Doctor Reacts To Transplant | Medical Drama Review

Transplant is a brand new medical drama on NBC hailing from our friends in Canada. It tells the story of a Syrian refugee who finds himself in Canada working in a restaurant and then getting thrust back into life at the hospital after his career as a Syrian doctor resurfaces. It’s slickly produced and a dramatic premise, but how medically accurate is it? From intubations to the Heimlich maneuver, to the bizarre operations of this level 1 trauma center, I have some things to say!
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

In countries like Syria there is no such law...the doctor shown in the drama is used to treating patients in trauma situations everyday while putting his own life at risk...this is supposed to symbolize the difference in medical practice (especially in places where you don’t have enough resources) but dr.Mike doesn’t understand that.

if it would really come to trial, the defense has a quite good argument for his actions. no intent to harm or kill, simply to treat a life threatening injury with less than optimal equipment. and he did indeed help. was he allowed to practice medicine in that way in that situation in that jurisdiction? no. was there intent to injure or kill the person? also no

@@Mike90317 Nah. People usually use 'murder' and 'homicide' interchangeably, but legally, homicide is any act that resulted in the death of a human while murder is specifically defined as homicide with malice aforethought, so it has to come with a malicious intent to kill the victim. Otherwise, it's voluntary manslaughter (unintentional homicide) or involuntary manslaughter (homicide from preventable accidents caused by negligence; also called criminal negligence). Short version: not all homicide is done in malice (such as manslaughter or negligence) while _all_ murder is inherently malicious.

It's called a cardiac thump. I'm a nurse and also a medical student. While it's an old-school method, and yes he was supposed to do chest compressions, there's no substitute for that, it is a method army medics still use in the battlefield and the guy strikes me as a vet so he would know it. The shock of the punch can deliver a couple of Jules to the heart, they say it's about 10J or so, which might be enough to shock the heart back into rhythm. The same principle as taking a hit to the center of the sternum can shock the heart into stopping can also shock it into restarting. It's old-school and not the best method but good in a pinch.

Not a doctor, but I believe it depends on where you live and at what age they deem you able to make medical decisions without an adult or guardian's consent. Once you turn 18 then you're allowed access to "adult privileges", but before then, the exact circumstance of the situation and your age can lead to a wildly different outcome. Specifically regarding your question, if you're in the United States, there isn't a whole lot you can do. At 16 you are entitled to confidential visits with a doctor, but most states do not allow you to give consent on healthcare services until you turn 18. But not all places. You may still be required to be at least a certain age, of at least 15 to 16 generally, but as long as you are mature enough to understand the procedure and any ramifications, you may be able to consent. I don't know who gets to make that call though, be it your physician themselves, or if it gets sent higher up the chain of command, etc. So your 11 year old brother, no, he would be too young to give consent. But you as a 15 year old, a solid maybe.

Really depends where you are. When I went to the hospital to give birth I accidentally pulled a cord that called for help into my room. Suddenly there was 6 nurses and 2 doctors SPRINTING to get to my room. They definitely get there if you need them! (Or when you raise your bed and unplug the alarm by accident...)

2:48 I'm an EMT, and in this situation I feel like it would be one of the rare cases where the answer isn't chest compressions... Without knowing how many patients there are, wouldn't we be triaging? In which case, 2 rescue breaths, if they don't start breathing again we move on... Only because this guy is a doctor though, unless you're trained for that, just do chest compressions :)

The common thing I've seen, if using a cardiac thump/chest compression combo, depending on the situation is a cardiac thump and then move on to chest compressions. Probably wouldn't be the thing I'd start with on a trauma victim in this case considering a cardiac thump requires a little more oomph lol. 🤣

  • @Isaic02

Why would you start triaging before you know it’s necessary? If the any of the first patients you check were in serious condition, you could easily lose a patient, that could have been saved, for no reason if triage was unnecessary.

  • @darthryking

@@Isaic02 The whole reason why you'd triage is because you don't yet have enough information to know what is necessary at the time. Triage is the process of accounting for everyone who may need treatment at the scene of an MCI (mass casualty incident) like the one depicted, and then sorting patients into categories by severity of their injuries. If you don't perform triage, you may end up missing someone who may have been savable but ultimately died because the responder(s) on scene failed to account for and prioritize all potential patients. The way you would do this would be to find and check every patient, quickly check for any immediate life threats, tag them with a color based on severity of injuries, and move on to the next patient until you've accounted for everyone. No treatment is provided until *after* everyone is accounted for and you actually have all the information available about the incident. (Ideally by that point the tons of backup you should have requested will have arrived, since an MCI by definition means that there are more patients than the available responders currently on scene are capable of actually handling.) (Source: EMT school)
