Do You Need BOTH Tools in Your Workshop? Makita Random Orbit Sander VERSUS Makita Finishing Sander

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Sanders are an essential tool in any workshop, but which type should you choose, and do you need more than one? Sam compares the functionality and finish between the @makitauk 18V Finishing Sander and the @makitauk 18V Random Orbit Sander. This video will be helpful to you if your budget only stretches to buying one type of sander.
At the end of the video, Sam mentions it would be good if Makita released a battery powered belt sander. He is referring to a version of the M9400/9911, which is mains powered, not the DBS180 Filing Sander.

    I love it when the talking is low volume and the intro a 120db explosion.

    I have both, find the finishing sander removes more surface whilst keeping it level. But it'd too heavy and I dislike the sheet paper. So I use the orbital 99% of the time, due to its convenient size and quick swap paper feature.

    This video is exactly what I was looking for. I am looking to buy a Makita sander to remove the varnish so I can restore the outdoor furniture and the deck. Would you still go with the orbital please? I am curious to know how well they do in the corners. I am assuming the finishing sander will have the upper hand? Thanks for taking the time to produce the video!

    The Orbit is the best all rounder and will remove more material more quickly than the finishing sander. But be careful not to cut into the wood. Easily done, especially if using an 80 grit. Corners, I would use a multi tool myself, generally useless as sanders, but in tight corners they come into their own. You have more control.

    After watching this from six months ago, you had one fatal flaw in the testing. The orbital sander was running at its lowest speed, the the other one you could clearly hear was running at a faster speed. Redo the test with the orbital at speed 3 and it will tear the pants off the other one

    If you notice, I only pushed the power button once. Both machines start with full power and reduce depending how many times you push the button. The sound produced by both machines is different, they're different types of sander, which I kind of the point. Thanks for watching, spotting things I've missed helps me to improve, when I've missed something 👍😉

    You can buy the Makita tools as bare units (like I did because I already own batteries and charger) or they come as kits.

    @martinharris539 depends which system you go for, there's the 12v, 18v LXT or the 40v XGT Many other brands such as Bosch and DeWalt do similar platforms.

    @@VW_Fan something sounds very wrong there. The sander uses the LXT 18v. If yours do not fit, then I would assume the sander is faulty. Where did you purchase it from? Have you tried different batteries you own?

    Rectangle vibrating sanders are pretty useless

  • @ChampionsOfTheTrade

    @ChampionsOfTheTrade

    It really depends on what result you're after. The Rectangle or Finishing sander, is far less likely to cut into the surface than an orbit, leaving a smoother finish.
