Doctor Explains Andre Gomes Terrible INJURY and BROKEN ANKLE

Спорт

Everton's Andre Gomes suffered a scary ankle injury this weekend against Tottenham, appearing to both fracture and dislocate his ankle after taking a tackle from the Spurs' Son Heung-min. This is probably the worst injury we've seen this year. In this video we'll look at the injury mechanism, relevant anatomy, and how this can happen.

I know you said there's nothing you can do, but when Neymar or other players who are often fouled talk about diving or falling to protect themselves this is what they are looking to avoid. If Gomez's reaction to getting clipped had been to let himself fall instead of planting a foot and continuing to try to run from an unbalanced positition, I could see this injury not occurring at all.

Keep your bigoted, racist and disgusting comments where they belong - in your sick & twisted mind. Are you saying that your Christian God is ok to talk about, but an equally religious person who offers prayers to their own God for somebody is a paedophile? That's just wrong. Your commandments don't say "Love thy neighbour, as long as they're also Christian". It makes me glad to be an Atheist and to rely on medical science rather than do nothing and hope that God steps in and cures everyone!

I can say you're 100% right with the bone healing be the easy part. It was the recovery from muscle atrophe, and the ligament damage that took almost two years to get back to feeling somewhat normal. Even now, almost five years later, I'm still only at 80% of what I had. It's just a super-traumatic injury, with tons of moving parts.

I suffered an almost identical diagnosis from a very different incident in late 2007, in my late 20s. I took a blunt force trauma to the mid-shin from a car/leg impact at 70mph (I was riding a motorcycle and collided with someone else's wreck). The tib and fib were fractured, the ankle dislocated, and the ankle broke. My foot stayed anchored to the motorcycle footpeg, as the impact occurred and pushed the leg back relative to the foot. It was my boot kept things kind of in place enough to keep the foot. The nerves got a bad hit, and the tendons and ligaments were pretty much all torn or displaced from toes to knee. (For reference, it's my leg on the wikipedia page for skin grafting, which shows the exterior skin injuries to the mid-shin). The ankle had to be pinned for 4 months, and I was in a cast and on crutches for almost 8 months. I took almost 6 years to walk unaided more than just a little around the home. I was begging for an amputation around the 3 to 5 year mark (denied). Now I struggle daily with pain and mobility. The movement of my ankle is severely limited, and it's only going to degenerate in future with arthritis as I now move into my 40s. However I was grossly unfit. In Gomes favour, he's an elite athlete. He has access to the best medical trauma care, follow-up care, after-care, and rehab care imaginable. I'd expect his prognosis to be infinitely better than my own was/is.

Dr. Sutter everytime I hear that someone has a broken back the first thing I think of is pain and will they ever be the same. I remember in 2013 Tony Romo after breaking his back came back to play in the NFL. How? Also what was different from the 2013 break and the one in 2016 that made him retire. Please do a video on broken backs. I really enjoy your channel and the work you put into the videos is much appreciated.

Great stuff doc, thank you for posting. It's scary and it brings back bad memories for me personally. I had the exact same injury happen to me in the exact same way almost 25 years ago (broken Fibula and dislocation). I am now 50 yo and I still have the hardware in my ankle, metal plate and 9 screws. My doctor at the time told me that it's ok to leave the hardware in long term but I haven't gotten a "second opinion" in almost 25 years...:) Do you recommend taking the hardware out? I'm just a little wary as it would obviously involve another operation and recovery. I still play recreational soccer and have been wearing the same ankle brace since...:). Occasionally, I do feel some pain/soreness associated mostly with weather changes, but is this hardware good for life, or do you recommend taking it out? I appreciate your time!

What do the trainers on the field have for pain. I thought about this especially in the case of compound fractures like anderson Silva. Is there morphine near by? Or do they just have to deal with the pain?
