Dodge Limited Slip diff repair part 1 Inspection How to adjust backlash

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a practical demonstration of how to inspect a Chrysler 9 1/4” Trac Lok limited slip differential in a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500. An axle tube seal is replaced, we adjust ring gear backlash, and we show how the gear contact pattern changes as backlash is reduced. Part 2 is here

I like the way you use 'crap' to describe a bad situation. It makes me feel like we're all in this together. Of course, when I discovered a leak at the rear hub (or any other problem) my language was stronger than that. Owing to the mileage at that time (150,000) the diff place had to use a Speedi-Sleeve before putting a new seal in. That was 160,000 miles ago.

Man i really appreciate your videos. I ran into the same issue excpet it sounded like a massive grenade went off under the truck. Im doing the fix on my own and had no idea of a diff system like that from dodge. Now i know what to look for and what the parts are called. Thanks for the videos

Man your videos are awesome. I really appreciate the depth and complexity you go into, thoroughly explaining everything. I am an avid off-roader and bought a 1998 regular cab 1500 with a manual transmission and was bummed to find out that there is no selectable locker available for the rear. So I might try and repair the factory track lock lsd. I am hoping I can increase the ft pounds of the clutch packs. thanks for the vids. -Christian from Marin co California.

Elegantly simple. I was intrigued by the way torque on the spider gears compresses the clutch packs, sending more power from the spool directly through clutch packs to both legs. The two spider gears are only torqued and spinning when there is a difference in wheel velocity, the rest of the time their whole axis spins on the shaft inside the spool. No extra springs or gears. Not as effective or as durable compared to other designs, but much simpler. Thanks for stopping by!

It's complex and a difficult repair but I suppose it's one of those subjects that is easier to understand once you have time around it. Still it's fascinating.

Hello Dave, great video. Anxiously awaiting the next part! I bought the same truck new in 1998; it's still my daily driver. We seem to run into the same issues around the same time. Two years ago I replaced the rear axle seals for the first time. But I HATE that 9.25" rear axle and will never buy another vehicle that uses it; It's the only part of this truck that's been a headache over the past 23 years and 170,000 miles. Pinion bearings went at 37k mikes. Chrysler covered it under warranty,. They went again at 70k miles. Chrysler told me to pound sand. I paid for that one. Then again at around 110k miles. All done by different dealerships in different parts of the country. I too have the factory trac-loc, but with 3.92 gears. The axle has always made a loud BANG when shifted into reverse since the day it was new. Multiple dealers dismissed it as normal, as did a driveline shop. Did it the same after both pinion bearing replacements. It's so loud, its embarrassing. I've checked it myself, and the play is between the spider and side gears, always has been. My trac-loc started chattering at about 110k miles, only when going around the first few turns while accelerating after driving on the highway. When new, it could transfer a significant amount of power to the slipping wheel. Now, not so much. I know its just worn out. Replacing the Trac-loc is a project that I know is coming, hopefully way down the road, but I'm glad to see you do it first. If you ever need any info from the factory service manual, let me know--I have the printed book. Thanks again!

It's great to find somebody with the same truck. I too bought the FSM right at the beginning. Occasionally I have subscribed to alldatadiy to get updates and TSB's, but I haven't noticed big changes. In retrospect I think I heard a Belleville spring break one day a decade ago while I was in an underground parkade. I heard a sharp bang, then nothing. Sharp turns on a hard surface must be a challenge for LSD. Thanks for documenting your experience here!

if you put a Eaton Truetrac which is a machanical posi which have no discs to wear out. the rear end will go 300,000 plus miles and always keep it ability to have posi.

Mine was whining on coast and LS didn't work. Found play in pinion so I installed all new bearings and upgraded to an Eaton truetrac. The LS parts were on the bottom. It was close to grenading.

Yeah, these trucks whine, it is hard to say what is normal. Back in the late 90's, when I still worked for a living, I hired a pro to swap out the pinion and side bearings. No difference in the whine. Often not noticeable, worst on drive at 40 mph, immediately better on coast, little change over the decade. I'm thinking about doing pinion and side bearings again myself, depending on what I find when replacing the clutch plates. Part of me says to make the extra effort to do the plates first, then see how things change, before messing with the pinion again. Thanks for stopping by, it's always nice to hear from others with the same truck.

I've seen people having problems trying to get the right pattern in the right place and sekecting shims for the correct amount play when both sides mesh together. I don't think i would want to mess with so many variables lol. ill run away ha ha :-D

I have a 2004 Ram 1500, I am trying to replace the rear differential with a junkyard one, but the junkyard part spins both wheel the same direction, is that how a limited slip differential supposed to work on these dodge rear-ends? I thought the old one was limited slip, but that one spins wheels in the opposite direction with the vehicle raised.

  • @spelunkerd

What they don't tell you about that test is the transfer case needs to be in neutral so the propshaft can spin freely. If it's stuck in gear, freezing the propshaft, the opposite wheel always spins the opposite way because it has to, even with an LS diff. In the junkyard the propshaft is disconnected so the test should be valid. When you spin one wheel it becomes a competition between the propshaft spinning with the opposite wheel spinning the same way, OR the opposite wheel spinning the opposite way, and the propshaft not spinning much. Which happens depends on how much mechanical resistance is in each drivetrain pathway. Typically in an LSD the propshaft spins freely and the opposite wheel spins the same way, with the carrier rotating but spider gears are not spinning. It's not a perfect test. Yes, the junkyard part sounds like a limited slip diff. You can find your system by searching for a Chrysler "build sheet" that will spit out details based on your VIN. Or, search for the tag (mine was missing).

Do you torque down both of the adjusters on each side to 75 ft lbs or just one side?

  • @spelunkerd

    @spelunkerd

    Жыл бұрын

I torqued both sides. In my case I put the left side exactly back to where it was, then I moved to the right side, cranked it to where it was, torqued that right side, then went back to the left to finally torque that one. I don't know if it makes a difference as to which one is done first. The pinion connection adds asymmetry to the system, so it might.

I found the part on Alldatadiy for you today, but they do not list a part number, nor is it listed in RockAuto. I did find a photo of that clip last year, I think on Ebay. It was part of a rebuild kit, but you should be able to get it separately. You might check with your local dealer, it can't be very expensive. Just a piece of wire bent in a C shape.
