Sure, but maybe not for the reasons you think. Food contamination standards have been consistently loosened the more modern food processing has been monopolized and the more corporate money has dominated politics (in the US, looking at you, Citizens United). If you're speaking from the UK, you may want to consider, for example, the insane-but-true reality that you're currently paying extra for private water firms to cover your rivers and beaches with raw crap. Corporate domination of society does insane things create.

I work at a fairly high end coffee roastery and I have never ever seen an insect in any coffee. We get the un-roasted coffee from multiple countries, we pour it by hand held spades, into the roaster. We see pretty much everything. The coffee then gets roasted for about 11 minutes up to over 200 C, and all bacteria and other stuff that is light gets sucked out by the air filter or gets burnt away. The coffee then instantly gets packed. So if you buy directly from a coffee roastery, or from someone that buys from a roastery, I don’t see how there could be any risk of contamination. If you buy cheap coffee, it is likely from lower quality and stuff that has been sitting in storage god knows where for a long time post roasting. THEN I could see how it could get insects.

And disclaimer: Obviously if your doctor says avoid coffee because of this allergy, and you don’t know where the coffe comes from or anything, then follow your doctors advice. I just wanted to reassure people that it is very very very very unlikely that any coffee you have had in a cafe, or the one you make at home from whole beans or a decent brand has any insect part in it.

Best advice: Go watch some puppy videos and forget it. Life's too short to worry about things like this that will not be detrimental to you or are abusive to anyone. Here, have some random trivia that'll really stick with you because it sounds insane: If you shuffle a deck of cards, it's very likely that particular order or cards has never been seen and will never come up again.

According to our research from reading the comments on one KZread Short, we've discovered people are fine with cockroaches in their coffee ,as it provides a bit of protein. So we asked ourselves "Why stop there?". That's when we invented Choc Full O' Cocks (brand name subject to change). While most coffee brands try to filter out the cockroaches, providing only a little bit of protein to get through, we add EXTRA cockroaches to make each cup of Choc Full O' Cocks the full protein experience you've been craving. And as an added bonus, more cockroaches means less coffee, which means we pay less to produce our product and since we're not greedy a-holes we pass those savings on to you!

Now I want to know how much money would be saved this way. I guess roaches can be raised locally everywhere, so depending on the places of production, you'd save some shipping costs. At what point are the roaches added? Do you ferment them? Add them later? How many roaches turn into how many roach grouds? What does it cost to feed the roaches? Would you give them special feed for extra flavor? What do you consider the ideal cock-coff'-nutrient balance? Which percentage ratio is most cost effective?

If you go to the fruit and veggies section in groceries you will also probably find a few fruit flies buzzing around. Doesn't mean it's not sanitary. It's just they are everywhere and it's kinda unrealistic to have 100% no fruit fly infected foods. If it makes you feel better though, consider that the fruit fly is essentially made of the fruit it came from. So if you eat one you are eating an apple that has been converted to fly and not something nasty like poop. If you want to avoid them, wash your fruits when you get home. Make sure you remove any fruit that begins to rot. Clean your drains. If you have indoor plants, fruit flies can also lay eggs in the soil so it may help to keep your plants away from fruit/veggies.

What she says is misleading though, it's not 10% cockroach it's 10% of green coffee is contaminated with bugs. The actual figure is 10mg per 454g (1 pound) and that's the upper allowed limit meaning there's often less. It's also only 10mg of "defect material" so that could be any part of a bug, or other detritus so the percentage of the allergens is a fraction of that again. I'm not saying it's impossible to get an allergic reaction from it... But I think it is scientifically improbable considering the exceptionally small doses we'd be realistically talking about here. It's careful not to be afraid of things because there's something in it without looking at how much there actually is... There's mercury in vaccines, it doesn't mean vaccines are bad for you... (And the antivaxers can troll someone else thanks)... Realistically everything has associated risks but the likelihood of those risks can be nominal and let's be honest, how many people have those allergies and drink ground coffee without effect before learning this and are fine...

it might also have to do with the coffee distribution and food handling process. Like how some food labels must warn of possible peanut and wheat contamination due to the factories producing the foods also have those contaminates in the general area, or also use the same machines to process the contaminates. It's not like they're not cleaning or careless with contaminates, but some people can be super sensitive and have extreme reactions, and must certify foods are not processed in those facilities. It's a massive liability to mislabel and someone does have a reaction - for instance, there was a massive salmonella outbreak with ice cream, due to the same vat transporting egg material was not cleaned properly or sanitized, and the CDC was summoned to investigate due to the extreme epidemic. But like I said, depends on where the coffee comes from and the handlers

I'm allergic to shellfish, but it's a mild/moderate allergy. A small amount of insect parts will likely go unnoticed by my immune system. I don't seem to have any real reaction to any if they are in my food. BTW: Many of your processed foods have insect parts in them.

Even a severe allergy isn’t likely to be impacted by “infected” foods. It’s just not enough to be challenge for your immune system. When they say 10%, it’s not 10% per bag. It’s 10% per total batch. It’s a massive amount with a very tiny concentration. OP made a very informative response but the person who made the original was pretty blatantly misleading
