Same here. It's unreal how good the sleep is now after I quit alcohol!
I’ve been waking up every night at 3 and can’t go back to sleep this all started when I binge drink on weekend alcohol causes me so many problems physically mentally and emotionally I’ve quitter before and life was gd now I’ve decided never again is not worth it one night of fun for 3 4 days of depression
Thanks for pulling this out of the longer interview. I wanted to share this info on alcohol with a loved one.
Matt Walker's audible book "Why We Sleep" is well worth a listen for anyone wanting to dive deeper into all facets of sleep and its impacts. The studies on the effects of alcohol on unborn fetus' was particularly interesting. Just one drink from Mum was enough to impact the REM/NREM sleep of babies with growing evidence to link frequent ingestion to the disruption in the child's development. Going through the journey of reducing (and trying to eliminate) alcohol intake myself and just after a night or two of not drinking the quality of sleep is really noticed. Dreams are way more vivid, feel rested in the morning, feel less anxious. Very thankful that folk like Huberman and Matt Walker are sharing this research so publicly and raising awareness.
Love the podcast and listen weekly on Apple Music. Could you do a series on alcohol and its effects on muscle recovery, hormones, brain and memory? A lot of people in the world drink every week if not everyday. Thanks!
I need to stop drinking. 😞

Did you? You can do it bud, I promise. As someone who quit IV heroin and has been an on and off hard drinker over the years, I promise you can do it. And you'll be better for it.
The true problem for me is couple of days after drinking. The night I drink I sleep very well (at least I think so), but then in the following days I literally nap in the night and am not able to get a good sleep.
SUGGESTIONS: Dr Huberman. Could you please do a whole episode about recreational use of alcohol?

I thought REM sleep was when people dream, which is weird because alcoholism has made my dreams completely insane. Weird, vivid events just happen every single night, when I used to dream rarely. I have frequent nightmares now, and I also fiend for liquor/hide my liquor in my dreams. It truly takes over the human psyche at the most primal level.

Great information that needs to be shared. I've started drinking heavier in the last year or so and I've definitely noticed a struggle in getting a good night's sleep. I'll definitely be reducing/stopping my regular drinking for my own mental sake. Great podcast

Alcohol will negatively effect my sleep quality even for after 1 week of the last intake of a drink in combination of my troubled sleeping patterns during the winter months. I got so sensitive to this throughout the years and it takes about 2 weeks withdrawal to recover from this effect

I agree with your statement....however would you agree that alcohol can effect emotion and anxiety levels? As a result emotional oversensivity from alcohol may be contributing to the entire insomnia stew. It may not be a total solve but abstinence can help some people reduce that anxiety + sensitivity.
You are cute Dr. Huberman. Keep steady kicking butt on your informative videos. Cheers ☕
I get punctured awakaning. I need to quit caffeine to during the day.
Well last night I had approx. 1 standard drink only before bed and had a dream my dad was trying to cut me with a box cutter. So, it affects dreams for sure. Found out my white blood cell count is 2.7 K/uL after blood draw lab examination. Doc typed that is a low amount. Not so low that I can't wait 3 months to do a re-check. My liver function is normal she typed but I read even just occasional above moderate alcohol consumption lowers WBC count so lol UGH I'm quitting alcohol for 3 months well for that long anyways.🤣😂💩👀😱
I don't feel it is helpful that scientists talk about alcohol as if it has agency, a will, an intent.
So I prefer day drinking personally bc I won’t be hungover the next day. But do you think day drinking will still effect my night time sleep quality?

It depends on metabolization. If your body is able to fully metabolize alcohol before sleep, the better the sleep quality. You will have been sober hours before going to bed before this takes place. Matt Walker talks about coffee having a half-life of about 6 - 8 hours. But the quarter-life is around 12 - 14 hours. This varies person to person. However, biologically with alcohol, people will metabolize alcohol at wildly different rates. Tolerance, how much you've had to eat, and natural biology all play a part. So, in many ways, it may be impossible for the average person to gauge how alcohol will affect oneself.

No not at all, its a poor bandaid solution to a bigger deeper problem. There is a ton of information and studies floating around on the internet to help people learn about their sleep and why they might struggle with it, there are also proffessionals that can help you with it. Sure, if you have tried literally every natural or clinical remedy for insomnia/struggle to sleep, maybe you can have that conversation. But the reality is, statements like that are a cop out for people who dont really want to address the problem and would rather a quick fix.
1 single beer affects my sleep even if I drink that beer at 1pm and go to bed at 11pm

Mister Walker, alcohol both in its chemical nature and it's effects is way far away from sedatives, depressant sounds even better than anything that "sedates". But yeah, a bottle of red after a month of brake can potentially make a person both happy and sleepy.

I can’t listen to huberman anymore. He just won’t shut the f up. Just loves to hear himself talk. Don’t believe me? Go to any of his podcast and skip to a random point. It’s hubermsn saying something. Usually repetitive and using tons of words to say very little. Just let the fing EXPERT speak. Rogan has it dialed.

Haha you must be joking but you know 95% of his podcasts are just him covering a subject, not an interview. He is also clear and concise and provides a large amount of content in an efficient manner. Rogan only interviews people.

Unlike Rogan, Huberman is an expert. When he has a fellow neuroscientist on, he's capable of talking on a much higher level. Sure, the guest is bringing a niche expertise, but Huberman undoubted can make meaningful contributions in such instances.
