I feel you, im an MMA fighter so i didnt really realized i had sweaty hands until i had to buckle down and get serious, go do cardio, strenght and conditioning etc. Chalk literally changed my life, i found out later i just have Primary hyperhidrosis, not even a medical issue, literally just a DNA diff lol
It totaly depends on the person and how wet their hands can get. I can manage to sweat off all my chalk on a climb in 4-5 holds. My wife tho has super dry skin, she never uses chalk and even after climbing a 20 move boulder her hands are dry af. Iam convinced that she is a better climber without chalk because of her dry hands, chalk would just make her even more dry which would result in worse performance.
@mrmonsterhunter808
8 ай бұрын
That’s also an indicator your wife isn’t climbing as long as she could. No matter how dry your skin is, eventually you will wear down your layers in a session to the point where your body naturally makes your hands clammy. It’s not necessarily sweat, more so the layer of dead skin is completely grated off.

If the chalk sweating/ rubbing off quickly is a problem, give liquid chalk a try. Powder chalk I reapply after every climb, but liquid I might apply every 30 minutes of climbing.
my climbing greatly improved using chalk purely because i sweat so much, i can sweat my chalk off in just a few holds and without it i was always just slipping off, blistering and injuring my hands
I can't believe you didn't use chalk this whole time
chalk is not only for sweaty hands, its also there to give you more friction than even non sweat hands
Also depends on how much you sweat. I sweat A LOT. Chalk is a must have
It's not just about personal gains, it's also about preserving the holds. Climbing without chalk means holds need to be washed(and fully replaced) more often.
@JeanEdouardKevin

Um actually, as someone who works in climbing i can assure you that it is the opposite
Speaking as a powerlifter, one benefit is that chalk helps absorb moisture if you do sweat, so that you always have a strong grip surface on your hands
You said Magnus and my mind went immediately to chess
Please make mount climbing video just like magnus ❤
This guy looks like he could go toe to toe with the Hulk
Magnus is also very humble
It does depend on how much you sweat, yeah. I could never not use it. I'd slip off of anything 😂
I feel like chalking up my hands is like a ritual that gets me in the right mindset for an attempt. I bet loads of other climbers would feel weird not chalking up for that reason
You don't sweat? Bro climbing for me is like going down a waterslide, I'm constantly having to brush aside the sweat dripping down my face. Even if I barely exert myself, it's like getting caught in a flood.
When you sniff it you can climb the 4th dimension.
You were climbing with Chuck every surface, and that Jim was caked with it
That coefficient of friction is a tricky one.
My palms got sweaty just by watching this
Chalk helps only if you have sweaty hands. The sweatier the more it helps. I have friends that don't need any chalk at all. I slip even from easy routes without chalk. Many beginner refuse to use chalk and don't realize that they make the holds slippery.
@Aashishkebab

This isn't true. Did you watch the video? Chalk helps regardless of whether your hands are sweaty. It absorbs any moisture on the holds.

asian guys don't need as much chalk since they have fewer sweat glands in general.
this feels like one experiment isn’t enough to draw a valid conclusion
Isnt it just to help prevent slipping from sweat?

i never knew your hands could sweat honestly until i touched someone's sweaty hand, as my hands actually psychically cannot sweat at all.
Damn people getting some engine upgrade
I realized thay chalking too much makes me sweat even more. So I climb easy grades without chalk and only use it when i either start to get sweaty or in hard routes
I would not expect that chalk has a linear effect on the performance of people. Also, I don't think the grades raise linearly respect to difficulty.
The thing is there's no such thing as not using chalk except for the first climb. You'll begin to get chalk just from doing climbs since the holds are usually covered in it
I just love Magnus Meatball.
It was very obvious to me that you immediately looked more confident while using the chalk
“No chalk”: Chalk “Chalk”: am I a joke to you?
Well it should scale with percentages or a ratio in this case. Chalk’s kinda like a catalyst but not easy use equipment
as a v10 with chalk id probably be a v1 without it, also bouldering without chalk is so spooky to me
If your doing a friction based climb it’s essential
I’d also be interested in this on a route with clean holds. Does the chalk already on them make grip better or worse
@SunnyMorningPancakes
8 ай бұрын
Brand new fully clean holds are so uncomfortable to climb on its like holding coarse sandpaper and every move you make is microtearing your skin.
@OctagonalSquare
8 ай бұрын
@@SunnyMorningPancakes I mean, true. But the chalk embedded in them still makes a difference. Maybe just some old holds that have been cleaned. So the rough edges of the texture are gone, but the chalk is too
it helps me cos i really struggle with my hands sweating
Proceeds to roll in chalk like a chinchilla
For whatever reason, climbing and watching people climb makes my hands sweat. Its mostly watching people climb though. Seriously, I'll go a full day with my hands being of average moisture, come home and watch a Magnus video only to have my hands be literally dripping by the end.
chalk is the new gaming chair lmao
As a weight lifter and previous rock climber chalk is is like 15% boost on grip strength but the real boost is your hand don’t get sweaty and you can maintain your grip strength.
I don't usually use chalks. My hands haven't started producing noticeable moisture by the end of 90% of climbs. Only when I'm wearing long pants and/or climbing long routes do my hands start to sweat and I wish I had chalk. That being said, sometimes if a hold is already very greasy, I wish I had chalk.
Wait, you're the same guy that just learning handstand and now you're doing this? This is my goal. I watched your video several years before and just doing excercise neatly since last month. Hopefully I am being consistent with my routine and can got to this point.
Had no idea this was the World Chess Champion's hobby
Ah yes, the MT Power drum kit
Chalk is very helpful for baby climbers like me so we can develop calluses faster, therefore gradually increase climbing frequency
any tips for someone with SUPER sweaty hands? Even when using chalk my hands become sweaty just after the half of a small boulder
That percentage increase means you should be climbing v8-v9 which is still in proportion with his v15 down to v10
Magnus is successful is every human endeavor 😂
I sweat so much from my hands that all the chalk i use turns to mud
My hands sweat way too much to do any climbing without chalk lol
i've found that my hand sweat less when I don't use chalk. I've been chalk free for a year or so and It's ok. It helps on high humidity days tho
My hands and feet get coated in sweat just thinking about climbing... I need chalk.
I doesn't climb with chall because I hate how it feels
If you don't sweat, that isn't genetics, its a sign you aren't having enough either sodium, potassium, magnesium or just not enough water. I myself wasn't a sweater for the longest time until I changed mt diet and its a lot healthier for you
Is chalk more or less effective if you have sweaty hands?
Been indoor bouldering for 6 months, my hands never sweat, and I am only now starting to use chalk around v4-v6 level. It doesn't help much on some holds/routes, but others are impossible without it

When every elite level athlete is doing something (in any sport) it’s probably worth while
I climbed with chalk when I went to a rock gym on the regular. Chalk just doesn’t make my hands clammy from being nervous or from the strain of climbing.
There us a lot of residual chalk on the holds, just something to keep in mind. At least at gyms, you've always been climbing with some amount of chalk.
I'm just getting back into climbing after like 5 years, I've never gotten very high level with it, but I have chronically sweaty hands so if I don't use chalk I can't do literally anything
I haven't seen where all he climbs but in this video he is climbing in a gym where his hand holds are covered in chalk
Some people, like me, need chalk to stop our palms from sweating waterfalls. Don’t wanna slip.
Magnus leaves enough chalk behind for the next 10 climbers.😅
My hands tend to get sweaty so chalk helps keep them dry
ok but if cover my body in chalk does that mean i can just roll up the wall?
It literally just depends on how sweaty your fingers are, just use chalk, unless you like slipping off all the time.
You forgot that everything already had chalk on it...
It also means the holds dont get slipery and unholdable
There's chalk all over the holds already on the "no chalk" climb lmao
There is so much chalk on those hand holds that youre basically getting the same effect.
I would think it helps percentage-wise. V10-V15 is a 50% buff. V6-V11 would be almost 100% increase. Granted I have no idea what the V even means because I don't do this, lol. Just some math I thought about. Assuming it's difficulty
How do I start rock climbing?
chalk is the aim assist of grip strength.🗿
The shear amount of residual chalk on the holds…. You’re essentially using chalk
Wow Magnus does chess, poker AND climbing at high levels? What a GOAT
i didnt use chalk for a long time decided to try it one day and it was a game changer
I've got sweaty ass hands, so chalk definitely helps
Depends on if the chalk adds +5 or if it x1.5. In the former, yes, but in the latter you'd actually be 9
Life hack: There’s enough chalk on the walls already 😎they just tryna get you to pay more money
I’m only a v5 climber WITH chalk lol 😂 it’s crazy that he’s gone this long not using any!
i feel like he just hung longer because of the mental effect.
i mean the holds are already caked in chalk 💀
Its not possible to climb without chalk. There's chalk on every hold already xD
Chalk does much more on top rope/lead than boulder
Didn’t know Magnus was good at climbing not just chess rankings but rocky walls too
honestly i just use chalk to not mess up the holds for other guys. only in the gym ofcourse. outside i climb saxon sandstone where its forbidden to use chalk.
Him : climbs V6 without chalk Me : *fails V3 with chalk* I should have put more chalk
I couldn’t ever try some shit like that even with chalk my hands sweat way to much for no reason
i would say it depend on the reason of why you can't pass your level. chalk allow you to slip less due to some grips. And save endurance because you can allow yourself to put less force in your grip without slipping. if those arren't the reason why your fail. or that they don't impact you enougth. Then it won't change anything.
the harder a climb gets the more important the slight advantages are so you will have a grade imrpovement of 2 or 3 whereas somebody at magnus' level around 5 this going off as average person but not sweating would make this do less and sweating a lot would make this do more
I almost don't use any chalk at all. I mostly use it when I'm doing slopper or have to push in some way.
