"MIDDLE CLASS"??? Noooooooo........Jackie, Rose and Mickey are very clearly WORKING CLASS!!! Single Mother who doesn't seem to have a job, lives in a Council Flat, Rose herself works in a department store probably on minimum wage, I believe Mickey's supposed to be a mechanic.

@@flaggerify I don't really know, I'm British. But here's a quote from a Rand arrticle called 'Most Americans Consider Themselves Middle-Class. But Are They?' "Chances are that you believe you are in the middle class-nearly everyone in the United States does. Doctors and lawyers believe they are middle-class; so, too, do welders and waiters. In a 2015 Pew survey, only 10 percent of Americans said they considered themselves lower-class and just 1 percent thought they were upper-class." If you search for it you can read more. Edit: and the underclass is a US term - probably coined by Gunnar Myrdal, who described it in 1963 as "class of unemployed, unemployables, and underemployed, who are more and more hopelessly set apart from the nation at large, and do not share in its life, its ambitions, and its achievements"

Yeah, William Hartnell to Tom Baker were credited as "Doctor Who" but Peter Davison requested it be changed to "The Doctor" which stuck for the rest of the classic era and even the movie. The revival reverted to "Doctor Who" but David Tennant requested it be changed to "The Doctor" once again, which has stuck ever since.

Yes, Billie Piper was a pop singer prior to appearing in Doctor Who. When her casting was announced I felt vaguely uneasy about it and thought it was stunt-casting just to attract viewers... I'm more than happy that my concerns were unfounded and that Billie Piper was perfectly cast to play Rose.

Billie Piper had attended stage/drama-school since childhood, and her main gifts and ambitions were in acting. She was talent-spotted aged 15 and became a pop star for a couple of years, after which she returned to acting. Apart from Doctor Who, she's made quite an impact on stage and screen.

My body is so ready for this. In regards to making a Doctor Who cartoon I say they 100% need to make one. I would love to see a 25-30 minute cartoon featuring a Classic Doctor, like I'd love to see a 3rd Doctor cartoon with 3, the UNIT family and both Jo Grant AND Liz Shaw be part of it, I think that would be tremendous fun. Alternatively it could be a 6th Doctor series where he's travelling with Peri and Frobisher (a talking penguin) it's be perfect. I think you'll get new viewers coming in to see this and I hope they watch your other reactions. I also agree that people should start Doctor Who from here, I will NEVER understand people who say start with David Tennant.

Interestingly, in the 8th Doctor novel The Gallifrey Chronicles, which was published after this series ended, it's revealed that the TARDIS interior was destroyed by a bomb, which left it in the state we see on screen. Billie Piper's recording career was very much prior to this, with 3 number 1 singles and a couple of albums. It's teenage pop in the main, but she was very popular during that period. Camille Coduri was in the film Nuns on the Run with Eric Idle and Robbie Coltrane, as well as King Ralph with John Goodman.

Those adventure that Clyde has evidence for happend between the time doctor left Rose and Mickey and came back to tell her it travels in time. I read recently that Russell Davies now regrets not giving this episode a more traditional Dr Who-ish name instead of Rose, but would this episode by any other name be as sweet?😂 Terror of the Autons was the last appearance of the mannequin menaces. They were intended to be featured in The Five Doctors along with the other classic baddies, but that scene was cut from the script. Well done remembering Camille Codouri was in King Ralph 👍. She's also in Nuns on the Run with Eric Idle and Robbie Coltrane. Billie Piper was indeed a pop star, this was the start of her transitioning to actress and she's done a lot of great stuff since. I concur that this makes a better introduction to the series for someone with no previous context than the Paul McGann movie does. Any Americans who watched the TV movie with no prior experience of Doctor Who must have found it baffling.

I learned on the internet, that Canadian TV helped to co-fund this first season. So, a week after the British tv premiere, it was to be on Canadian TV. I drove the 3.5 hours up to Detroit, and over into Windsor. I had booked a hotel room. We used to go to Windsor as a family, for a quick visit, years before. I had dinner -got a bottle, and settled in of new Who....a great experience!!! The US transmission was not until like the Autumn on BBC America. I imported DVD's from Amazon UK, and set my Mac for viewing of UK discs, so I saw the episodes before the domestic transmission (four seasons of doing that -slow to get the episodes here! I last went to the UK on a short trip in 2006 -went up on The London Eye, great views, no Autons :)

Billie Piper was a pop star before Doctor Who. She was 15 years old when her debut single "Because We want To" went to No1 in the UK charts making her the youngest solo artist to have a song debut at No1, that achievement has NOT been beaten to this day!! 🤯 Billie had given up her singing career in 2003 to focus on acting & the reason she went into singing was because she attended The Sylvia Young Theatre School. The opportunity to sing came first but she always wanted to act & when she had enough she stopped her music career & pursued acting. Other successful alumni from the school include, the late Amy Winehouse, Emma Bunton, Jessy Nelson, Dua Lipa & Daniel Kaluuya. Before Billie joined Doctor Who she had a well publicised marriage with a UK TV presenter called Chris Evans. They married in Vegas when she was 18 (he was 35) & they both spent a lot of the marriage drunk, spending loads of money (especially on cars) & having party's until their split in 2004. They both remain close friends to this day & Billie has said the marriage was the best drunken fun of her life & she needed it to help her deal with fame. I think Doctor Who came at the right time for her & she has since proved to be an accomplished award winning actress on stage & screen. Billie also currently shooting on "Wednesday" S2 for Netflix

40:38 - The theme was originally going to be a stereo mix of the 1963 original (the leaked episode in 2005 had this theme) but it really didn't work with the opening titles - it just didn't have any energy to work with the episode. Incidental composer Murray Gold, beefed up the original theme elements (the bass notes and lead melody & effects) by adding sampled brass instruments, strings between the bass notes and percussion. For the Christmas Special, they brought an orchestra into rerecord his theme embellishments.

31:00 "I want to say she [Camillle Coduri] was in King Ralph..." well spotted, she was in that movie. I'm a big fan of Camiller in this role in Who. She has a superb ability in comic acting but as we will see (no spoilers) can flip in a heartbeat to convincing tragedy. Jackie had ther potentialk to be a very one dimensional comic character but Camille's performance always grounds it and makes Jackie a much more real person. By the way, 'middle class'? Jackie and Rose are very definitely working class. . . Final 'by the way': Billie Piper had indeed been a teen pop star (performing simply as 'Billie'--you can find her videos here on KZread--and was phenominally successful being one of the highest selling UK female artists for a couple of years. This was her first significant acting role and, although she had attended stage school, there was some scepticism when she was selected that this was 'stunt casting' attempting to capture a younger audience. In fact she has subsequently gone on to great success both on screen and on stage winning critical praise and a number of awards.

No, we say Middle Class to mean Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, Bankers etc. You have to go up quite a bit further to get to the Upper Class - Judges, Generals, CEOs, Politicians, Moviestars, Premier League Footballers etc. And a lot further still to get to the Aristocracy!

@@franohmsford7548 I don't know how else you could describe the definition of "middle class" because middle class isn't the same as just being comfortable, which would usually be classified as upper working class. Also I feel like most people would use "posh" in the same way I would do. I think when it comes to language descriptivism makes more sense than prescriptivism. i mean the timeless child kinda opens the door for all kinds of shenanigans to explain away anything honestly. like it wasnt done for the right reasons but it does have potential. just they never had intent on using that potential just fixing something most people agree is a non issue just an unfortunate fact of the past ive kinda wondered about the autons getting guns too but i guess we could just explain it away in saying the ones with guns were maybe left over models from the previous invasion.

Here we go then! I'm curious, how are you gonna be doing Torchwood and SJA this time around, since I assume you want your dad to see those too? I rewatched these first 3 Eccleston episodes at the weekend. I'm impressed they didn't have 10 minutes of lore drops about the entire history of the show. Space Babies, take note. Yeah, Billie Piper was a minor pop star before this. She was also married to Chris Evans. The Top Gear/Radio presenter, not the Marvel actor. I don't think the BBC was too confident this would be a hit. It was scheduled against Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, which was a popular show on ITV that only ended this year. But Doctor Who got more viewers, at 10.5 million compared to Ant and Dec's 7.47, so clearly Doctor Who still had the audience pull after 16 years. Although I believe that, to this day, this episode is the highest viewed of NuWho, so I guess a lot of those viewers weren't keen. I'm sure someone probably told you last time, but those buses when the Doctor and Rose run weren't BBC buses, they were real ones. They stood around for ages waiting for buses to come past to film them running next to them. Nick Briggs is actually one of the bigwigs at Big Finish, so yeah, he does a lot of their monsters. Been doing the Daleks and Cybermen for them before he was even on the TV show. This is just speculation on my part, but I suspect the reason they went back to crediting him as "Doctor Who" is because RTD knew it would annoy people and he found it funny. Apparently David Tennant complained though, which is why they changed it. I had a look for Camille Coduri for you, and YES! She was in King Ralph in 1991. Never heard of it myself. Nor have I heard of most things she's done, according to IMDB, so well done for recognising her. I would agree to start someone with this...except I got a girl into Doctor Who recently with Hartnell, and she's really enjoying it. I know, I was shocked too.

The Doctor in his monologue clearly says he was judged on Skaro, not exterminated, and the Master before judgement requested his remains were taken home to Galifrey. The daleks were shoehorned into it at the beginning, but without directly being shown or named probably to avoid having to pay Terry Nation.
