    No evidence it was a social media challenge. Police found his phone in another room. A social media challenge would ways be filmed. He also attempted suicide a day or so before he was found. His school told his mother they were concerned about his mental health

    he says this, but its clear he knows the decision taken was the correct one. there's a real question as to whether or not this is actually news as this person clearly says this is not a unique case. i have heard that reading through the legal documents, tissue had already been necrotising. he was not able to absorb nutrients by himself and was being cared for in an undignified way due to his condition. i have also heard that a parent is known for being litigious already. respect for medical evidence is important and blowing this up in the media could be argued to be in a way disrespectful to the medical team and to the boy himself, when the evidence was clear. its just that not the whole evidence is being reported in the media. frequent litigation and denial can point to pre existing psychiatric disorders and the parent is known for other excessive behaviours almost accusing the medical team of "intentionally suffocating" the child? very disgusting i would say and disrespectful and unappreciative of any care provided to this person unfortunately, I do not believe this is news and the money generated from it is not clean money and the press coverage that Barts NHS Trust is getting is very unfounded.

    Doctor Azmain; thank you for your giving clarity to us all; following Archie's case, broke my heart, taking me back to April 7th 2000. reminding me of the loss of my precious prince baby boy whom, lost his will to survive hence was placed on live support due to complications born 16 weeks premature. etc.. sadly 3 weeks form my baby boys birth , doctors removed our precious baby boy's tubes that in which my baby boy was making his lungs and heart pump . I new on the day my precious baby boy had crossed over way before his mum and dad ;would return back to the NICU , that after noon. once the medical experts explained to my wife and i, about our precious baby boy's condition, all though our precious baby boy survived the night, however your baby boy has brain damage , he will only survive a few days before his origins shut down. hence i can honestly say , on that dark day , i finally began to truly understand the phrase : cruel to be kind. after my wife explained to me if our baby boy survived etc.. the outcome, hence we had to make the hardest dissension in our lives ,and that was to take our precious baby boy of his life support tube . ( I knew our baby boy crossed over on our return and was ask by the doctors to place our hands inside his crib to touch our baby boy, my baby boy had a strong grip of my small finger and his grip was cold and really tight ; for was such a tiny baby boy, i new than i lost my baby boy,!!! his baby sister " TWINS " Premature . after 115 days, lived on for the both of them. in her crib at the NICU, was finally discharged from hospital to live with her mum and dad, age 22 now . has proved the medical experts and skeptics wrong in more ways than one !

    Sorry Dr. Azmain, but I've no respect for people who, with no medical knowledge, go against whole teams of experts. As you rightly said Archie was already dead months ago. The machine was simply keeping his corpse from rotting. When my mother had a massive stroke the doctor showed me an image of the vast amount of damage her brain had suffered. I didn't have the slightest hesitation in telling them not to put her on a ventilator, because even if she had regained consciousness I would have been condemning her to a fate far worse than death.

    This is an amazing post, David. My mother went through a similar illness to your mother, & my family & I knew straight away that the best course of action for her was to withdraw life support. That was 4 years ago & I don't regret our decision at all. Unfortunately, there seem to be so many people out there who think they know better than the medics. It's shocking really. There is no UK statutory definition of death; therefore, the judicial system has relied exclusively on the historical neurological criteria of death articulated more than four decades ago and reaffirmed in 2008. Moreover since 2008 neuroscience has disproved the fundamental assumptions underpinning the code of practice about the brainstem being the single mediator of both consciousness and integrative function in humans. (Association of Anaesthetists).

  • @DoctorAzmain

    @DoctorAzmain

    Жыл бұрын

    The neuroscience behind what constitutes death is incredibly complex, and the argument made in the article you cite is testament to that. Will the definition of death be instated or changed in the future? Potentially. But perhaps until that point, we have to make decisions that we think are in the patient's best interests. I'd like to offer the example of CPR and do not attempt CPR (DNACPR) - let's say an elderly patient with multiple comorbidities has a cardiac arrest. Would you do CPR? They could very well be brought back to life, so isn't DNACPR tantamount to killing them? But the decision for DNACPR is made because, if they did indeed survive the brutal and violent procedure that CPR is, they would be in severe pain/distress/discomfort that would simply not be in the patient's best interests, and they may yet deteriorate and die while suffering the consequences of CPR. In those cases, doctors may decide to write up a DNACPR form. These are not easy decisions, these are not simple decisions - and no, doctors don't always get them right. It is absolutely okay to question these decisions and see if we could've done better. But someone has to make those decisions - this is the best we can do for now, with the evidence that we have, and we can only hope to improve upon that, for the sake of our patients and society.

    @@DoctorAzmain Exactly, But in the video, you mix brain-dead and brain stem dead. UK brain stem is deemed the good cause to turn off life support, in most jurisdictions it's brain-dead. Although in the minority, I think the UK is correct.

  • @DoctorAzmain

    @DoctorAzmain

    Жыл бұрын

    @@MarkUKInsects yes I appreciate this response. You're absolutely right that there's an important distinction between "brain death" and "brainstem death". Unfortunately it's quite difficult to go into that depth of medicine/neuroscience/neurology in a 2min video designed to allow a person not acquainted with these terms to understand the basics of the situation. On the NHS website for patient and public information, it states: "Brain death (also known as brain stem death) is when a person on an artificial life support machine no longer has any brain functions. This means they will not regain consciousness or be able to breathe without support." I have chosen to maintain this narrative in order to be consistent with NHS messaging. In other words, this is far too nuanced a discussion for a 2min brief on a very complex situation. Thank you for bringing this up though!

    I can't understand why so many comments here are saying it was not a tiktok challenge and how certain people that state it was, are going to be sued by tiktok. First let me say that even if in Archie's case , his death was not due to a tiktok challenge many other kids are doing the ligature chocking challenge on tiktok and dying from it. Archie's mum is going through much suffering and i doubt she will ever stop grieving for her lil boy. So for those of you being so fixated on this tiktok challenge detail i ask you all to look past that detail. The young boy has died and his family are trying desperately to come to terms with it. Grief and trauma can cause people to be in denial because of the severity of the horrific event. Doctor Azmain said that Archie may have participated in the tiktok challenge but he was not definate about it. Noone knows if perhaps he had watched the video on a friend's phone or just heard about it at school or from other kids somewhere else. Nothing can bring this young boy back and that is the tragedy. I do know that a young boy would have had to find out for himself how to choke himself...he was not born knowing that. In my personal opinion he would have had to learn how to makeca ligature that would do the job and i imagine at his age the internet would be his go to resource for that knowledge.
