@@philipjohnston5822 Yeah I don't think the parents wanted this to happen. I think this proves you should listen to healthcare professionals because they did go to school to be in this profession. ( Also you should almost always get a second opinion because doctors etc can make mistakes.

Not a doctor but during a conversation with my mom about a science project I was doing in school, the project was something to do with researching and writing about antibiotic resistant bacterial infections. Mom looked at me like I was stupid and said "infections are not living organisms There's no way this is real, why is your teacher grading you for a made up assignment?" I then had to explain what bacteria are and that they are in fact living organisms lol

Not a doctor, but during my moms ankle surgery I 'over heard' a man screaming at the women at the desk because his daughters surgery was cancelled. From the yelling, it sounded like despite doctors orders, they got her mcdonalds on the way to surgery. The women was trying to explain not wanting the daughter to die on the rable, and the dad was shouting about letting his daughter go hungry would be abuse. Security, and police had to be called. It was a very interesting way to pass a few minutes while waiting for moms surgery to be over. Moms went well, and she still has full use of both ankle and foot 12 years later.

@@onionbubs386 he might have been missquoting, what that generally means is the more you know, the more you realize there is to know. Sort of like going from making instant ramen and thinking that's the only kind of ramen anywhere ever, and you know all about making undoctored ramen. Then learning to doctor it, and just how elabirate that can get, and suddenly it spans into making it from scratch, and you could spend your whole like doing nothing but learn to make ramen and never learn or master everything there is to learn and master. Education teaches us just how little we actually know, which I find inspiring, because there is always more that can be achieved

@@fleurpouvior2967 oh no, I get what you mean, the Dunning Krueger effect shows how more educated people are aware of all the knowledge out there they haven't learned yet while less educated people assume everything is simple and easy to explain. This guy was the latter. I was talking about how physical harm is a poor way to punish children and stated my experience as someone who's worked in childcare for two decades and am a little over a year until getting MSW to become a child therapist. He straight up said that my input is unreliable because I'm in grad school and therefore "just trying to get money from parents". And said that he knows more about healthcare than a doctor who went to school for 12 years.

the not eating thing before surgery is clearly a problem. they stressed it out so many times when i had my surgeries a while ago... but not once did they explain WHY it was so imortant. like i personally know the reason but man im sure it would help people take it more serious if they had any context or reason

I've certainly been told why more than once, but also certainly not every time. It needs to be every time. You can't count on people knowing it already.

@@jonesnori I have to say that I have never been told why either. I trusted that there was a good reason, but they really SHOULD specify what can happen if you eat before surgery. Pretty sure that would scare most people into following the order.

Unfortunately even giving a reason won't stop some people from completely disregarding it. When I was working in endoscopy we explained to every patient beforehand why exactly they needed to be sober. Not only due to the aspiration risk but also because we wanted to look at their stomach from the inside, which we couldn't accomplish if it was filled with food. Still, so many people would show up to their exam, reassure us that they're sober upon asking, be put under anaesthesia to get a camera shoved down their throat and whoops, there's a pile of spaghetti.

@FarHowling I assume you're translating from another language, because I would take "sober" to mean that I had not drunk anything alcoholic, rather than that I had not eaten or drunk anything at all. I think I would say "fasting" for that.

When my dad was dying of brain cancer he had to be food restricted as he got near the end. His swallowing ability was very degraded. Family and friends kept bringing him snacks and drinks and sneaking them to him (despite a huge sign asking for nothing by mouth). When the hospital staff found out the orders for visitors changed. Anyone coming in now had to be accompanied by my mom, myself, or a close friend. My mom was a nurse, the friend was a RPN, and I was the daughter of 2 nurses. They trusted us to put a stop to it. We damn well did and put the fear of god into anyone who had snuck him food/drink before. Do not mess around with feeding orders!!!

about the child with respiratory arrest because of aspiration story.... the sad thing [beyond the obvious] is that there is a decent chance the child WAS getting hydration & nutrition. in the ICU, it's relatively common for patients to be tube fed, or rely on TPN as well as IV hydration. its reccomended that patients who are at a high risk for aspiration, pneumonia, or other serious respiratory issues have a feeding tube placed [post-pyloric] so it's likely the child was still getting some kind of nutrition and the family did not understand what was going on [or they never had somebody explain it to them, which is also possible]

I'm glad my parents and grandma listened to the doctors (and me) when I came out of cholecystectomy surgery. I spent so long being unable to keep food down due to the gallstones that not eating just wasn't a problem for me to not want food afterwards. I just wanted sleep, peace and quiet, which thankfully my caretakers respected. It's both heartwarming and saddening that so many cultures promote the use of giving food to the sick as a way to make them feel better, but the medical field finds that it's not always a good idea to do that. And the ignorant just can't understand that no one is denying the patient food "for yucks." They wouldn't be doctors if that were the case.

Actually, masturbation CAN decrease complications. Its a weird way to prevent prostate complications but the worst thing a dry candle can do is cause... infection?

I had to get a prescrip recently; I don't usually get sick, but you know, it happens, and I was feeling gods-awful enough to go to the doc. She told me to make sure I took the entire thing even if I was starting to feel better, and I was so confused because _obviously_ you take the whole thing _unless_ otherwise instructed. This vid has enlightened me to the fact that there are people out there who think that if symptoms are gone, medication is no longer needed.

The teacher needing to be told about germ theory needs to be prevented from teaching anyone. Ever again.

The next time someone in the medical field asks you a question or tells you something that makes you feel like an idiot, please refer to this video. There is a legitimate reason!

When my brother was in surgery, he wasn't allowed to eat or drink. I was 5 and so excited to bring him these cool drinks (formed like a teddy bear) AFTER he was allowed to drink again.

16:16 I had a dog that really loved blueberries but we would never feed her more than two or three at a time and she would only get them once in a while. But a 10-piece nugget meal every day is crazy.

Some of these could be avoided if doctors explaiend why they give "silly" orders, like do not feed your brain damaged kid or he will die from the food going in his lungs because he cannot swallow properly because his brain is broken. Tragic. People think they know better.

What's frightening & maddening about these is that much of the ignorance would be forgiveable if we we talking about poor, uneducated tribal people, but most of these horror stories come from the USA. It's inexcusable.

For heaven's sake that's all you want in the hospital is some good books to escape with.

Had to explain to the surgeon while mother was knocked out that you do not get pregnant in the breasts. She was in for a port insertion and tumour removal in the left breast. 6:17 Doctor pescribed me to start taking two Metformin on really bad mornings after 3 months.

When it comes to story number 21 the part where they reference a guy who was eating meal, spoons and stuff, it sounds like a kiss a pica, which is a medical disorder where people are drawn in assistant on eating non-edible items. It can also be found alongside diagnosis of autism, not all the time, but the people who are on the autism spectrum, who also tend to have a pica diagnosis, but you also can have a packet diagnosis about an autism one.

As far as the elderly person(s) not knowing, x had sugar or that you do have to take your medication, i can almost guarantee at least some of those are real. My paternal grandparents are at the point in their lives where they, unfortunately, have to take a boatload of medications for a variety of ailments, including diabetes for my grandmother. They have no sense of time to the point where they can't tell if it's night or day and legitimately think any form of pain medication is like asprin, which (on top of my aunt and her f-buddy "helping") is a genuinely scary combination on its own. As far as my grandmothers diabetes, she's one of those grannies with random chocolate in her marry poppins purse and a glucose number in the 200s isn't bad for her, which, knowing her medical history, she got into the 400s and was legitimately 20-30% off the charts so it's a genuine miracle she's still with us at all and I'm genuinely grateful to still have them.

I could barely focus on the stories, watching the guy fail at playing spyro that hard was taking my attention lol

I wonder how many people who would rather take medical advice from a random stranger, Dr Google etc, than a trained doctor would take the same approach with their car, or getting a home extension built? Back in 2019 I had a small surgery - but they had to put me out for a couple of hours and I had the instructions to not eat or drink for a certain number of hours befor the surgery start time. Morning of, the doctor asks me about this and I reply that I followed the directions given, as he has MD after his name and I do not. Surgery went off without a hitch.

When I broke out into a rash and called my mom about it, I at least had the sense to take a picture and text it to her.

Eating the spoons and forks and knives, is common for people who love to have surgery. Some people are actually addicted to having surgery because they love the attention.

I would be taking many of these stories to the press (identifying information redacted, of course) to serve as a PSA.

I've had crowns since 2008. They usually stay on just fine, but every single time I eat sticky candies the crowns pop off. Every dentist that I have had since 2008 stubbornly insists that I can eat whatever I want, specifically including sticky candies, without it affecting the crowns. I don't know if they are lying or just *extremely* ignorant about the basic functionality of their own products, but time and again I have found that their advice absolutely does not work! It has been a long time now since I have eaten sticky candies, but this topic occasionally comes up during dental appointments and they *still* insist that sticky candies never pull off crowns. I don't think those dentists realize how badly it hurts their credibility every time they tell me something that is so blatantly untrue. It doesn't matter if the crowns have been on for a day or a week or a month or five years, if I eat a tootsie roll or a jolly rancher they *ALWAYS* pop off.

God, do i know people like in some of these stories... They will constantly complain about the local hospital, how the doctors there know nothing and make every issue worse... And yet they never EVER follow the doctor's instruction, even if that instruction is "stay in the bed, because this special IV is in a main artery, and if you walk it can come loose and you could friggin bleed to death" She survived, but for god's sake...

I mean I was on some serious meds and out of my mind when I woke up and thought the government had captured me and was going to experiment on me so I jumped over the gurney railing and tried to run...in the process my catheter and what I later apparently called a butt catheter was ripped asunder from my body. They held me down and forcefully shoved then back in all the while complaining at my yelling cause "well its your fault we have to put them back isn't it!"...I remind you I was heavily sedated and delusional from the oceanic amount of drugs they had me on. That nurse was a bitch. Most of the nurses their were very nice though. Needless to say my government abduction delusion was even worse after that. Luckily they just shot me full of WAAAAAAAYYYY more drugs and I woke up 3 weeks later in another hospital. My second drug induced delusion that time was awesome though. I thought the buff black guy nurse was a stereotypical hot female Asian nurse in a sexy nurse outfit. Don't remember what I said but im pretty sure it was quite inappropriate
