Star Wars was the utter definition of a money tree. The fans were hungry for good stories and shouting, "Take my money!". Disney could have been making billions from that franchise and the river of cash could have kept flowing for decades. Now star Wars is a diseased Bonsai tree. It was bad, but, bad doctors have been bad already anyway. I think it’s funny he’s popped out as a black gay man, he’s done some bad doctoring in my opinion, and (did you catch what I said already), there’s been plenty of first seasons that started out on a tilt. As a kid in the 90's I remember if you liked Dr Who, Star Wars or Star Trek you were deeply uncool

RTD doesn’t understand Doctor Who. He drags it down to a soap opera fantasy level. The whole point of the Doctor is he’s an eccentric outsider who doesn’t fit in and doesn’t behave in a very human emotional way. The whole tone is also off with an incredibly silly, goofy vibe and lacks the sinister grit that Doctor Who used to have. Doctor Who used to be a pioneer but now it’s a follower copying other shows and having lousy musical numbers. One man having too much power over the series is a bad thing.

When a TV show, which is supposed to be about a time-traveller, ladened with emotional baggage, trying to 'do the right thing' for the universe, alone but for their companion, who is usually with them for their own reason, is not telling the story about the Doctor, but rather about what they are and represent, when the narrative goes out of its way to point out things that have no actual relevance to the story, but are there are 'educational reminders' of how you are 'supposed' to think and feel, and when the actor is somehow more important that the character they're playing... it's no longer the same TV show. It's using the IP in name only to push idealology. There is no narrative reason to ensure we know the Doctor's sexuality. We don't need to know if someone is trans or not. We don't need to be hearing slang terms that the Doctor (who is an alien from Galifrey, and not Essex), would never use - because he has NEVER used such terms before and have absolutely no relevance to the story or character. We certainly didn't need a 'soft reboot' which this is being coined as - although given the tragic last season, that was almost always on the cards.... The only reason certain people believe change is necessary is those who believe diversity and representation is more important than the franchise - because they want to use the franchise as a platform to 'educate' viewers on how they're supposed to think and feel. And those who do not are automatically classed as racist, homophobic, bigots and whatever else they can think of. They know this because if they tried to make a spin-off show, or, a completely new IP with these characters, and similar things but without using the Doctor Who name - it would have failed utterly. And I predict this new series will fail. Utterly. But don't look at any of the mainstream critics for confirmation - because right now there is a surge of .. whatever it is right now in the critic/journalism world, which distorts reality so much it feels more like propaganda. Instead, use your brain and read/watch independent opinions. Don't trust viewing figures as they will be manipulated. (unless they ACTUALLY tell the truth - but I suspect this won't happen.)

I am a massive Dr Who fan, however the first two episodes of the new series are an absolute insult to the series history. Where this goes terribly wrong, is RTD's total lack of self control, having to force stuff that doesn't work anyway, and in the process destroying whatever was good. maestro is little more, then a massively overblown pantomime dame. If you like a liberace of Dr who villains. Sorry, this is not good.

I am not impressed with the new episodes, it's a cringe fest. I have always loved Dr Who from when I was young and loved when it was revived with Christopher Eccleston and although some of the episodes have been a bit rubbish as we've gone along nothing has been as abysmal as the new ones. I was actually bored through some of it and usually I'm just totally focused on watching but it really is awful

Dr Who ended for me when it was forcibly transformed into Dr Woke by Witless and Chinballs. It ended with Capaldi and he had to act some quite rubbish stories with the worst ever Dr Who actress, Pearl Mackie, until the terrible trio of Witless, Mandip Gill and Tosin Cole.

This is the result of writing towards concepts instead of a narrative. Basically instead of writing a story, the wrote plot points, then add whatever filler in between to pad out the run time.

Bro that’s exactly how writing stories work. You brainstorm, pick a concept, make a rough draft, and fill things in. You can’t just write and expect it to be any good or even mid unless YOU PLAN. Not every story is going to be a 10/10, especially on Doctor Who since it’s a family sci-fi show.

You need the overarching narrative that grounds them together sensible. Doesn't mean it will be a good story or a 10/10, is just makes the story understandable and not confusing to keep up with. It still takes a good story to make it stand out in the end regardless.

They tore off a bandage only to stab the wound and kill the franchise. Dude only did this to be “celebrated for existing” It was mostly about him thinking others that worked hard are mediocre and that, just cuz he’s black (and gay), he has to work more to get “half” the recognition. But if the paying customers don’t like it, he doesn’t care cuz he has his Hollywoke bubble to back him up to let make a fool of himself with his narcissistic personality. Rusty Tit Davies has sabotaged a Great British institution for his own egotistical ends!

Yep. I'm dragging my box of Doctor Who dvds out of the attic and watching the classic show. Such excellent writing was rare even back then, which made me forgive the show's utter lack of budget. It's so sad seeing what happened to this legendary series.

it was a sad day when i finished watching episode 3… after watching every episode since an unearthly child and being a huge fan and supporter of the show… i turned to my partner and said i think i have to stop watching dr who… i almost cried at just how horrible this new series is… the actors were ok but nothing resonated… there was no depth no suspense no coherence or energy… it was flatter than flat and personally i felt the scripts were not written by anyone who loves the show or respects it… this direction will kill the show… and you will lose your main audience… honestly it felt like an ai wrote it :(

Embarrassing, boring, incomprehensible, crap acting, 💩, stupid pathetic story line, and now for the bad bits.....we watched the 1st episode then turned it off start of the second, utter bollocks.

I watched it for a few years, but i noticed it leaning hard into sjw silliness and stopped. Show is a bit too campy for me anyway.

lol the actual figures have shown to be almost double for those episodes. no one is watching it live. they would rather watcher it on iplayer

I have been watching the old classic episodes and the most obvious difference is that in those days, the Doctor and his companions were protagonists in stories about something else. The modern era from Tennant onwards (with the exception of Martha), has been a framework to make the stories about the companions. The Tennant era was all about Rose. The Smith era was all about Rory and Amy. And this is about Ruby. It needs to stop.

In my opinion, my very favourite show ended when Capaldi left. The edgy, dark, well written episodes of Eccleston, Tennant, Smith and Capaldi are a thing of the past. They are trying to pander to a global audience perhaps? To find a greater audience whilst alienating (pun intended) the fans of old school Who? Saying that I do think Gatwa would make an excellent Doctor, if the scripts weren't filled with cartoon woke monsters, with annoying talking babies, silly goblin space pirate things - who are they trying to impress with this? As for the song and dance routine, a thousand times NO for me, I'm afraid. Compare these new episodes to Blink, Dalek, Army of Ghosts, Silence in the Library, The Pandorica Opens, Vincent and the Doctor - need I go on? I could list another dozen, two dozen, then remember even more. Emotive, gripping, properly thought out scripts, tender, menacing - top drawer entertainment. New stuff is formulaic Disney dollar pap.

Jesse, you were very generous. I applaud your sensitivity. I won't insult the quality of the show. It has none. I won't dismiss the ability of RTD to show-run properly. He did that before. What you need to take into account is that RTD and Gatwa together have pushed some of the most divisive and insulting promotional interviews where they are VERY clear who the audience is--children, not the adult fans. And they state the purpose is for sending a 'message' to those children. Further, they derisively categorize all criticism as a result of homophobia, bigotry, and racism. Given the fact that Ncuti Gatwa asked the audience to 'go touch grass' rather than watch the show, they don't seem overly concerned about antagonizing the fan base. They revel in it. This suggests they already know the show is a failure and they are getting the sucker punches in against the audience before they receive a blow--either to justify further financing by Disney, or to defer blame to the audience outright, rather than accept the truth. Could they have done better with more time? Possibly. But when messaging comes before story-telling, substandard output is the organic result. They have two seasons in the can right now. The question is whether Disney will opt to finance more. Given their fiscal status, I'm reluctant to assume Disney's continued support.

But he IS a good actor in other stuff. He's brilliant in Sex Education. The problem is that he hasn't been directed enough in how to play The Doctor. He's been allowed to make performance choices that don't match a pre-existing character. To paraphrase Mark Kermode, nobody has stood up to him and said "hey Ncuti, that might be how you want to play the role, but just cut that out."

I have heard him interviews, he is not Scottish, not in the slightest and I should know because I am one. I'm not a massive Dr who fan but I remember hiding behind the sofa when I was a kid cause it was too scary. I've just seen an episode for the first time in a couple of years. What a bag of s**t. Didn't know they were in cahoots with Disney till I saw it here but that explains it all. One more reason not to pay my tv licence.

I’m a massive doctor who fan but recently they spent too much on the look (which looks terrible and I miss the older look - David Tennant’s 1st era) and completely screwed over the storylines. I also don’t like the new attitude of the doctor and his personality doesn’t feel like the doctor, the new series is very disappointing so far.

I rather see Tom Baker roasting Ncuti Gatwa's 15th Doctor.

Doctor Who was never meant to be an all singing all dancing stage musical that's based more on fantasy than science fiction but sadly that's exactly what it's become. Two out of three episodes of Gatwa's tenure have included an unnecessary and camp musical number. I like Ncuti as the Doctor, but RTD is clearly being pressurised by Disney to make the show "fun" and he's translating "fun" as being camp. Boom looks like a good episode in a similar vein to Blink, but sadly many including myself may not stick around to experience it after the garbage I've seen so far. I doubt anything can redeem Doctor Who now.

Doctor Who, the Physician of Horrible 😷

There's a simple problem. Ncuti Gatwa is not playing Dr Who. He's playing Ncuti Gatwa in a Dr Who series. He's making it all about himself, his personality, instead of about the character of Dr Who. He's not adapting to the character, he's trying to make the character resemble him. It's like he read the scripts but had never really seen an episode of Dr Who in his life before. He has absolutely no idea of who The Doctor is at all. And much as I like musicals, seeing The Doctor sing and dance in two different episodes (and him enjoying it, rather than being forced to by some sort of mind control) has just reduced The Doctor to a cheap vaudeville act. Jarring, and in the case of 'The Devil's Chord' episode, just awkwardly shoehorned in at the end for no good reason at all. And, seriously, Millie Gibson is the blandest companion yet, she hasn't made any effort whatsoever to establish a distinctive personality for her Ruby Sunday character. She's charisma free and not memorable and that probably explains her early exit from the series. To be honest, the only reason now for watching this series of Dr Who, is just to see how interesting the villains are because they're usually much more interesting than the main characters.

I was going to do a couple of small joke animation about how Dr. Who would use twerking to defeat his enemies and the show beat me to it. I was also going to do a short about Daleks seeing this and saying "Wait, we were terrified of this?" As well as them disintegrating the new Dr. mid twerk, and also disintegrating She-Hulk because of the same stupidity. Not going to watch. Disney ruins everything it purchases.

Agreed. I stayed up until midnight to catch the episodes debut on BBC iPlayer. Utter garbage, badly written and totally ill-conceived from start to finish. Those days when we thought RTD coming back to replace Chibnall seemed like a wonderful thing to happen seem like a very long time ago...

Sorry, but people used this excuse through three seasons of execrable acting on the part of Jodie Witless. Peter Capaldi had some of the worst stories in the 50 years I've been watching Dr Who but he can actually act, unlike Witless, and as a retired teacher I've seen a lot of children who were drama students and could act much better than her. It was a combination of preachy, boring stories, white man bad, and bad acting on the part of three of the four main characters (not Bradley Walsh who can act) which made me cancel my licence and stop watching after the scrapyard Dalek "special". At least I have 50 years of DVDs to enjoy.

Once again, thank you for subjecting yourself to this garbage, Jesse. I know it wasn’t easy or pleasurable at all, but your determination to honestly review and warn us of this trash is appreciated more than you know.

Classic Doctor Who was my favorite television show growing up. New Who was goofy, but it had its moments of brilliance. Recent Who though is just embarrassing. From wrecking 60 years of canon, pandering to various social agendas, to redesigning their classic villains to appear more "in" with modern audiences, it is clear to me now that the show I love doesn't exist anymore. The creators have destroyed it, through either bad writing, corporate greed, or probably both.

Why the hell did they think it was a good idea to do a dance number at the end of episode 2. Made what was a stupid idea totally ridiculous. So many loopholes in the story. Surely the Maestro needed to be defeated prior to the sixties, when originally appearing to restore the original history. And if no music, how come they were making bad music? The only redeeming factor was that it was not as awful a story as space babies, which was beyond comparison in its awfulness.

I don’t understand wasting your time making a video on something you hate… And I disagree with most of this, apart from it does feel for a younger audience but that could just be because it’s attempting to bring more attention to ‘fun’ so can’t judge till the series is released in full. I used to love watching Doctor Who. Now I wouldn't watch it if my life depended upon it. It's been utterly ruined, totally destroyed by the rainbow crusaders who just have to infect everything with their, as RTD put it, 'queer energy'. I'll never watch New Who again. I'll stick to proper Doctor Who... before it became 99% propaganda and box-ticking and 1% story.
