Doctor Scale Restoration - Early 1900s Cast Iron Alexanderwerk
In this video, I restored a scale used by doctors in Germany in the early 1900s and produced by the famous Alexanderwerk company.
More about the restoration/transformation process:
I bought this doctor's scale from an auction site. I found it very interesting, and I think it was worth the effort because we don't see something like this every day.
From the pictures on the site, I didn't notice that crack; maybe it happened during shipping.
The restoration/transformation process was uneventful but painstaking. Many pieces were damaged due to water and time, especially the interior.
I also had to deal again with a huge crack. Cast iron welding isn't easy, but I think I managed very well as long as the scale could keep me on it (see the test at the end of the video).
The whole project took almost two weeks. The paint gave me little trouble, as the scale was painted in several coats, and the gel stripper could only penetrate one at a time.
I cleaned the rusted parts with a 2000-watt laser. A lot of people ask me about this machine, so I leave you a link to read up on it: www.sfxlyxc.com/?aff=2198
I also wanted to keep a vintage and doctorly look and paint the weighing scale sky blue.
I hope you enjoy this restoration project. I enjoyed working on it and am thrilled with how it turned out; it was gratifying to see how it works and to have the opportunity to own such a beautiful object!
Please ask me if you have any questions about what I used and why! I answer them all!
Cheers! Johnny.

Hi folks! This project was a real challenge considering I had to deal with such a nasty crack. Cast iron isn't easy to weld, it is probably the most hostile material when it comes to welding, but I managed pretty well; it could look worse, and I'm delighted that it passed the test, almost 90kg; that's a huge thing! I hope you will enjoy the process, and if you have any questions, please feel free; I'm always responding to all of you! Cheers! Johnny 🥰

You did a wonderful job restoring it!!I would have put that seam in the chrome ring around the dial at the bottom not at the top where it's seen every time

@dougallmctavish8113 that had a purpose: to be able to film while I hop on it. This cannot be a pity at all, especially when we talk about four screws to put it whatever side. So, from all the videos this is the single thing that made you comment, that's a pity... Cheers.
What a great way to remove rust, excellent restoration I might add.

Imagining the amount of feet this scale has seen, just before seeing it thoroughly cleaned (and sterilised) with a laser, is the most satisfying thing ever.

Great restoration. Just a question: the paint was leaded so paint stripper was a better way to go to get rid of it. But then you use a laser cleaner and vapourised the rest of it? Hope you were in an extraction booth when doing it!
@rustyshadesrestoration
10 ай бұрын
Thank you. I have a well ventilated area and i always wear my mask. Anyway, that amount of paint that remained after paint-stripping was pretty insignificant to be able to contaminate the workplace.
Why couldn't welding be done again after stripping? The holes in the crack remained ... They can be seen even after everything.
@rustyshadesrestoration
Жыл бұрын
Because cast iron is nasty, the carbon can migrate if you try to weld again, and when will get cold, you will get a crack 🤣 Cast iron is the hardest thing to weld. For me, those pits were perfect because i knew that they could be worse. And the fact that it survived a 90kg test is something extraordinary. Try to see on KZread guys welding cast iron (at 40kg, the weld is broken), and they are still happy! Cheers! 🙂

Zauważyłem jakby Pan tracił cierpliwość do nagrywania z biegiem czasu. Wszystko fajnie, daje łapkę w górę, ale na sam koniec strasznie szybko wszystko się wydarzyło. Wg mnie mniej drapania farby a więcej naprawy renowacji i montażu. Choć lasera zazdroszczę;) 😊
Was that the very first time you ever welded? All the rest of your work looked really good!
@rustyshadesrestoration

It's not the first time, but cast iron welding isn't the easiest thing and doesn't always look perfect. I have 90 kg, and this welding job kept me there are guys with 20 years of experience who are amazed by having a cast iron weld that holds 40 kilograms. So, I'm happy with the result 😀

nice job. But you should have welded the holes up and not put filler to hide them

Why cover the base of the scale in black sand?
@rustyshadesrestoration

To slowly cool down; otherwise, the carbon will migrate too fast and, boom, another beautiful crack will occur 😆
Średnio z tym spawem wyszło...
I'm surprised the other side wasn't also cracked near the attachment point. Very bad design. I thought Alexanderwerk stuff was supposed to be better than that.
Ну и зачем надо было их реставрировать, если они неверно показывают?
You know it's a really old scale by the fact it only goes up to 125 kgs😄
I love mechanics, where not a single gram of plastic.
Sorry to say but dial and the needle are upside down. 😮. 😊
you know that you dont have to cover the welding laser its not dangerous for our eyes, because the screen cant create uv radiation

That's how cast iron works; two small pits didn't bother me because this is a vintage piece. It will bother me if the crack does not pass the test. So, terrible for me in this case; it is very different than your terrible 😅
