable claims. Except that not eating until post-workout at roughly 2pm every day is wonderful for me and lets me "keep my lunch" in the gym.

You can still IF while still eating healthy. All IF is training your brain to eat between hours. That's all.

DaN Louie Yes, and training yourself to not constantly eat like a maniac all the time. People generally overeat, not the other way around, so it's good to practice moderation. Intermittent fasting = having a disciplined stomach.

I started doing intermitent fasting to be healthy and for convenience as well...have dinner maximum but 9pm and no food before 12 of the following day. Started counting calories and macros and it also makes it easier financially and to plan the grocery shopping. In a month and a half I have seen the results that I didn't have even by training more days a week. I think these things changed my mindset and made me more conscious about what I was actually eating. I'm still training but now I'm also using MyFitnessPal and I've seen the best results I could imagine. Basically back to my body of 6 years ago in 6 weeks.

I understand what you're saying, though I do have great respect for intermittent fasting and I use it a few times a week. It really helps to keep my body fat down while I gain muscle. Increased human growth hormone is awesome.

Wim Hof, the Iceman, does intermittent fasting for 35 years! One meal a day, just eating what he likes, real food. A lifestyle indeed. Only for setting new records he eats extra 4 hours before. Difficult to deny his achievements, I think.

I think it really depends on your body's metabolic rate. I tried IF for about 4 months 2 years back and yes I did lose a significant amount of weight (17KG). However I was still unhappy with the end results; my skin was loose in certain areas like the arms, thighs and belly. My chest looked terrible, somehow pointier than before and really puffy around the nipple area (I'm male so this aint good lol). 3 months ago I started working with a personal trainer/nutritionist to work on my body recomposition and I've made more progress on my body than I could have ever dreamed of, and I just changed one very simple thing; an increase on the amount of times I eat a day. I was advised to eat high protein meals every 3 hours. This doesn't mean I ate a full meal every 3 hours, just 3 full meals plus snacks in between. I wouldn't even think of it as a diet cause I'm now eating more food per day than I've ever eaten before. That plus an increase in resistance training (weight lifting) and HIIT (High intensity interval training) should get anyone struggling to get fit pretty far. I'm 3 months in and my arms and legs have gotten significantly toned, quads are popping, biceps and triceps finally showing plus abs are very clear (on an empty stomach XD). My back changed the most, looks ripped af tho got a long way to go on my chest, but at this rate I see it happening in less than a year. Please note, I started out pretty fat, the kinda fat that turned eyes in my direction the moment I stepped into a room. I feel like IF works best for someone that's nearly there in terms of having a fit body, but i wouldn't recommend it for anyone really big unless ur pairing the diet with intense exercise. Hope this helps/motivate! (Not a professional by any means, speaking from experience)

I also fast... it works like crazy for fat loss, not to mention it eliminates the hassle of making time to eat earlier in the day, and gives me a lot of mental focus-very much the opposite of what people expect from it! Plus, I get to eat to my heart's content(still sensibly, of course) beginning sunset. I absolutely get Jeff's point on weighing in on these moronic, fad diets, and supporting general healthy eating instead, but as far as IF, I'm a firm supporter.

I agree with a lot with what you said, but Lean Gains IF is 8 hour window - not six. Essentially, you eat from noon-8pm, which basically skips traditional breakfast. It's really not that hard and very sustainable. Also, I'm not sure if I.F. constitutes a "diet" like Atkins of juicing because you can basically eat whatever the F you want during those 8 hours. Obviously, within reason and it has/should be whole foods.

Hi jeff, In regards to intermittent fasting. There are protocols for the 6 hour eating window you speak of but there are other protocols. Lean gains is an 8 hour eating window, EAT STOP EAT is 1-2 24 hour fasts a week. They promote healthy eating. 6 meals a day that you promote, isn't necessarily bad the emphasis behind i.f is about hormone manipulation and stability in knowing you can have a big meal without worrying about eating every few hours. Its not a diet based around supplementation. Many people simply cannot focus on eating 6 meals a day. Does it work for some? absolutely just like i.f does. It is sustainable but is based on the individual. Some promote six meals a day. IT ULTIMATELY DEPENDS ON THE INDIVIDUAL. I.F isn't just about simplicity. You make money off your products just as much as the next guy. (nothing wrong with that, I respect your work :) ). I guarantee you that you make more money than martin berkhan the creator of lean gains, his site operates off of donations for the most part. Brad pilon of eat stop eat has a few e-books thats it! Fast five is a free e-book. Supplementation puts more money in "gurus" pockets that I.F ever has.
