Dodge Cummins Starter Removal -- EASY!

New Starter: amzn.to/33WDSND
Tools I use:
Milwaukee 3/8" M12 Impact (bare tool) - amzn.to/3Etyxyt
Milwaukee 3/8" m12 Impact (kit) - amzn.to/2ZuUDBe
Milwaukee 3/8" Ratchet - amzn.to/3Bp4ru3
Milwaukee 1/2" Impact - amzn.to/3GtNUIU
Milwaukee Flashlight - amzn.to/3EtzeI5
Milwaukee Fuel Combo Kit - amzn.to/3w0ZVRq
I am in no way sponsored by Milwaukee, I am just a huge fan of their tools. It really helps this channel by purchasing through the product links I provide, thank you.
Upon further research it has come to my attention that this removal process will apply for the years '89-07 5.9L Cummins, not just '94-'07. This video was going to be apart of my starter rebuild video, hence why I originally put '94-'07.

How to remove the starter on your Dodge Cummins. This removal is the same process for most Dodge Cummins from 89-07. This is Part I of a two part series, the next part I will show you how to fix the contact points, and completely clean and re-grease the starter on your 89-07 Cummins. Hope this video helps, Enjoy!

Thanks, pretty easy for you. I’m just swapping mine out, maybe I should keep the core and try to rebuild it like you. You made it look easy.

The 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 has the power cable to the battery on top of the starter I believe.

A quick little help with the removal. If you remove the 3 mounting bolts with a 12 point wrench, I had to smack the wrench with a 5lb sledge, you can barely pull the starter free and tilt it down so you can get to the 15mm nut that holds the power cable, I couldn't get the rubber boot off until i unbolted the starter and then I could get my hand in there to pull it back far enough I could get a wrench on the nut, at this point you only have the signal wire attached so you can rotate the starter even more so you can get your fingers in there and release the plastic connector, to release the connector push down on the top of the connector and it will slide right apart. I could not get my fingers in there to push down until I unbolted the starter and rotated it. reinstallation was quick and easy after the hell I went through getting it out. good luck, hope this helps. here are the website addresses: www.LarryBs.com www.startercontacts.com 1-253-225-9962 They have the contacts with the Plunger for $35, which is what I did, or full on rebuild kits.

HOPE THIS HELPS OTHERS.... I see you're in the club to... Watching yt videos were people don't show it getting wormed out. Just "ta-dah" and then a brief explanation. I've used every magical curse word I can but I have a feeling I'm going to have to remove the tranny lines. Really sucks doing it in the dark with half-ass explanations on the most important part, on how it's done. It's disconnected (easy part) I just got to figure out how to get it out 🤷 tomorrow when it's daylight because it's not happening tonight😡. Update: you don't have to remove the trans lines, you just have to put a jack under "the truck" not the axle and raise it up 3 inches off the suspension then it easily comes out right next to the control arm. Nothing additional to remove, no fighting it, no Rubik's cube moment, it just falls right out and the new one right in. I couldn't see this in the dark and only took me a few minutes to see the next day. This would have been immensely useful knowledge beforehand in any video and i could have finished it that night. Hope this update helps someone else. Block under the frame, raise it 3in... And that's it. That's the magic sauce 😁👍. Also it's easier to remove your wires after you drop it and before you bolt in the new. I figure most of you would figure that out as you will only have room to reach one. Just save the frustration and drop the whole thing then worry about the wires, install in verse order. If I ever had to do this again I know that it's going to be about a half hour job. Hopefully this helps you in both time and any frustration.

I am glad your top bolt was that loose. The top bolt on mine was so tight that I could not get it loose. On mine there wasn't enough room for a ratchet either, only a 10mm boxed end wrench and straining with all I had it still never moved. My starter has not failed yet , but I was going to go ahead and replace it while I had the transmission out. I wasted too much time messing with it and finally gave up for now.

Yeah I got really lucky. I just did my tranny not too long ago too, its not too bad of a job. Wish i woulda filmed it because there isn't very many good videos on how to do it. Also with your starter I recommend rebuilding it, its really easy and I made a walk though on it. The factory starters are way better than starters you would get at any auto parts store, and I spent only $30 doing it. Thanks for watching!

I would have spent more time on it, but I was ready to get the transmission back in the truck and tired of dealing with it. All three bolts were crazy tight, but the other two were in a position where I could slide a pipe over the wrench to break them loose. My truck has 235,000 miles on and the starter looks to be in pretty bad shape. The casing appears to be rusted really bad, I had planned on trying to clean it up and repaint the casing when I rebuilt it, but I need the truck and didn't have time to keep messing with it yesterday. I'm not a small person and even the two I could get a pipe over the wrench were not easy to get loose. It will probably take a breaker bar to get that top one loose, but I will deal with that when it quits working.

I bought new starter and for a day it worked like a dream. But next morning it had the same problem. Started just fine, but it kept spinning. I took neg cables off in a hurry and as soon i set one cable back to battery, the starter spins and truck fires up. .. waited a while, then connected negs and all fine. Started and same problem. Removed starter relay and again i connect negs with relay and keys at my pocket... still starter spins and fires up... well decided to drive home i wasnt too far away... less than a mile of driving, starter stops and now again it works just fine like it should. So... where should i look for the problem? Hard to find since Its not doing it now... could it be That new starter was bad to begin with... or? 2500 and year 1995

if it's not a faulty starter it might be something to do with your ignition if I had to guess. the starter could be recieving signal from the remote wire to start. if it happens again disconnect the remote wire and see if your getting 12v to it. you should only see 12v to the remote wire when you actually turn the keys to start the motor. for some reason it was getting a constant 12v and that could be why the starter was spinning constantly. if you test the remote wire and it checks out then yeah you could have gotten a faulty starter. might be some good info on cummins forum

Just did mine. Took me 40 minutes to get to the store, buy it, uninstall old one, and install new one. NOTE: The bolts from my 94 Cummins are 12 point bolts. I was able to do the whole job with a 10mm wrench from underneath. Just don't strip the bolts, guys, or you'll be sorry. Be patient and use penetrating oil if need be.
