@samreid6010

Strange never planned on beating Dormamu. At this point Strange is a decent sorcerer at best while Dormamu is a literal god. No matter how many time loops he goes through there’s a hard cap on how powerful he can get without more information and training about the intricacies of magic. The reason he’s so confident that Dormamu will concede is that he understands having an ego so big you think you’re a god. Up until the Sorcerer Supreme gave him the “This isn’t about you” speech on her death bed he was as conceited and egotistical as this literal god. So he knows the way to beat Dormamu is the exact same way he was broken: take control away from them. The simple act of telling Dormamu he’s holding them prisoner tells them they lack all control. Dormamu gives up after this because they can’t accept not having control
I like to believe that dying billions of times over thousands of years while using magic to try and defend himself gave him more time to practice and refine his magic powers than any other sorcerer could dream of.

@@DelRae You vastly overestimate my faith in MCU's directors. To paraphrase the great words of Gordan, I wouldn't trust them to run my bath.
My theory on why this works on Dormammu and wouldn't work on later villains is that because he's on a higher dimension of consciousness he is aware of the time loop, notice how strange never references any previous loop, he is the same every time until Dormammu interrupts him, for strange each loop feels like the first time and he's simply responding to how Dormammu interacts with him. He wins by being a lesser and more limited being than Dormammu, turning his weakness (or lack of higher consciousness) into a strength. (also strange only does the time loop because this realm is timeless to begin with, so he's less likely to break reality)

This was not the best MCU film, but this is one of my top 10 MCU scenes. It has a "Dr Who" vibe to it. No big smashing battle, but a clever twist of wits.
I wish this scene illustrated exactly how much time had passed in the time loop, in my mind I see it this way. He really did use the time loop to train and fight but ultimately knew he would lose head to head. So he likely spent eons in Dormamu's realm to the point the dark god was legit starting to go insane hence why he begged to be let free from the loop.

I think this was left open to interpretation, and doing so improved the storytelling. Underwrites the degree of sacrifice that Strange was willing to go through to defeat Dormammu. Once you start piecing it together, you're like Ohhhh wait.. Strange made a being that was omnipotent in his own realm to admit defeat and ask for terms? It couldn't have been just the few times that we observed.. the filmmakers have implied that Strange suffered death and reset countless times in interviews. This training allowed him to explore and endure the countless future scenarios where he was eventually able to forsee the unique outcome that allowed Thanos to be defeated.

Yes bro
I love how Dormamu starts off thinking that Strange was making a meaningless sacrifice, only to find out that Dormamu was screwed himself. Sure, he could kill Strange forever, but that means he'll never leave the timeloop that he couldn't escape from.(or he would've already, instead of meeting Strange's demands at the end)
Dr. Strange trolling an ancient evil into submitting has got to be one of the most Chad things to ever do. The guy literally took infinite pain just to tell his abuser: You're my bitch! 😂

This video clip teach you to don't forget to always save game before boss fight.
Dormammu: What is this? How is this possible? Dr Strange: I saved the game.
Fun fact: Benedict Cumberbatch also provided the motion capture and voice for Dormammu (electronically altered, obviously) So in a weird way Dormammu and Doctor Strange are mirror images of each other.

I believe this was taken from the comics, but in the comics this is how Strange became so gifted in the Mystic Arts so quickly in earth time. because in the loop he spent like a thousand years, or a long time in the loop fighting the Dark Lord. So like you see Strange die in all those ways. its because he learn to adapt, and Dormamu has to keep changing it up, but in the end just making Strange strong and smarter.

This scene is like a dark souls boss encounter. Once you start every defeat sets you back to the nearest "checkpoint" strange made his own "save file" and reloads. But the boss has enough awareness to realize!
Making scum-saving a crucial plot-point in a live-action movie is just brilliant. More of this

When the visual effects artists weren't overworked and the effects were actually quite good
Dark souls players throwing themselves at a boss till they get the pattern memorized
This is what all doctor strange movies should take inspiration from
Honestly this was one of the best scenes in the entire MCU. The main character was faced with a foe who they could literally never win against. He didn't even have a chance. Dormammu was just too powerful, very much a common human versus a literal God. No hope of success through victory because victory was literally impossible. So he had to be clever and use the only thing at his disposal that could achieve success and even then he could only ensure success by letting go of his pride and being willing to lose forever just so the Earth would stay safe...and so he succeeded by failing. All the more powerful when it's shown that be KNOWS going in that he can never be victorious. He was fully prepared to sacrifice himself to an eternity of torture. Which given his completely egocentrentic existence beforehand, is quite a journey. I do kinda wish it went on for another few minutes though and had short clips of him wavering under torture just wanting the pain to end but summoning up his reserves of willpower to force himself to keep going...that way we could have SEEN that he wasn't as fearless as he seemed and he did CARE whether he suffered, but simply cared about the Earth itself more.

3:14 Dormamu voice and face when he heard that, is so painful for him to the relasation since he has been all powerful for eternity but hearing those words made him feel mortal and had to agree to strange's offer
I wonder how many people know that this entire design - set, colors, depiction of both - is STRAIGHT out of the original comic book this scene came from. I remember the actual issue, reading it, as a kid in the late 70s/early 80s. They did an amazing job. Still my favorite Marvel movie.

This was just such a refreshing way of a final fight. i loved it. And it also set up how they beat thanos later when he saw though all the possible outcomes.
The best ending to an MCU movie since Iron Man. The hero doesn't beat the bad guy through brute force, he beats them by outsmarting them. He knows he can't win physically, but he doesn't have to: he just has to be willing to lose for infinity.
