Do you need Concealed Carry Insurance? Massad Ayoob has the answer - Critical Mas Ep 42

Спорт

Being tried and sued after a self-defense shooting can be incredibly expensive. Having experts by your side to help you during that situation is important. But beware of the fine print! Some CCW insurance companies include many provisions to make sure they'll never have to pay. Massad Ayoob has been in the court system as an expert witness for over 40 years. Mas knows how to spot a fraud and know who will really help.

Critical Mas(s) with Massad Ayoob is a show that provides expert analysis over a wide range of contemporaneous topics related to civilian and law enforcement self defense, the use of force, and second amendment issues, provided by a renowned and established author with a career spanning decades in training law enforcement officers and the public at large, who is frequently called upon to provide expert witness testimony.
ABOUT MASSAD AYOOB:
Massad Ayoob has been handgun editor of GUNS magazine and law enforcement columnist for AMERICAN HANDGUNNER since the 1970s, and has published thousands of articles in gun magazines, martial arts publications, and law enforcement journals. He is the author of some twenty books on firearms, self-defense, and related topics, including “In the Gravest Extreme” and “Deadly Force,” widely considered to be authoritative texts on the topic of the use of lethal force.
The winner of the Outstanding American Handgunner of the Year Award in 1998, Mas has won several state and regional handgun shooting championships. Ayoob was the first person to earn the title of Five Gun Master in the International Defensive Pistol Association. He is the current President of the Second Amendment Foundation. He served 19 years as chair of the Firearms Committee of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, and several years as a member of the Advisory Board of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association. In addition to teaching for those groups, he has also taught
for the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors and the International Homicide Investigators seminars.
Mas has received judicial recognition as an expert witness for the courts in weapons and shooting cases since 1979, and served as a fully sworn and empowered, part time police officer for 43 years, mostly at supervisor rank. Ayoob founded the Lethal Force Institute in 1981 and served as its director until 2009, and now trains through Massad Ayoob Group. He has
appeared on CLE-TV delivering continuing legal education for attorneys, through the American Law Institute and American Bar Association, and has been retained to train attorneys to handle deadly force cases through the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network. Ayoob served for two
years as co-vice chair of the Forensic Evidence Committee of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He also appeared in each episode of Personal Defense TV (Sportsman’s Channel).

Look at the recent FL vs Reeves incident. Reeves a retired Tampa FL police captain & Sea World security manager had a lethal force event in a Wesley Chapel FL movie theater. That court trial took 8, eight 😲 + years to resolve. Reeves was found not guilty. The SAO & media groused over the 🍿 murder trial. It irks me as a FL tax payer how LE & court SAO staff made this case go 8yr for nothing, zero!

It's the nature of government. 262,000,000 democide deaths in the 20th century (not military casualties). Government is the biggest homicidal threat to a human. The U.S. government is supposed to support a "fair" trial; fair by _their_ definition. No way is having a limitless budget against the accused and some poorly paid public defender fair. And the judge is an employee of government who, despite a clear conflict of interest, is expected to be fair and/or impartial. You're right. It's so sad, it's laughable. My pet theory is that normies have brainwashed themselves after watching about 30 years of cop/lawyer shows; morality plays disguised as real proceedings. They are shocked when it hits the news that a "good" cop/lawyer has done some morally repulsive stuff. They could have just watched an hour of _Audit the Audit_ and schooled themselves.

The "do-gooder" gun owners shall eventually destroy the 2nd amendment on their own, by self-righteousness! What part of shall not infringe do the "do-gooder" gun owners not understand! Nearly half the nation are convicted felons for victimless non-violent offenses who are PERMANENTLY and ETERNALLY BANNED from possessing a firearm or even a single bullet, for life! (Self-righteous gun owners shall eventually lose their guns & bullets too!) FACT: There are more non-violent than violent felons without their God-given gun rights thanks to self-righteous do-gooders! If they were legitimate insurance companies then, based on the amount of money they collect, they should be paying out hundreds of millions per year for bail and lawyers on self-defense claims. Look at the news. That isn't even possible. I can't find any evidence that any of them have ever paid a claim and they certainly don't pay the hundreds of millions that a legit insurance company would pay. The odds are about 1,000 to 1 that you will never have a covered event in your entire life. The average customer will pay for about 75,000 years before they have a claim. Its sad things are changing so much that as a concealed carrier its better legally to run from an active shooter on many situations even if you know you can stop a shooter. So much going against lawful carriers to do the right thing because of democrats and laws that protect criminals. Please vote for whats right for good guys and let's vote to be stricter on criminals. Yes, keep voting for pu**y grabbing, clorox drinking, enenies of American democracy. Show your patriotism by supporting those who suppress voting and deny election integrity if they don't win. Support those who would steal power and keep it in a one party system, then watch as they have to take the guns in order to keep their power. A duty to retreat has worked just fine since the end of the wild west days, but no, the typical gun nut believes the constitution provides a duty to shoot. It does not.

Mr. Ayoob, I just want to tell you that long ago, when my kids were learning about firearms I had them read “In the Gravest Extreme” as I had read it and learned a lot. Your ‘tip’ about throwing money one direction and running the other in a mugger situation saved my 18 year old son when he was in a large European city. And your suggestion that a retail store operator not wear a firearm in the store as it forces a robber to shoot you first changed a friend’s behavior in his place of business. Many good ideas and much information are contained in that book. I thank you and still listen to what you have to say.

Thanks for the heads up information! As an aside, it seems to me that if the State can go up against you with virtually unlimited financial resources, groups attorneys and investigators, connections to law enforcement that allow them to sift through evidence you may not have access to, other than in the "discovery" phase where you get to see what harmful things they dug up... but may never see exculpatory evidence they ran across from those same sources, then you get aquitted... the State should cover your legal costs, including time off work. If they don't have to indemnify you, then the State has no reason to worry about bringing unjustified charges against you. It's just wrong! Heck, they could outlaw guns, file suit against every gun owner in America that refuses to comply and drive them to bankruptcy regardless of innocence or the illegality of the gun ban... then just walk away.

Yes, it's on us to read the fine print and verify exactly what we're signing up for but the reality is it's not always easy for the layman to understand all the legalese. On one of the USCCA videos, there were comments about the clauses and because of that they made a counter video. I am starting to wonder if the USCCA is tilting the table too much. As Mas said, there could be an out that is unreasonable, but legal for them and then you paid all that money for what? So the principles live in WI well? @@davidjs74 I haven't yet. The way I look at is that the USCCA is playing the marketing/business game. The question is, how do they sell a product while limiting our liabilities and increasing profits? They want as many subscriptions as possible, but mitigate the claims in two ways: Loopholes in the coverage and training/education. There are a lot of loose cannons in the 2A community that have a poor understanding of the law or concepts about self-protection. Hopefully education cuts down on that. When they do stupids things, the loopholes will mitigate the liability. The thing is, how far will they go? From what I have read, it maybe that even too many good claims have been put in and that affects profits, so they become over vigilant in evaluating claims. We see that with health insurance as well as vehicle insurance. The thing is with this type of insurance, there's really nothing to subrogate to recover losses, so it's safer to just screw folks if you can. In the end, the motive for the owners and executive staff at the USCCA to keep in good fettle and here we are. I suspect rates will go up eventually. Kevin M of the USCCA replied to topic in a video, but he kind of skirted the issue, but who does he work for? I think companies in general have a hard time admitting their first priorities are themselves, meaning the executive staff.

I talked to USCCA several months ago about cancelling my membership. I allowed them to discourage it. After more research, I know that is the correct action. I like the magazine, but $37 a month for a magazine is too much. hte insurance is worthless.

A feature to look for is the provision of an attorney before you get charged, preferably before you have to talk to the police. As Mas has brought up before, your mouth can lose your case before it even gets started.

I agree. 💯 You need to be 🤐. I'd add some 🚑🚒🚓 may press you to spill details or "confess". I do security, 👮🏼‍♂️ & have seen street bums, by standers rush up, tamper with evidence or lie to LE officers at the scene.

I know Mr. Ayoob isn't selling us any company, but kinda wish he could have gone into a bit more detail in what "good" insurance looks like/the kinds of companies to look into apart from that first one he mentioned. Because the biggest take away I got was, even if I'm 100% justified in having to use self defense, sounds like I'm screwed because our legal system is that ridiculous that unless you can pay 100K or more in Lawyers...or become such a national media circus you can get people to pay for you, you're more or less screwed even if you get acquitted

I think one of the most important takeaways is "read the fine print". Doing so kicks a lot of options to the curb. Question now would be is there a list of CCW 'insurance' plans that do NOT have land mines in their agreements?

CCW Safe is decent in my view, I've been a paid member with added $1mil bail-bond coverage since 2015. I pay $179/year. I'd want the service to have a mobile app or GPS 🛰 system to help expedite a lawyer or legal aid team ASAP. You(the paid member, ccw user) may be hurt or wounded. Physical evidence or data, items may be damaged or tampered with at the scene. By standers, homeless bums, street crazy drug addicts etc. The patrol officers or deputies on scene will not be kind or concerned about your welfare, legal issues.

I've been with ACLDN for about 5 years. Their idea of educating you on doing the right things to avoid implications is great. Having such great people on their team such as Ayoob does offer more peace of mind to me. They have a nationwide set of lawyers you can have nearby to contact or you can refer to your own. You have to get things correct from the very start. Educate yourself and have a good team to back you. No, I don't want to EVER use such a team but I know life is not always what you want, and I most certainly don't want my loved ones or me to suffer bodily harm because others decided they will or might.

The odds are about 1,000 to 1 that you will never have a covered event in your entire life. If they were legit, they should be paying out hundreds of millions per year in self-defense claims, based on the amount of money they collect. I haven't found any evidence that any of them have ever paid anything.

  • @2fast2block

@@cliffordschaffer5289 no, they've taken care of claims. I don't know how you can say, "I haven't found any evidence that any of them have ever paid anything." Having lawyers and their team take care of things for a case is delivering. If anyone had to hire such a team, expect it to be at least a many thousands of dollars. If you feel lucky never needing such a team then yeah, don't pay out anything to anyone for such a case.

@@2fast2block 1) If they actually did, then it would be easy to show it. Show me the evidence. 2) In order for them to be a legitimate company they should be paying out at least 350 million per year for bail and self-defense lawyers. Read the news. That isn't even possible. There aren't that many self-defense cases. Ask them yourself. How much did they pay out last year in claims? If it isn't anything close to 350 million then you are getting hosed. If they won't tell you (and they won't) then they have already told you.

@@2fast2block They have so few claims that I doubt that they even have a claims department, let alone a "team" to back it up. I spent years in the insurance business so I can spot the difference between a good policy and a complete rip-off.

@@2fast2block To be clear, I have only seen claims of ONE - the Maddox case. If you watch the video and pay attention you will see that Maddox never says they actually did or paid anything. He says they are great people but he never actually explains what they did. My guess is that they didn't pay anything but a fee for him to do the commercial. Furthermore, if Maddox is telling the truth then any first year lawyer should have been able to walk him out of jail the first day. It doesn't sound like an expensive case. Just for fun, let's assume they paid the attorney $35,000 for one week of work. But, even if they did pay Maddox something besides the fee to do the commercial, they would need at least $350,000,000 worth of those cases every year to be legit. They should be able to post at least 10,000 of those videos every year if they were anything close to legit.

Sadly, USCCA is a rip off. I’ve been paying their salaries for years, but after research, the chances of them paying for anything in a self defense shooting is close to zero.
