I LOVED this episode, with the one exception of the whole "male presenting time lord" "just let it go" part. Like they could have been "actually our subconscious had been thinking about this for 15 years and we just need to..." I mean 12s last words were literally "Doctor i let you go" right???

okay tiny nitpick: rose's gender identity isn't what saved the day, it was her being donna's daughter xD Her identity just gave her some unique insight, presumably, that's why they were able to figure out how to "let it go", even though that was definitely a trademark rusty ass-pull. But I agree, it was definitely the crux of the episode. It had to be the central founding concept of this script.

I think they did a lot of fantastic stuff regarding weaving the conversation of Rose’s gender into this episode - but they also overly hammed it up in a few places too and sort of missed the mark while also putting chum directly in the water for phobes. I am glad Rose is there and they didn’t totally shit the bed - but it’s a complex conversation when cis writers tell other people’s stories as both texture and plot devices.

Speaking of wokeness and political stuff in Doctor Who: remember that First Doctor storyline called "Planet of Giants" where the focus was on pesticides killing insects that are necessary for the life of several different types of plants, especially farm crops? And that was in 1964 - Doctor Who has always been woke, and that's one of the reasons I love that show. I'm glad you enjoyed this episode; there was a Doctor Who comic released by Marvel in the US in the early 1980s that told the story of "The Star Beast" which I read (and owned) at that point. I didn't want to give away any spoilers to anyone I spoke to about it online. At the time that I'm writing this (12/1/2023), it's one day away from Special 2 "Wild Blue Yonder", which RTD said was like no other Doctor Who episode . I look forward to hearing your opinion of that episode, too, as I enjoyed your reaction to "The Star Beast". Thanka again.

Incorrect. If you mean it took sides in political issues I will grant you that, but in classic who it never ground the story to a halt to beat viewers over the head with a sign saying "THIS IS THE ISSUE, DUMMY!" As a transgender allegory this script is awful.

BUT that said I loved the more casual ‘definite article THE Meep’ and ‘Oh I do that’ THE Doctor exchange, that was very smart, and Rose was lovely. Onwards to the next one on tonight!

The Star Beast was based on a 1979 Dr. Who marvel comic same story but in place of The Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) instead of The Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant) the only part they left out that was in the comic was when The Doctor was put to sleep unconcious on the Wrath Warriors spaceship placing a bomb inside the Doctor so they could track down Beep The Meep. The Meep is a character of old and featured in other media comics, audio this is the first ever the character has appeared on screen in the main show.

The numbering is for the convenience of the audience - no Doctor has ever committed to a number. After Tenant previously regenerated into himself, Hurt being the regeneration between McGann & Eccleston, and the Timeless Child the numbring is totally meaningless in canon except as a wink and a nod*. Whitaker regenerated into one of "the old favorites" (per Baker in The Day of the Doctor), Clara gave Capaldi back his memories of her in Twice Upon a Time and now the Doctor is returning the favor by restoring Donna's memories. There is some purpose here - we just don't know what it is yet. If you accept Hartnell as "the first Doctor" then (in canon) Snith is the 13th not the 11th).

And as for the thing about DT appearing on posters like yours twice, that's just petty.

  • @Duncan_Hart

It always amuses me when the anti woke brigade get so worked up. As you quite rightly said - the show has always been political. The Doctor is essentially a social justice warrior. He (or she) goes in, calls out injustice and puts right what is wrong. That's the character. I love the fact that RTD is kinda trolling the anti woke mob and makes the non binary into a plot point. What I also really enjoyed was watching RTD on the offical podcast where he discusses the dead naming scene. He said: "Rose at one point is dead named in the street by some kids calling her by her dead name which is Jason... The interesting thing about Jason is that actually it means healer or doctor which means that Donna actually named her child after the Doctot without realising it subconsciously. Which is a nice fact to get in there. To get that across and to get the sort of prejudice being shown towards Rose by those bullies and thugs in the street, we actually have to have a scene of dead naming... I personally think we should stare into difficult stuff like this..." Yeah. I agree. And finally I don't really mind Tennant returning to be honest as it fits in with what The Curator said about "revisiting a few of the old faces, but just the favourites". Ultimately, it's Doctor Who. It's a quirky sci fi show. It should be fun. And this was. Enjoyed the reaction - thanks!

On the subject of Shirley's chair - I wonder if the very 'ordinary' appearance of the chair is deliberate - I think RTD would like a) the of idea of kids being able to see something like their own wheelchair, potentially, and be gifted the idea that it might have weapons in it, and b) the fact it would make it far easier for fans who use wheelchairs to cosplay as the character down the line. :)

  • @Lumibear.

    @Lumibear.

The way that ‘woke’ tends to be used online by the haters is usually as a shorthand for ‘they’ve obviously spent so much time working on getting the inclusive & progressive messages into every scene that they’ve forgotten to also write a decent story that works well for all and sticks to the past canon’. The main issue with doing that is you’re then narrowing the appeal to a smaller audience, which is of course not good for the ratings. I’d say most of this episode walked that line just fine, I was certainly entertained throughout, but yes I agree that the point was then laboured a tad too much, it started to get a bit patronising and insulting to The Doctor, who has literally just been a woman, which felt a tad ‘off message’ to me. I do hope RTD finds his balance, as going too far only adds fuel to the flames of division that the haters just LOVE to fan.

The ending is deus ex machina RTD at his worst, but the rest of the episode is nice enough. Very safe, so hoping the next two have some more ambition. In terms of the woke argument, Chibnall's era was never woke or PC; they barely even mentioned that she was a woman. It just had terrible writing and paper-thin characters, so not sure why people ever complained it was woke. I think Rose in this episode was a nice inclusion, but some of the dialogue around her was incredibly clunky. Also, the idea that 13s clothes regenerated so Tennant wouldn't be in woman's clothes is such crap. Her clothes were incredibly gender neutral, and you're not gonna show a man in woman's clothes but the next episode will focus on a non-binary girl? What? Just RTD talking rubbish because they wanted Tennant to appear in his cool outfit and have that on magazines and posters. Also what he has said about Davros in a wheelchair is absolute nonsense and doesn't seem to be going well with any part in the fandom. I'm a huge RTD fan, but some of these things he's saying are just bizarre.

Now Russell's response to people not liking calling David 14 and Ncuti 15 has simply and consistently been "tough". I'm personally not a fan of it myself, I'd much rather this doctor was called something unique like the "War" or "Fugitive" doctors. However I'm just going with it, at the end of the day it's trivial and when the Doctor after it 16, 17 and so on I'll just confuse myself going against the numbering.

After so many months of hype, buildup and anticipation, this episode was very… ok! David and Catherine were seamless in returning to their roles, obviously, same with Jacqueline King as Sylvia and even Shaun's actor, for the little he was given. UNIT wheelchair lady was cool, albeit kinda OP Imao. I also like the new UNIT uniforms but I do miss the berets. The new TARDIS is also breathtaking, I just love it. But the writing for the general story was just very weak, and the sonic screwdriver has become insanely OP, you cannot just magic forcefields to get out of a fight. The meep was actually a neat twist villain but the bit wore off after the first scene and it quickly grew tiresome. The directing/action was... fine, but nothing to write home about. The resolution for the metacrisis was insanely contrived, and every time Rose opened her mouth I wanted to die of unbearable cringe. Also, why was Sylvia the only person reacting normally to the prospect of Donna’s death? The Doctor just did not seem to care that he could be causing Donna to remember despite stressing the possibility earlier so what gives? Very strange decisions all around. It was decent and I liked it well enough overall but for the first 60th special, it could have been a helluva lot better and if RTD’s name wasn’t on it, I don’t think most people would be able tell it wasn’t a Chibnall era episode.

I disagree, it's way better than anything Chibnall ever did

Bored for most of the episode. For a special it wasn't very special. Next two I would hope will be better.

The more and more i see this episode the more i begin to realise how dull it is. The plot is paper thin and the dialogue is downright awful at times. The second episode is far better. Its a shame that its this story that is going to be an introduction to a bunch of new fans.
