Lyrics:
In a dream I heard an echo of your voice, my dear, gently pulling me near
And for that moment, all my sadness had disappeared
Dawn arrives and I awake in my room feeling blue, wishin’ I could see you
I let my eyes close and await you through fantasy
Until last night, tears were falling like rain from my eyes
But now my heart feels light...
Tell me, do you still remember? When our eyes first locked together?
Tell me, do you still remember? When a touch could last forever?
Proud that you’re my first and only, the beginning to this hopeful journey
I love you so
Even now I feel the heat inside your fervent gaze though you've fallen astray
And like a fire you're defrosting my heart and soul
Through and through I will accept the love you gave to me, in return just behold me
Like the sunlight is igniting the distant moon
Until last night, tears were falling like rain from my eyes
But now the world seems bright...
Tell me, do you still remember? When our eyes first locked together?
Tell me, do you still remember? When a touch could last forever?
Proud that you’re my first and only, the beginning to this hopeful journey
I love you so
I’ll never be all alone, you see
We'll reunite, you and me
Tell me, do you still remember? When our eyes first locked together?0
Tell me, do you still remember? When a touch could last forever?
Proud that you’re my first and only, the beginning to this hopeful journey
I love you so
I’ll never be all alone, you see
We'll reunite, you and me

My friend sent me this link to this version of the song and I clicked it, afraid I wouldn't like it. I'm glad my preconceptions were wrong! When translating a song to be sung, artistic liberties are necessary as a literal translation won't fit the rhythm as easily as it happens in the DYRL movie. Interpretations may vary, and it depends on how one conceives what is implied. As I read the original Japanese lyrics, the song strikes me as a bittersweet song, a message to a loved one who has passed on. It's about memories of love and recovering from a mourning phase. She has cried every day since he departed, defeated by loneliness. She envisions him as an image, beckoning her. She feels his warmth, even though he is not there. She asks him to watch over her from far away, though he has departed. But she still feels his presence and is now a part of her. Perhaps my interpretation is a bit sadder, but the version in this video brought a tear to my eye nevertheless.

The lyrics in this video are not a direct translation of the Japanese version, but an intentional translation, which makes it all the more touching. For example, a direct translation of the first phrase would be following. Now I hear your voice saying "Come here" to me as I'm about to give in to loneliness. The lyrics in this video sound more pleasant because the lyrics fit well with the music.

I spoke to him at the first 'Robotech Con' back in the 80's and he was a humble, somewhat sad guy (already the fan hate had reached him). Let's just enjoy the fact that so many more people know Macross, Southern Cross, Mospeada and many other anime classics because of the edited, reshaped Robotech series. It wasn't a pure iteration, but it worked at the time. It really, really worked. I'm glad for it. Later, I got to see what pure Macross was all about.

@@TheShadowraith Unfortunately, from what we've seen so far, it appears as if Funimation is using the legal precedent set by that so-called "settlement" to release Robotech on BluRay, and I confirmed with Funimation directly, it won't contain the original Japanese audio. Subsequently, at least in the USA so far, it will just be Carl Macek's atrocity of a bowdlerization which is best left buried and forgotten like his corpse, which will instead be preserved for posterity, unnecessarily. You can of course, import マクロス on BluRay, but it will be about 3X the cost. I guess that's what I will be doing, but then, back in the days when all of this was still new rather than nostalgic, I was also collecting the 1/55th scale Takatoku Toys Valkyries and such too.

y'know, it's funny how poignant this song really is when you think about it. The first time i actually heard it was when i watched Macross Frontier if i remember correctly, it took me a bit to learn that it was older than that and the "Do you remember love?" version by Mari Iijima kinda became the "true" version for me. I never thought i'd hear an english version ACTUALLY do it justice. Like there was one version i heard a while back that was . . . good, but not on the same level. So to hear this and get shivers up and down my body at several points through it all is just an *extreme* treat for me. So while i hold the original in high regards? What you've done is absolutely splendid and matches the original in pretty much every single way. In short, you have created *C U L T U R E*

Fun (?) Trivia (?): The song “Do You Remember Love” is actually canonically written in English. It is sung in Japanese because... its and anime but who knows? Maybe Minmei is just a master in on-the-fly song translation. Heck, the most widespread language in the Macross is probably English. Everyone “speaks” Japanese since its an Anime.

In this animated story, the boss of the Zentraedi army, Bodlzer, had only music plates and no lyrics. Meanwhile, among the ancient ruins left on earth, Misa picked up a plate, but did not know what was written on it. However, after hearing the aforementioned music, Misa realized. What was written on the plate was a lyric. Misa then analyzed the plate and translated it into Japanese. At this time, a lyric was created in which one Japanese letter was assigned to each one note. In reality, the song was written in Japanese by Kazumi Yasui and composed by Kazuhiko Kato. The song was then translated into English.
