    I love my super clean and mean 09 R/T. One of my quirks which has been verified by dealer via housing tag is that my 5.7 auto came equipped with a lsd although not stated on build sheet. Had an 08 charger. Until I went with the eibach sports springs I felt like it just didn't ride safe for as fast as it was. Ended up selling it to a friend. Just bought a 15 sublime green challenger rt with the super track pack. Owned by some lady laywer, pretty nice car. I didn't want to buy it because it was the automatic, and I'd driven the 5 speed auto and didn't like it. I love the 8 speed. It's amazing, amazing. I love the seats in the 15, they are so much nicer than the 08, but mostly because of the cooled seat feature. I wasn't even thinking about buying it. I went to the dealership to order a new truck, I ordered the truck and saw the lady trading it in on a new trx. I came back to the dealership to look at it all weekend. Came in the next Monday and bought it. I love the car. It's just great.

    I picked my 2013 RT up right before the winter. Originally on the market for a 2015+ but when I saw this one I threw an offer because it was clean low mileage, with the right options. Have to say I believed the BS about the awful interior until I tested it. It was just as you said. Comfy and simple. Like you the car is stored for the winter. But I also don’t like resorting to saying for a car to be a muscle car it can’t handle well. The high power V8 rear drive is a big part of what makes a muscle car, but a lot of it is about style and attitude too. Muscle cars both from the late 60s/70s or modern ones aren’t subtle, and that’s a big part of their charm.

    A very enjoyable video. It's interesting that you mentioned the early - mid 2000's when there was a lull in performance and choices. It is why I bought a 2001 Trans Am new way back then and I still own it today. The same with the retro Mustang as I own a 2007 GT/ CS with that 4.6L 300 HP engine. The 5 speed manual makes it a blast to drive as the power range is impressive in the higher RPM's. I also still own that car. Back in November I bought a new '20 Challenger R/T with the Shaker package and many of the performance options. It's the perfect fit with my other rides. It is very close in performance to my Trans Am The 62 HP difference (310 vs 372) is probably negated by the weight difference. The speed and acceleration are PLENTY for me. My cars never see the track and all I ask is for quick spirited driving when I'm in the mood. The Challenger R/T certainly delivers that.

  • @TrackPackRT

    @TrackPackRT

    3 жыл бұрын

    I have always had a huge soft spot for the Trans Ams (still have an 81 actually), I remember back in the day the WS6 in 2002 rated for 325hp was considered pretty insane performance. Today people turn up their nose at any car in the 300 hp range. Once Pontiac died and when they weren’t doing the greatest in the mid 2000s it didn’t seem like there was a lot to choose from if you were into performance cars.

  • @01TA

    @01TA

    @@TrackPackRT I guess many folks take 300 HP engines for granted, but that sure wasn't the case in the past. I was around when the initial muscle car era existed and devolved into 185 HP Corvettes which were offered in 1978. The well respected 340 4 bbl engine in the '70 Challenger was rated at 275 hp and the '6 pack' was 290 hp. Yes, the cars were definitely lighter but 300 hp was always a big deal. The 383 Magnum put out 335 and that was a WOW back then. I owned a '74 'Cuda with the 360 (245 hp) and it was quick. I enjoyed it. My current Challenger reminds me a lot of that car. Good times! Thanks for the reply.

I really like the all black appearance inside and out on these cars the only parts that were not black were the lug nuts?? I found that odd so I ended up switching to black ones. I also changed the tires to Continental Extremecontact 245 on the front and 275 on the back to give it a little more aggressive look. Nice vid, thanks. Like you I have a black 2009 Challenger R/T 6 speed. I took delivery in February 2009 and still have it. Unlike your R/T my tac does have a red line starting at 5700. I read that Dodge was using Mercedes parts in some of the Challengers so that may be the reason for the discrepancy. I have the 18" wheels and the rear end ratio is 3.73. If the buyer opted for the 20" wheels than the ratio is 3.92. If the buyer ordered the 6 speed Dodge would include a limited slip, aluminum pedals and a variable speed power steering pump. Funny how the automatic trans was standard and the 6 speed was a $995 option. Again, thanks for the vid, very informative.

    Great video, very well done. I own a "17" SRT 392 with a 6spd manual. I have upgraded the shifter to a Barton unit and it is incredible. I choose the SRT because of all the upgrades that came standard. YES, save the manuals. I realize that the automatic is a little faster but with the Barton shifter and providing I do my job I haven't given up much, on the street anyway. I grew up during the days of the factory Super Stocks and idolized the drivers of that era. Runny Sox, Dick Landy, Paul Richardson, Don Grotheer, Shirley Shahan and others were masters of the 4 speed. But I will admit that there are times when a automatic would be nice. Nothing worse than a 5:00 big city traffic that is nothing but stop and go.

    Have a 2013 rt classic edition the best car I've ever had

  • @cranstjs

    I just bought a 2019 RT that has the performance package. As I understand it, this includes upgraded springs, shocks, anti sway components, performance-tuned steering and sport-tuned suspension (lowered by 0.5 inches), and features Bilstein® shock absorbers and high-performance brakes. And it has 1 inch larger 275 vs 245 tires and one inch wider. In essence lowering it 1/2 inch compensates for the one inch taller tire, which raises it a 1/2 inch. I drove an RT about 8 years ago and I can tell you this one is night and day a whole lot stiffer. It's fine on highways, but on back roads, you can get a headache from the more harsh response. IMO, it's not really the kind of thing you would want for the home driver. I can't find a list of the specific components that they modified the car with so I can understand the specifics and possibly alter it to soften up the ride.

    Often when a car is lowered the ride becomes a lot more harsh, is there a chance it was lowered?

  • @cranstjs

    @cranstjs

    9 ай бұрын

    @@TrackPackRT As I mentioned, it is lowered 0.5" to the axle, and raised 0.5 inches with the 1 inch bigger tire diameter. But that 0.5" lowering of the coil yes is enough to make it more harsh. Reading a forum thread about several people discussing this, you get a mixture of some people who don't car that it's harsh and some people that do. Generally speaking, compared to every car I've owned for 45 years, it is the the most harsh I've had and all I want to do is try to get some springs that are a bit more conservative for street use. Going to a mopar page for parts (moparpartsgiant) if you go to suspension front for a 2019 RT you will find like 8 choices of shocks and 15 choices of springs with no discrimination of peformance or standard or whatever.

    I just rewatched this video as I'm at a crossroad dilemma with my 09 R/T. Do I begin down the road of modding or trade for an SRT8 or 15+ R/T to get the 8 spd? You reminded me of the locked PCM which I'd forgotten about. So thats worth considering. I really am stupid I owned a 2014 SRT8 Challenger which I sold 3 years ago as at the time I wanted to trim the budget. Then when the opportunity to get another came out I figured the R/T performance was enough, turned out not so much. So now im considering either 3:73/3:92 gears (auto) 392 intake manifold, diablo tune, likely headers or just trade? I do like my 09 though. Something interesting about my 09 that wasnt in your video is that its a special late model year release called B5 Classic edition. It came with the classic wheels, functional hood vents, classic badging and blue stitched seats similar I guess to how the 2011 Green with envy R/T classic came with green stitched seats. Back in the day I also had a 2008 B5 blue SRT8 charger superbee so when I saw this classic R/T the colour and styling sang to my soul lol. Now seeing that you've already been down this road what would you do or advise to someone just considering the journey? Thanks I really enjoy your channel. Oh btw I also owned a silver 1981 Pontiac Trans am. My 1st car I bought when I was 18.

  • @TrackPackRT

    @TrackPackRT

    6 ай бұрын

    That's interesting! I don't think I knew there was a special B5 with matching seat stitching. This is going to be a long winded response so I apologize in advance. At the end of the day it really depends on what your goals are and how you use and view your car. If you're really missing your 392 power (I can't blame you) and if all you want to do is headers, gears and maybe an intake swap on your current 5.7 it'll get you to around 6.1 Hemi numbers, but not 6.4 numbers. You'd need at least a cam as well, or going supercharged (which would put you quite a bit above 392 numbers). Having said that if you love the car, doing cool build on it is a way to really make it your own and if done well will make your car stand out big time. If you're thinking modded 09 R/T vs stock '15 R/T for the 8 speed, to me it would depend on long term goals for the car. Off the bat the modded 09 would be more fun probably, but that 8 speed is pretty great, if you were planning on modding the 8 speed car way down the road when it's paid off it might be better to play the long game. If not, the gearing change and mods will wake the 09 car up quite a bit. As far as the 08-14 vs 15+ debate, I love all versions of the Challenger, I think the updated interior is pretty sweet and I love the interior gauges. But I also really love my interior (minus the steering wheel, looking to update that here soon). The gauges in the 08-14's aren't as flashy as the new ones, but they recreate the original 70 challenger gauges better (just a 4 pod of gauges). And something about the white faced gauges reminds me of having old muscle cars with autometer gauges replacing the factory ones, it's nostalgic to me in a way. So I think both are great. One huge plus for me is I like the fact that the 08-14 cars don't seem to be absolutely everywhere like the 15+ cars are. Having something a little less common that stands out a is cool in my eyes. I know with the build I have on my car right now I wouldn't even consider trading it for a newer 392 car. It would feel like I was going backwards. My build really did turn out amazing so far, and it stands out everywhere I go. However it is a little different because both generations had the same 6 speed transmission that's in my car, so it's a wash for me there. The 8 speed auto upgrade really is a big advantage, however from an acceleration standpoint I'd be curious how a re-geared 5 speed stacks up against a stock 8 speed. The end of the day, I guess the answer is it depends on a lot of things. haha sorry man.

    Any 2013-14 R/T owners? Would appreciate some advice lol - I’m looking at getting a challenger R/T but am unable to decide what year to settle on. I found several 2012-2014 and a couple 2015’s. I’ve read on them, an seen that 2012 is the “worst” year model, and 13-14 aren’t much better. The 2015’s have better article support, but the deals on the 2013-14 R/T’s are really nice, so I wanna know if y’all think they are still worth getting? What are the main issues y’all have had? Reliability? I feel like a lot of the reviews are a bit harsh, and they don’t take into consideration that every car will eventually need work, and even if well maintained, issues can still pop up, it’s just about deciding what issues you are will to navigate through. 6 speed performance has been pretty consistent throughout this generation. Same transmission the whole way through, no real changes on the non MDS 5.7s. The gears were always the 3.92 the entire time. The only thing that changed was the rear diff got upgraded in 2015 and 09-10 had the pulleys a different distance from the block than other years and 2014 was also the last year you could tune your car without buying a new ecu, so if you want to mod it, even slightly, it will be easier and slightly cheaper for you.

They do have mds but that’s not really a bad thing, some people speculated that mds was responsible for eating camshafts due to lifter failure but that’s not really true, it has to do with low oil pressure at idle, so excessive idling (like hours on end) will make these cars more likely to have the problem, although it is a small percentage of 5.7s that get that problem. I’d say listen to the engine, if it’s not excessively noisy you’re probably good. The 5.7 is pretty bulletproof and the nag1 transmission in the earlier cars (which is actually a Mercedes transmission) rarely have issues.

    When it comes to the Challenger R/T, I think the most important consideration is whether you want a manual or an automatic. If you go with the manual, they're all 6 speeds and have limited slip differentials. In that case, I would go with what I thought was the best deal for the money. Although Dodge did make some refinements the differences between the model years, they wouldn't make enough of a difference to eliminate one car from consideration. With the autos, it's a different story. I wouldn't consider a Challenger with the NAG1 transmission. There is a big difference in performance between the 8 and 5 speed Challengers. I know that from racing them at the dragstrip. The 8 speed is about .4 seconds faster in the quarter mile. The NAG1 has a 3.66 to 1 ratio in 1st gear compared to 4.71 in the 8 speed. The 5 speed is much lazier out of the hole. That can be made up by doing a gear swap to a 3.70 or 3.90 gear. However, the fuel economy suffers considerably. The 8 speed has much more low end grunt and two overdrive gears with the 8th having a final drive ratio of .67 vs .85 for the NAG1. The 8 speed is a much better transmission. Better throttle response, performance and fuel economy are what would do it for me. My first choice would be the Scat Pack. I know that technically the Scat Pack is a different trim package for the R/T. Most consider the Scat Pack and R/T different models. I think Scat Pack is a better deal for the money. The Scat Pack has a more powerful engine, better brakes, launch assist, launch control, driving modes, limited slip differential, and a standard high-performance suspension system with Bilstein shocks as standard equipment. However, if I had limited funds or could get a better deal on the R/T, I would consider it. In that case, I would add the Edelbrock e-Force supercharger and a limited slip differential if it didn't have one and be quite happy with the car.

  • @TrackPackRT

    @TrackPackRT

    The 8 speed is definitely the better transmission for sure of the 2 autos. If you had the 5 speed though a trans tune can go a long way to making the transmission something you’ll be a lot happier with. I remember as the 8 speeds were just coming out all the guys who had the 5 speed autos were scoffing at them, saying that they 5 speed was better anyways. Haha those forum posts didn’t age too well.

    ...the new gen ( 2008 onwards) challengers r way sexier and better than the original ones. I adore the orange srt 8 from 2008-09 . Super sexy , wide , long body , those sexy 5 spoke 19" wheels and that long hood along with those deep set gauges and headlamps etc.😍😍😍😍😘😘😘....but I did not like the changes that they made in later varients eg. Changed instrument cluster, lamps etc .😥😥😥

    The fastest muscle cars today do far out perform the fastest muscle cars of the 60's and 70's, BUT! There were absolutely factory cars that ran 12's, bone stock, on super shitty, super thin Bias Ply tires.

    The dashes in the older ones like the 2010s are just terrible compared to the new ones. I wonder if you can get an old one like a 2010 and can convert it to like a 2016 interior

    They are definitely a lot more plain, but they have their own charm about them that I also like. They are more similar to the original 70 Challenger gauge clusters if you compare the 2 interiors where it's a simple 4 gauge cluster like the original. The 15+ gauges are a lot more stylish and I'm a huge fan of the font and textures they use on them, I thought Dodge did a great job on the updated interiors. At the same time, the old school muscle car fan in me likes the 08-14 ones as well. Even the fact that the gauges are white in the 08-14's kind of reminds me of how you'd swap auto meter gages into an old muscle car. However, don't get me started on the 08-10 steering wheels. 😒

    You my friend forgot to mention that Ford finally got their act together in 2003-2004. They released a legendary car the 03-04 Cobra@385hp it gave us F-body guys a real run for our money. I was driving a 2002 Firehawk at the time (still have it) and man were they a challenge. Oh and don't forget the Lighting. I have been a GM guy my entire life and have driven some of the hottest cars they have ever made. I liked the Dodge Challenger so much I just bought a 2017 yellow and black RT+P. The car is truly a master stroke in design as it is the last car left that shows its roots. The Camaro and Mustang look like they're European in design...and I don't like it. My one and only gripe is Dodge did not push the Challenger RT into the 400hp range like they should have. Don't worry my car isn't staying at 375hp for long and it's about to lose a ton of weight in the process. Addendum- I know the feeling about people checking your car out everywhere you go. My 25th Anniversary Trans-Am looked so radically different with the paint/rims/interior all matching most had never seen something like it before. I would get tons of questions about it. My Firehawk experience was a lot like that as well. I miss the days when I could buy a mean as Hell Trans-Am. Although I shudder to think what GM would do if they made one now.
