    My jeep commander is doing the same thing. The sound was coming from the right side rear and sounded like a wheel bearing. I just changed the right side wheel hub and it's still making the noise. I am very mechanical, but this is my only vehicle and I don't want to mess it up so I'm going to have to spend $500-$1000 to have it done by a mechanic. If I had a second vehicle it would be on jack stands and already torn apart and being fixed and saving a lot of money. Thank you for the great video.

    Hey man I used your video to repair my 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 rear differential and it was just great. The special custom made tool worked very well and was easy to make. I modified it by putting a Tee fitting on the end, with a 12" x 1/2'; nipple. Thanks for the three video's . You mentioned doing another video on complete rebuild, but was not able to find it. Thanks again.

This is an excellent video and you can purchase the Side Bearing adjustment tool / Pre-Laod wrench on Amazon for 45.34 plus shipping. A good place for parts is Rock Auto. I live in Mx and they can ship here cheap and within a few days. Excellent stuff but only internet sales.

    if you keep those adjuster clips on the brackets (but loose), then you will know which is right and left or top and bottom. I have a 2004 Ram 1500. Dealership service techs said my rear axle was used from 2003-2007. How do I find out (1) what the torque specs and preload are for my pinion nut and threaded adjusters? (2) Backlash specs? (3) how does one know how to adjust the pinion depth, on reinstallation, so it isn't too far in or out? Thanks soooo much for the video series, and the tool video. Priceless!

    Your video is very well done in layman terms and explains the source of the noise. My "noise" is different. It is a rhythmic higher pitch squeal. It only occurs when turning especially from a stop, going forward or reverse. It seems to completely go away when going straight (fwd or rev). I have heard this same noise in other Dodge trucks but no one seems to have a solution. The sound is a nasal uuunncchh (pause) uuunncchh (pause) ..... and speeds up as the truck goes faster (only in a turn). ANY ideas would be very much appreciated. Oh, also, this has been going on for over 6 months and is just recently getting much louder. Thank you for your time.

    +Notlaw47 sounds like a u joint. Sounds like it could be both rear u joints or maybe just one. I'd replace both just to be safe. Put your truck in neutral and get under it and try to rotate your driveshaft, if there is a ton of give and it rotates back and forth pretty far, it's definitely a u joint. There should only be a little give.

    What an informative series of videos! They gave me the confidence to tackle what seemed to be a really difficult job. All jas gone smoothly so far....I am just at the point where the re-assembly is about to begin. The only difference Inhave found so far is that there is no mention of the clutch-pack. There was no way the spider gears were going to come out like they did in the video with the clutch pack in place. The spider gears couldn’t be turned by hand ( I am assuming that this is die to the pressure aplied vy the clutch pack. One clip was loose but everything else in the pack looked good so I left it alone. Was your differential unusual in that it had no clutch pack?

    My truck is making a high pitched whirring noise starting when it hits 20mph. As soon as i step on yhe gas when im anywhere above 20mph, the sound starts. The faster I go the higher pitched the sound goes. If I let off the throttle, the sound stops. As soon as I step on it, the sound starts again starting with a slight rattle sound when I barely press my foot down. Researched a little and it sounds like carrier bearing or pinion bearing. Anybody have any idea? I need help. It's my daily and I can't even drive it now without fear of destroying something.

    There's a better way to get the ring gear out than loosening the adjusters. If you don't loosen the adjusters, then you don't have to re-adjust them. You get two wrenches to fit the ring gear bolts. You put the box end on a ring gear bolt, and let the ring gear turn until the wrench rests against the bottom part of the housing. Then put the other wrench on a different bolt near the top of the ring gear. Pull on the top wrench, rolling the ring gear carrier out of it's saddle. I don't let anyone help me with this, as a helper may smash your fingers, or drop the ring gear on your foot, your face, what have you. The wrenches will not loosen the bolts, the ring gear will come out before you put enough torque to loosen the bolts. Use a bump stick, or the butt of your wooden hammer handle to bump the ring gear back into place during assembly. No adjustment should be needed for just replacing the bearings.

  • @robertgantry2118

    @robertgantry2118

    8 жыл бұрын

    Kevin Vastlik You pull kinda outward. There may be something preventing you from doing it this way, I don't know. But it's always worked for me. The wrench on the top, the one you're pulling on, should be as much at an upward angle as possible. The diff carrier should just kinda roll out of it's saddle.

    You know your stuff with that differential. But, your camera has focal limitations. When you put things you want us to see too close to the camera, we see a blur instead of the pits you are trying to show us. Your camera might have a "macro" mode you can switch into and focus closer than normal mode. Otherwise, great video.
